| 1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
7 And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

| Noah, as Adam, was immediately given a blessing. That's a symbolical action which makes him a new Adam, the forefather of the new world. Th blessing is given not only to the righteous Noah, but also to his "sons", both his present and future offspring, the entire human race, now renewed and called to a new life.

| In the first part of chapter 9 God addresses not Noah alone, as before, but Noah and his sons. And as Metropolitan Philaret notes, it is because these revelations concern not only Noah and his family, but Noah and his descendants, that is, the human race. God says that every beast and fowl of the earth will fear Noah and his descendants. It is interesting that the blessing God gave to Adam differs from this one. Adam was the lord of the creature, but they did not fear him. Metropolitan Philaret says it is because when the inner dignity of man no longer subdues creatures to him, God restrains them with fear. This fear frees us from dangers from animals stronger than us and forces them to serve us. Then God gives permission to eat animals, but He forbids the consumption of blood. Metropolitan Philaret argues that one of the reasons for this prohibition is the fact that the habit of consuming blood weakens a person’s natural aversion to murder. And finally, God forbids murder because man was made in the image of God.

| Many things from these verses and from chapter 8 remind me of the scenes of creation of the world and men. God's blessing to Noah and his sons echoes the original blessing given to Adam and Eve. It is a reaffirmation of the divine commission to be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. This blessing underscores the continuity of God's plan for humanity despite the previous judgment. The statement that the fear and dread of humans will be upon every beast and creature means the dominion originally granted by God to Adam. In Orthodox interpretation, this dominion is viewed as a responsible stewardship over creation rather than oppressive rule. It emphasizes the harmony between humanity and the created order. And God's declaration that every moving thing is now permitted as food marks a change from the previous restriction in the pre-flood era and at the same time the permission given to Adam and Eve to eat everything in the Garden of Eden (except of the forbidden fruit).
