Through our anxiety about worldly things we hinder the soul from enjoying divine blessings and we bestow on the flesh greater care and comfort than are good for it. We nourish it with what is harmful and thus make it an adversary, so that it not only wavers in battle but, because of over-indulgence, it fights vigorously against the soul, seeking honours and rewards.

The idea of this quote is really valuable. Each of us can reflect on how many hours a day we spend on our spiritual life. Supposing a person says the morning, the evening prayers and the Gospel every day. That’s 1 hour all in all. The rest of the day we spend on our earthly affairs.

Our world is always in a hurry, people are nervous, unable to deal with stress. Therefore, it’s not surprising that when we are constantly anxious, we can’t concentrate on the inner prayer. Satan intentionally wants us to become bustling. People compete in this endless race to meet deadlines, to earn money, to have a successful life. They believe that if they manage to do everything for their earthly life, they will achieve their goals and will become happy. Nevertheless, it is spiritual life that they lack.

Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us against following this example: “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” (Matthew 6:31). The Saviour compared a human being with a lily and advised to pay more attention to our spiritual state: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

Instead of it the majority of people ask in their prayers to be healthy and happy. Of course, this desire is quite natural but it can be wrong. For example, according to Christ’s commandments we want to become humble, to love our brothers. And the Lord helps us by sending these illnesses but we can’t realise that. We take care of our body instead of healing our soul.

I fully agree with venerable Nilus and hope to keep in mind his words.

I would totally agree with Venerable Nilus the Faster of Sinai. Our body is a dungeon for our soul. It's practically impossible to look after the body and the soul at the same extent. We hinder our soul from everything divine without acknowledging it. Certainly the urge towards comfort, welfare and well-being is quite natural. It is an inherited asset. But we should think thoroughly how we look after our soul and express our concern to the body rationally.

To sum up, there might be no excessive concern over our soul as it is much harder to take care about it in a spiritual way. Moreover, the path towards Salvation is narrow: "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it" (Matthew 7:13-14). But God helps those who are struggling with much endeavour.

I fully agree with this quote. This reminds me of an article by Father A. Schmemann about our "choice". He also says that the body does not need anything special. For example, we can remove thirst just by drinking water, but instead we have invented hundreds of different fuzzy drinks that are really bad for our health. The same goes for food, clothes, and so on. Thus, we take great care of our body, paying less and less attention to our soul.

I couldn't agree more with the quote.

It's obvious that people don't need much to live. Some water, a piece of bread and something to wear is perfectly enough! However, nowadays the world offers us a great choice of cafes, drinks, food and fashionable boutiques. Such excess of literally everything has a negative impact on our souls since we care too much about what we are going to eat or wear. Jesus Christ said that we should be like the birds, who "neither sow, noe do they reap". And Lord cares for them!

It's truly like this. The less one cares about earthly things and does what is right, the more God helps them and cares for them. It happens vice versa as well. All in all, we should read the Gospel more and focus on what is truly important, what isn't a substitute of the real treasure.

After committing original sin, people learned what suffering is, and also became weak and shaky. Unfortunately, there are many temptations in the world and often we do not pay attention to how our actions can affect our soul. Christians break the fast never knowing why it is needed. Thus, for the sake of our fanciful desires, we reject the bliss of the soul, the moment of cognition of the Divine. But we must always remember the deeds of the saints who suffered for the faith, for the Lord, for the truth, and try to get closer to the truth.

I find great comfort in the fact that my faith does not consider body and soul enemies. If the body were filthy and despicable, then Christ would not be incarnate and sanctify it.

On the other hand, it must be remembered that the body is a temporary refuge of the soul, which is eternal. Should we satisfy the excess needs of the body? Of course, we must take care that our body is healthy and strong in order to have the strength for good deeds. But sometimes our body demands more than it needs. Over-indulgence leads to weakness of the body and loss of strength.

We overload not only the body, but also the mind. Overloaded with thoughts about earthly things, the mind becomes like the body, overfed with junk food - becomes clumsy and weak. This analogy is very convincing, so I agree with the judgment of Venerable Nilus the Faster of Sinai. We need to be more attentive to everything that leads us astray from Heaven.

I absolutely agree with the statement of Venerable Nilus. Indeed, the world can be amazing, and many of its things seem necessary and right, but how, based on this, can our choice affect the purity of the soul? Sometimes deplorably, because not everything that seems pleasant has a positive effect on our heart. It can be hard to abstain from temptations, but through fasting we keep the faith, go the right way, follow the commandments. Through the path of rejection of the bad, we elevate our soul and draw closer to God.

Our body is a dungeon for our soul.

It is a pagan (gnostic or platonic) view of the body.
