12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.

13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.

15 For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.

22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.

24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.

This passage shows us that, no matter what happens in our lives, we must rely on the will of God. Abraham did not complain when every time he dug a well, some force took it away. God blessed him and he continued to achieve his aim.

This passage underlines the importance of powerful and close bonds between Abraham and God. God helps Isaac because he is the son of Abraham and because he was humble when Abimelech expelled him from the country. And the reason why was not in Isaac, but in others who were jealous. So God gives Isaac protection and doesn't leave him in trouble alone, promising blessing and multiplying his seed.

Isaac's wealth and power aroused the jealousy of the Philistines, which was first revealed indirectly, though very sensitively to him, by the damming up of his wells, without which he and his flocks could no longer migrate to the neighbourhood of Gerar (the damming up of wells is a very great offence in the East, expressing and causing great enmity, and was common in time of war). Abimelech then explicitly demands Isaac's removal from Gerar. Unjust and unmerciful, though natural politically, this demand was a punishment for Isaac's lies about Rebekah.

The selected passage describes many important events in sequence. It begins with God blessing Isaac, who became so great that the Philistines envied him and filled up the wells that Abraham had dug. Abimelech told Isaac: “Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we”. Isaac dug old and new wells, and the Herar shepherds argued with him. He moved from here  to a “fruitful land" and then Isaac received a night vision from God in Beersheba. There, Isaac set up an altar.

The Scripture tells us that Isaac was moving away from people who envied him and argued with him, even though, as a "very great" man, he could have had conflicts with them. In this, we can see a lesson in the meekness and calmness that all Christians should strive for. The story of digging wells seems to remind us of the importance of work and the search for truth.  Furthermore, the fact that Isaac made a sacrifice immediately after God appeared to him in Beersheba serves as a reminder of gratitude.
