| Do not fear the conflict, do not flee it. Where there is no struggle, there is no virtue; where faith and love are not tempted, it is not possible to be sure whether they are really present. They are proved and revealed in adversity, that is, in difficult and grievous circumstances, both outward and inward – during sickness, sorrow, and privations.

| On the whole I agree with Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt. It is easy to stay a faithful Christian when there is no persecution, when you can openly profess your faith and keep your job, your social status, your life. And it is easy to love other people when they don’t hurt you, when they aren’t a burden to you. Faith and love can be only proven in adversity. When you don’t renounce Christ even in the face of imminent death. When you continue loving other people even if they are a burden to you. We shouldn’t fear and flee the conflict because it is an opportunity for us to test ourselves and to prove that our faith and love are indeed true.
But I don’t think that without struggle there is no virtue. Just because a Christian lives in a time when one can be a Christian without repercussions, it doesn’t mean that their faith is untrue. And, for example, just because other people aren’t a burden to you, it doesn’t mean that your love for those people is untrue.
