The saints have also found that selfish thoughts, left unchecked, lead a person to sinful acts, passions, habits, and eventually alienation from God and neighbor; whereas godly thoughts, when cultivated, guide a person by the grace of God to virtuous actions, habits, and ultimately purification from the passions, illumination by the Holy Spirit, and deification in Christ.

We should be very careful with our thoughts, thoroughly controlling them. We should distinguish what thoughts are good and what are evil. If we have accepted any bad thoughts we should repent immediately of it and cleanse our heart.

The saints are undoubtedly right. However, I often find it difficult to control my thoughts. But if I think of something bad, I try to switch immediately to something good, because otherwise I can easily sink into bad thoughts and lose faith, hope and love, which are three of the most significant things in the life of every Christian.

Holy elder Paisius of the Mount Athos is well-known for his teaching about "good thoughts". He says that in every situation of our life we are free to choose, whether we interprete this or that thing positively or negatively. For example, intentions of other people, their aims, events of our life, where we should see God's concern about us and praise Him for everything: not only happy moments, but also for sorrows and tribulations.

I like the dichotomy given by Bishop Alexis Trader - that of selfishness as the opposite to godly thoughts. Christianity teaches to cast yourself aside, to be absolutely humble as only by humility true Love may be attained. There is no place for egoism in any form here. The greatest commandments given by God are to “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” and “love thy neighbour as thyself”. Selfishness brings alienation from God and neighbour, which, as Bishop Alexis mentions, is closely connected with sinful acts.

I think this is a very logical thought. Habit and consistency can be both a bad quality and a very good one that helps a person. After all, when our brain can form the habit of pious, humble and beneficent action, then it will be a little easier for a person to do good deeds and less to do thoughtless and selfish things.Selfishness should be treated very carefully. Healthy selfishness can sometimes help us, but it is very difficult to achieve this. We are all very selfish - it's in our nature, so it's worth fighting and testing ourselves.

I agree with the idea expressed in the quote by Bishop Alexis (Trader). I think it is obvious to everyone that bad thoughts and impulses lead to sinfulness, and good ones lead to salvation. It seems to me that the main idea of this statement is that we must always remember this principle. People are rarely suspicious of their own thoughts and intentions, rarely try to recognize evil seeds in their thoughts. If you forget that your ideas may be wrong and sinful, then it is very easy to become like the Pharisees, who, despite outward diligence, did everything out of pride and arrogance. Awareness and thoughtfulness are very useful and should not be forgotten. I myself sometimes forget that my intentions may not be entirely correct, but I always try to think about all my ambiguous thoughts before confession.

It all starts from the inside out. Our actions are a reflection of our thoughts. If we keep our thoughts pure, our actions will be good, if we think selfishly, we will act the same way. Bottom line: watch what you think, then you won't have to watch what you do. ( actually, of course, you have to watch both. )

Bishop Alexis in this quote suggests that selfish thoughts lead to spiritual death whereas godly thoughts - to Salvation. This idea is undoubtedly right.

Saint Theophan the Recluse in his letters also writes that it is crucially important to live in the presence of God, that is, remembering that the Lord is near. This is exactly what Christians must persevere in. And Apostle Paul instructed: “Pray without ceasing” (Thes. 5:17). Try not to forget about God no matter what you’re doing. This is a narrow path that leads to Salvation.

On the contrary, when our heart is filled with our own ego, there’s no place for God and for love to our neighbour. Selfish thoughts cause only self-compassion, despondency and judging others while pondering on God’s presence can fill our soul with piece and repentance.

I agree with the author of the quote. Every sin starts with a thought. After the thought, it develops into a wish, then comes determination, and finally the action itself. That's why we should suppress sinful thoughts at their inception. This idea was borrowed from Christ's words about the mere difference between "imaginary" adultery that takes place in your head and the actual act: "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). That's why the holy apostle Paul, in his Epistle to the Philippians, says: “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things (Philippians 4:8).”

I agree. A thought is the beginning of a fall, but not only a thought, even just a feeling, the slightest movement of the soul can plunge a righteous person and push him onto the path of sin.

However, God is merciful and able to raise us up from the depths of any fall. The Apostle Peter - the supreme prime apostle - even he began to drown when he was scared walking through the waves of a stormy lake to the Savior. St. Mary of Egypt found salvation despite her terrible past.

Therefore, we must not only renew ourselves ("be transformed by the renewing of your mind."Romans 12:2), but also not lose heart.

I completely agree with this quotation. We are reflections of our thoughts, and if we don't keep our "attics" clean, they become dull and dirty. This is a sinful state that we can overcome by forcing ourselves to feel loss and humility. When we try to remove all the "dusty bags" from our soul, we can do good deeds. Keeping our soul clean should be the only goal in our lives to achieve Salvation.

I agree with the quote. My mom always tells me that if you feel bad, go and help others who also feel bad. And that always helps. Selfishness can ruin everything, including families and friendships. A human is not alone, there are many other humans whom we have to love and look after. Kindness generates kindness. So let's help each other and fight our selfishness.

It is essential to remember that our thoughts shape our desires and our desires shape our actions. If we cultivate thoughts that are connected to God, we will be more likely to do acts of love and kindness. Many places in the scriptures say that our thoughts determine who we are and what we do. So it is very important to start with your thoughts: we should always control them, otherwise they can easily lead us into sinful paths. You should always surround yourself with people who will help you grow spiritually, because your thoughts are connected to the people you talk to, and as I've already mentioned, every Christian should start their path to salvation by cleansing their thoughts.

It's hard to argue with this statement. Indeed, we must beware of many of our thoughts. I also have to ask the question: where lies the boundary between selfishness and self-care. Sometimes excessive humiliation can cause harm to others, so I believe you should not forget about yourself and your feelings, but you should also try to be kind to others and be ready to “turn the other cheek”.

Good thoughts really encourage us to do good deeds. For example, I have noticed more than once that when people are in a good mood, they are not only cheerful, but also ready to help others. The same thing with thoughts - when you are focused on something sublime and remember God, you can find His presence in everything.
