Instead of freedom from sin, people began to strive for freedom to sin. True freedom, freedom of spirit, Christian freedom came to be considered "despotism," "coercion," the oppression of the Church, while the dissipation of one's sinful will, which leads to enslavement of the spirit, was made life's ideal.

I agree with this quote. This understandingof freedom is the result of a cultural and social shift towards individualism and hedonism. The emphasis on self-realization and instant gratification has led many to view any kind of restrictions or moral discipline as oppressive. The concept of sin and the need for repentance and redemption is considered archaic and inappropriate in modern society.

However, true freedom is not just the absence of restrictions or moral responsibility. True freedom is the ability to choose the good, to choose what is right and just, and to live in accordance with this choice. This requires discipline, self-control and a willingness to submit to the highest authority and moral standards.

I can't agree with the quote completely. Because if we are talking about real Christians who are sincere believers in God, for them the salvation of the Soul, realised by repentance, is paramount. I personally do not consider the freedom of the spirit to be coercion and oppression of the Church. Everything is measured by one's interest in attaining the Kingdom of Heaven.

God had loved us so much that He gave us freedom: although He created us He does not force us to gratitude towards Him our Creator, He doesn’t force us to be with Him. Freedom is a gift of God, every person can be spiritually free (physically - not always). Every person is responsible for his freedom.

People choose whether they want to live with God, following his commandments or they want to live just as they want. Only God can free us from sinful bonds by which we enslaved ourselves by our own will, and Christians try to subordinate their will to the will of God, so God Himself could act through those people, so that people could become shining lamps in the world.

When we live according to the Commandments, our soul is free - it flies like a bird, and the body is not a prison anymore, it is a tool which helps an inspired soul to show and express its love.

I love the words of Archbishop Averky and definitely agree with them. His idea casts light on what freedom is. That what people believe to be the sign of true freedom is actually the opposite. The pursuit of sinful desires leads to spiritual enslavement.

A similar idea one can find in Milton’s Paradise Lost. There is no freedom in Hell, “despotism” and “coercion” are trades of it. The true freedom can only be found in God. It is obedience to God; willfulness, on contrary, is the loss of it.

I fully agree with Archbishop Averky. It is very worrisome but unfortunately true that nowadays instead of freedom from sin, people strive for freedom to sin. People in the West generally turned away from Christianity and its teaching, and proclaimed it a relic of the past that is nothing but a handicap for a modern person. Instead, people preach doing whatever they want within the law. And what is more, people started to pressure everyone else to follow suit. In my opinion, modern attitude to dating is a good example of that. Not only did promiscuity become normal and acceptable, but it also became almost a requirement to fit in. Nowadays, many consider saving oneself for marriage almost weird. But I suppose, all these changes are expected when people turn away from religion, which is sad and somewhat disturbing because we still have to live in this world and find our place in it.

I find this saying by Archbishop Averky Taushev quite important for modern state of affairs. This quote highlights a distortion of the concept of freedom in society. It suggests that instead of seeking freedom from sin and living in accordance with God's commandments, people have begun to desire the freedom to engage in sinful behavior. This shift in understanding has led to a misunderstanding of true freedom and the Church’s position towards it.

Orthodox Christianity teaches us that true freedom lies in living according to God's will and commandments. It is the freedom of the spirit, which liberates us from the bondage of sin and
leads us to a deeper communion with God.
On the contrary, society has inverted this understanding, viewing adherence to moral standards as oppressive and restrictive. And the quote highlights the danger of pursuing sinful desires, which ultimately enslave and diminish the spirit. It points out that the ideal of life should not be the pursuit of one's sinful will but rather the renunciation of it in favor of aligning oneself with God's will.

The quote by Archbishop Averky (Taushev) resonates with the idea that as societies evolve, the concept of freedom can take on different meanings and, in some cases, become distorted. Throughout history, this transformation in the perception of freedom can be observed in both the Bible and classic literature. In the Bible, the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden exemplifies this shift. Initially, they enjoyed the freedom of innocence, living in harmony with God's will. However, their disobedience led to the pursuit of freedom to sin, resulting in their expulsion from paradise and a loss of their spiritual freedom.

Classic literature also explores this theme. In John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost," the character of Satan embodies the pursuit of freedom to sin. After his rebellion against God, Satan and his followers find themselves in Hell, where they have the freedom to defy God but are ultimately enslaved by their sinful desires. This illustrates how the quest for freedom from restraint, when taken to extremes, can lead to spiritual bondage and suffering.

In conclusion, the quote by Archbishop Averky highlights a profound truth about the evolution of freedom. While freedom from sin and adherence to God's will are seen as oppressive by some, history and literature remind us that the pursuit of freedom to sin can result in a different kind of enslavement. True freedom, as depicted in the Bible and classic literature, is not the license to indulge in sin but rather the liberation of the spirit through obedience to a higher purpose or moral code.
