It goes without saying that good works are essential for success in the spiritual life, for they demonstrate the presence of good will in us, without which there is no moving forward; in turn, good works themselves strengthen, develop, and deepen this good will.

I totally share Archbishop Averky’s opinion. Of course, we can say that we believe in God, love our neighbours and that we are good people on in general, but to proof prove that we have to act accordingly. ‘Faith without works is dead’ (James 2:26). Indeed, without good deeds there is no development in our spiritual life. Our faith cannot be true if it doesn’t demonstrate the presence of good will in us. True faith is revealed in a changed life and spiritually alive heart. The more good works we do, the stronger we become as Christians.

Essentially, when we do good works we forget about ourselves for a while and concentrate on another person`s fate or on something other than our own well-being. This helps us develop our humility which contributes to our spiritual development and paradoxically to our well-being because we`re changed psychologically and physically as well.

However, I believe that it's also important to stay vigilant about what kind of good works a person does. If they help someone they should be aware of the fact that sometimes it's unnecessary to help someone by just fulfilling their request. For example, if a person asks for food maybe a person should give it to them once or twice but it`d be better if they encourage them or teach them how to earn their living. Sometimes people don`t even ask for help and for some people its important to avoid suggesting unwanted help. It might be dangerous for both sides because "the helper" might end up making the situation worse, while the complaining person might either become dependent on others or they might start manipulate others.

And of course, we should be careful with purposes of our good works, not to became those who do good works to gain glory or gratitude. As Christ said: "Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven". (Matthew 6:3)

So, good works are undoubtedly essential but people should be careful about them just as about everything in our life.

After reading this quote, I immediately remembered the expression "faith without works is dead." As Archbishop Averky (Taushev) said, good deeds show the existence of good will in us. However, I liked the second part of the statement the most. It seems to me that when a person does good deeds, the Lord sees that a person is trying to do good, and through his efforts the Lord grants certainty and strengthening of good will.

It’s hard to disagree with this quote. Not only is the importance of good works stressed by the Scripture, as well as by all the Church Fathers, it is also absolute common sense. One is what one does. How can one then be a Christian without putting the Lord's teaching into practice through good works? But of course, the reason behind an action is just as important as the action itself. We must not let our good works be tainted by our pride. The true power of good works is that they let us truly exercise our unconditional love for each other. And love is the path to salvation. If good works are done without love they are hollow.

I totally agree with Archbishop Averky as what is the sense of Christianity itself. It's also a notion and nothing more. Of course, God grants faith. He might take it away if a man doesn't love the others. Not only is it about feelings but also proofs of them.
