It is important for us to understand that all temptations in general are sent or allowed by God for our benefit.

This statement seems interesting. You can speculate and discuss this with your loved ones.

On the one hand, you can agree with the quote. The Lord sends us temptations for various reasons. For example, to harden us. God gives us temptations and gives us a choice (so that we make the right one, of course).

On the other hand, does the Lord send temptations? "All temptations are from the evil one," isn't that right? But also, the Lord allows it to happen.

Anyway, let's not forget that nothing happens in our life just like that.

First of all, it should be said that temptations are not sent by God, but by the devil. God only allows them. And he does this in order to give a person the opportunity to make the right choice. As we know, man is created free. A person decides for himself, which side to be on: on the light or dark side.

Personally, I agree with Fr. Jack Sparks. It seems that everything which occurs in our life, even a temptation, has sense. Someone can say that temptations are dragging you down more frequently than lifting you up. It's difficult to dispute this, I would only say that we can't weigh anyone's life without the context of death, what is more, the heart of another is hidden in darkness. I am convinced that going through temptations indeed helps a person to grow spiritually.

To tell the truth, I fancy this idea as it somehow contradicts with the one which claims that the evil in our life is God's penalty for our sins. Each time I encounter such point of view I remember the words of Isaac the Syrian "Don't call God fair". Why can't we call our God fair? Because He is Loving.

1.According to the elder Joseph Hesychast, there is no knowledge of pure souls, no manifestation of righteousness, no discernment of patience without temptation. Temptation is a cleansing fire which makes the soul pure and bright.

The elder recommends to build a courageous frame of mind in the face of temptations that come. They will come one way or another. They are necessary for us. For otherwise we will not be cleansed. As by the grace of God the previous ones have passed, so these will pass, as soon as they have done their work.

Temptation is a remedy and healing herbs which heal our evident passions and our invisible wounds.

So, we should have patience to to accumulate reward, rest and joy in the heavenly kingdom.

Then we put down roots deep, like trees, which the more the wind blows, the deeper they take root. In the greatest temptations we can find the greatest consolation.

2. The more one receives grace, the more one is tempted.

Always grace precedes temptation as a kind of notice to prepare for it.

3. When does man understand human pain? When he himself falls ill. When he goes through the same. Then he knows and understands the pain of another.

We often feel sorrowful and scared when after a period of peace and quiet something wrong happens in our life. We find it 'wrong' if we are pessimistic. If we are optimistic enough, we can say that it's a black line in our life, and after that white one will spread again.

However, christians should interpret any difficulty in another way. They should understand it as a temptation sent or allowed by God for our benefit and strengthening.

Holy Fathers say: "Man untempted is not ingenious" and "any good works are preceded or followed by temptation" ("муж не искушен — не искусен" и "всякому делу благому или предыдет, или последует искушение").

So we should accept any temptation as a blessing from God Himself, bestowed upon us so that we could rise in virtue and spiritual strength. We are not to be scared by the temptations, not to feel faint-hearted. As christians taught by Jesus Christ by His live example, we should be patient, pray and trust God and His providence in our life, bearing any difficulty with dignity.

--
1. In many books some important words and ideas are often italicized to be better seen by the reader. 2. Christ teaches that if we want to be the first we should make ourselves the last and serve and minister our close ones. 3. We are also taught that we should not rush into temptations, but should patiently endure them when they come at us. And when they come, we should ask God for help and mercy, and bear the sorrow without murmur, as that was sent or allowed by God for our benefit.

This is one of the interesting thoughts in Christianity, because for many it may seem strange why God who loves us all sends us temptations that are also for our good.

This can be explained by the fact that God who wants everyone to be saved allows many trials, because in these sufferings a person's soul is cleansed from sin and prepared for eternal life.

Since a person is sinful by nature, he can struggle with sin in temptations, learn to overcome it in himself in order to be even closer to God.

In this Christian teaching about the meaning of suffering, we see that a person accepts temptations as a partner in Christ's suffering and for liberation from sin.

The concept that everything is sent by God is clear and sensible. However, it is obvious that we as weak people can’t accept it without any doubts. That’s just because we don’t want to suffer but wish to enjoy ourselves in this temporal world, here and now. It may seem to us that we know for sure how it will be better. Of course, Christians should realise that it is the Lord Who knows everything. We may only predict what would be if something happened, but God is omniscient and does everything to save our souls.

Temptation in general is a task from the Lord which is sent to test us and to reward us if we are worthy of it. We pray and entreat our Creator to grand us humbleness and all-embracing love because it is a truly blessed state. And God answers, He immediately sends us something that may teach us to be humble, pious and sincerely faithful. This can be called a “temptation”. For example, our relative falls ill or we are rejected by our close friend. But in most cases we deny the Lord’s help as we don’t want to suffer and behave in a humble way. We forget about our prayers at once. We get depressed and think that we are the most unfortunate people in the world, that God turned His back on us.

At these moments, we must remember the following words: “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Mth. 10:29-30). The Lord is always with us, He is Unchanged and loves us in spite of all troubles, especially when we are being tempted. I suppose this is Fr. Jack’s idea.

I agree with this quote. It is also written in the Gospel: "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations" (James 1:2). But in fact, it is difficult for me to understand why temptations are sent, but the fact that they are allowed by God is quite clear. Even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, though he might not have been. And He was tempted not only for His own benefit, but for the benefit of all people.

Thus, we must be like Christ in temptations, knowing that sooner or later they will end. And as soon as they end, we will become stronger spiritually.

I find this statement to be totally true.

Indeed, temptations are beneficial for our spiritual growth. We are tested by God to prove that we are worthy to inherit the eternal life with Him. Temptations also help us to achieve humility which is essential for us. When we are too confident and proud of ourselves, we need to be pacified. Even when feel injustice to ourselves, we must remember that God knows best what we need for our souls. We have to trust Him, accept everything He sends us and try to mend our ways.

I agree with this quotation. It is absolutely true that everything that happens is allowed by God. For He is the Ruler of visible and invisible worlds.

Furthermore, our Loving Father allows us to be tested and tempted so that we might know ourselves better: those sins and passions which are within us. He permits it not only that we don't have unreasonable expectations on the Doom's Day but also we are granted the chance to excel ourselves before it.

I couldn’t agree more with the statement of Fr. Jack Sparks. Spiritual life involves many difficulties, but this does not mean that they cannot be overcome. Temptation is understood as an incentive to evil, temptation, seduction, and, finally, as sin itself. If you ask what the role of temptation in our lives is, most will answer that it must be avoided in every possible way.

Every Christian who lives his life humbly and prays incessantly is able to resist all temptations. Moreover, it is impossible to imagine salvation without temptations, because through this constant spiritual struggle a person can really find eternal life.

The Holy Apostle Paul says: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it”. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

It’s a relevant saying. Today during the war with in Ukraine millions of people are suffering. In the territories of Donbass and the whole Ukraine there’s no electricity or central heating system, people have to buy technical water. Cities are seriously damaged or completely destroyed like Mariupol. One should think that in such a situation people ought to feel outraged and blame all of their misfortunes on God. However, it’s not quite like that.

A friend told me that there is a doctor in the hospital in Mariupol and she told her in a private talk: “You know, Sasha, we deserved this. But people still don’t understand”.

The thing is all these misfortunes are sent to us to reconcile with God. Some people are saved through sufferings and other people are saved while they help those who suffer. But if people don’t understand this and don’t change, then there are more sufferings yet to come.

All in all, all sorts of temptation are to bring us nearer to God if we can change what we are doing wrong.

Some non-believers ask: if your God is so kind and just, then why are there sorrows and diseases and wars? many people are confused, but I know for sure: all this was sent to us for a reason. If we believe in God in the most difficult times, prove our loyalty and love, we will be rewarded.

We are nobody to question God's Will. We must accept everything he sends us, just as a patient must humbly endure the pain of an operation with an Omniscient Doctor. And that's what I think Fr. Jack Sparks is talking about.

From my point of view, this quote is not only true, but also very useful for any Christian. Each of us has his own life, his own joys and trials, and at some moments it is very easy to give up and start murmuring against God. However, a deeper study of the ideas of Christianity can help to avoid this.
Many atheists appeal to this fact in discussions with our fellow believers. They say that if God existed and if he is love, then there would be no war, no famine, or other bad things that bring so much pain and destruction. But behind all this - pain, sorrow, trial - lies God's blessing, rebirth, improvement of a person or his family. Almost all people associate the turning points of their lives with some kind of trial. Pain softens the heart, making it receptive to the word of God, even if previously it, being callous, did not accept this word. In every test lies the Divine will and benefit, which, of course, a person cannot immediately notice. However, over time it will show up. That is what the words of Fr. Jack Sparks teach us.
