Christian perfection consists of holiness—that is, freedom of the soul from enslavement to sin. It stands to reason that all people without exception, not only priests or monastics, are called to this perfection or holiness that consists of freedom from sin.

Archbishop Averky (Taushev)

It is obvious that our Lord wants us to be as close to Him as possible. To attain this state one must follow the purpose of life formulated by saint Seraphim of Sarov - the acquisition of the Holy Spirit. Many saints were vouchsafed to feel God’s presence in their lives. That’s because they managed to attain holiness with the help of the Lord. The saints encourage us also to lead a holy life. Moreover, in the Holy Gospel we read: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

The question is how exactly one can become holy. To answer it we should realise what is the main obstacle for people to be in the constant communion with God. Apparently, it is sins that move us away from our Lord. It’s high time to understand that we really are slaves of sin. The Son of God has descended from the Heaven so that we may be free from our numerous sins and become perfect. Evidently, Jesus Christ has done that to save not only priests and monks, but mostly to give the last hope to the worst sinners. Therefore, every one of us should struggle to attain holiness in order to be always with God.

To sum it all up, I fully agree with archbishop Averky’s words. We should strive for perfection and do our best to become free from sins and to restore union with God.

We believe that holiness is the lot of special ascetics, monks from remote forests, wise and experienced priests, but not us. We do not seek to acquire it, considering ourselves unworthy even to think about it. But this is a delusion and false piety.

By exactly the same logic, one can never receive communion, considering oneself unworthy of this great Sacrament through false piety. But without striving for holiness, we violate the commandment given by the Lord: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." (Mt. 5:48). Archbishop Averky reminds us of this.

I agree with Archbishop Averky wholeheartedly. Yes, Christian perfection consists of freedom from sin. And we, as Christians, should strive to achieve this perfection. And, of course, this goal is very difficult to reach. I really cannot stress enough how difficult it is, for, as Archbishop Averky rightly says, this perfection is, in fact, holiness. Now, it’s rather tempting to dismiss it as something completely unachievable. You could say to yourself that it’s okay to commit sins because it’s unavoidable. But while I’m almost sure that, indeed, most of us will not reach this perfection, this holiness, we should not be lenient to ourselves and give up without even trying. Even knowing that, most likely, we will not be free from sin in this life, we should try every day to be the best Christians we can be and always strive to become better.

I know that some people have a very strange approach to the clergy. As if it was the "job" of priests and monks – to be holy and to pray for the salvation of the humankind, while all the others may just be thankful and wait for the redemption. Of course, this point of view is too narrow-minded and ridiculous to even put an effort in debunking it. All the people are equal before God, for every person is His creation whom He gives His love in full. And since every one of us has the potential to perceive God's divine grace, it's just logically inconsistent to wait for someone to lead you to salvation. The thing that matters most is the inner spiritual work of a person. And that, by definition, is a very personal or even intimate matter. God’s already given us everything, but whether to use it or not is up solely to each and every individual.

We usually mix up the concepts of sin, freedom and righteousness. Sin is usually understood by us as freedom. And it's bad if it's not. It is bad if a person is not free to sin in his life. Because then he will begin to think that sin is freedom. Therefore, we should have the freedom to sin, and we should give it to others as well. God Himself gives us the freedom to sin. We need to understand that a person has the right to commit a sin. God does not punish us. We punish ourselves, we create problems for ourselves. God gives you the freedom to do whatever you want, because that's the only way you can understand the truth about salvation. "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life." (Romans 6:22)

I agree with Archbishop Averky. I think that he shows us one of the the problems we have inside the Christian community. Those people who are not priests or monks think that they can be lenient to themselves.
"We are not going to become saints", - I have heard that once. But we must always strive for Christian perfection. Not every soul is capable of a really great feat. But God knows everything. He gives the cross to everyone according to their strength. As Christians, we are to do everything that we are commanded to do, and sometimes even more.

I fully agree with Archbishop Averky that Christian perfection consists in freedom from sin. And we, as Christians, should strive to achieve this perfection. But it is very difficult to achieve this, because we are born in sin. Of course, infants and young children are not sinless, but unlike older children and adults, they are innocent in the context of human relationships due to lack of experience. Any person growing up begins to do evil in one way or another motivated by selfishness, greed, fear, resentment. A believer does not become sinless by nature, but God transforms him day by day, encouraging a person to think and act in accordance with God's requirements, but a person receives salvation through faith. But even despite the fact that, most likely, we will not be free from sin in this life, we must try to be the best Christians every day.

I really like this expression, because Archbishop Averky perfectly shows the fact that there isn't any difference between the laity and the clergy. We all are equal before God. We all search for freedom from sin. We pray for others and repent of our sins, we follow the Law of God and have a chance of salvation. Christianity is purely about the unity with God of any given soul and has nothing to do with hierarchies which people like to create so much.

I totally agree with Archbishop Averky`s saying. The thing which he described seems very much like deification that is the main meaning and purpose of an Orthodox Christian`s life.  The only one who is free of sin is God so while we are getting closer to this perfection Archbishop Averky mentioned we are getting closer and closer to the Lord. As we were made in God`s image but later moved away from him, our goal is to return to his grace again. That`s what we are doing during our life by praying, fasting, participating in communion etc. All these actions are called to shorten the distance between us and the Lord, to make us as free from sin as it is possible and finally, to undergo deification.

Yes, this is the meaning of every Christian's life, that is, the struggle against sin. The point is, that priests and monks are people like everyone else, they have only dedicated their lives to God. However, every Christian has his own cross and has to find salvation in his own conditions, no matter what path he chooses. Monks and priests have chosen to serve God, and then how can other people be saved? They can be saved if they live according to conscience and do their job well. If we serve our neighbor well, we will serve God.

I fully agree with this quote. I think that this is one of the most important Christian ideas that we must understand and strive to fulfill. I also like that Archbishop Averky (Taushev) talks about both priests and monks and equates them with lay people. Indeed, here we are equal and everyone should use their freedom correctly, as we must all get closer to the likeness of God in this earthly life.

I couldn't agree more with Archbishop Averkiy. People often assume that holiness is only for those who are priests or lead the monastic way of life. However, it's definitely not so. It's vital to understand the importance of craving holiness for everyone.
God has given us the greatest treasure: the opportunity of eternal life. Beside this treasure all earthly sufferings and problems seem little and unimportant. However, to crave for the eternal life people ought to become saints which is only possible with God.

I would totally agree with this phrase. That's is why Jesus Christ came down from heaven and was incarnate from the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us, suffered and was buried, descended into the Hades to take everybody from it. He gave us Sacraments: His most Precious and Life-giving Body and Blood to grant us our lost paradise. We were given everything for saving our souls without deserving it, just for God's love. That's why we should endeavour. "God became a man so that man may become god".

We often say, "we are not saints," implying that we are imperfect and many things are difficult for us. However, when we came to the lecture for the first time, did we say to ourselves "we are not philologists", seeing how many books we had to read? We did not doubt that we, too, would become teachers and professors. So why should we give up on the idea of becoming saints when this is the final point of a Christian's life?

Of course, all people grow up in different conditions. It is more difficult for some to gain salvation. However, there is potential in each of us. we can and should become saints one day. Isn't it exciting and challenging? I absolutely agree with the opinion of Archbishop Averky. Nothing should dismay us on the way to salvation and holiness.
