| 1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
-- Suggested questions
What do you think it means that “God remembered Noah”? Can God “forget” anyone? Why do we ask God to “remember” our departed loved ones and ourselves in His Kingdom?
How many days did the Flood last (the water was increasing)? What month was it when it stopped? How many days did Noah and those with him stay in the Ark? What do you think happened to the raven? Why did it not return to the Ark? Do you think it survived? Why is this episode mentioned at all? Why did the experiment with the dove work, unlike that with the raven? From the point of view of the dove, why did it bring the branch of olive to the Ark? What is the symbolism of the dove and the branch of olive? Why did Noah wait for seven days each time before letting another bird out? Why do you think it is mentioned that the dove returned in the evening?

| Giving commentary to the first line of 8th Genesis, saint John Chrysostom tells us we should be quite careful with the word "remember". The fact that God "remebred" Noah doesn't mean He has forgotten him. God was merciful to the righteous man and helped him. What is more, remembering in the context of the Old Testament means fulfilling the promise.

| If chapter 7 was about how the waters rose until everything living died, in chapter 8 we see the end of the Flood. As Metropolitan Philaret notes, the image of the Flood, increasing and destroying, is contrasted with the description of the Flood ceasing, so that the first image reveals God’s justice, and the second one reveals God’s mercy. Once again, we see that the end of the Flood is described in much detail. We learn that the waters abated after 150 days and we learn the exact date when the ark stopped upon the mountain of Ararat. We find out when the tops of the mountains were first seen after the Flood and we see the gradual process of Noah testing whether it was safe to leave the ark. First, he sends forth a raven, and then a dove. Metropolitan Philaret writes that Noah switches a raven with a dove because the latter likes dry places, is faithful to its home and particularly friendly with people. Three times Noah sends forth the dove. On the first try, the dove finds nowhere to land, on the second it brings back to Noah an olive branch, which means that the waters are almost gone, and on the third it does not return, which means that the waters of the Flood were gone.

| I the context of these verses the phrase "God remembered Noah" looks very interesting to me. It may seem, that God forgot about Noah and his family, but of course He didn`t. I think, that these words refer more to the fact, that after the testing period had passed, the Lord came back from watching for Noah to active participation in his fate and the condition of the world.

I think this verse reports that God does not forget about His creation. He cares not only about Noah and his family, but about animals and birds too. God has His own plan for every creation.

| “And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth”.
I’d like to reflect upon the image of the dove.
All people who lived in the Soviet Union could easily recognize the dove with an olive leaf as it was widely used as a symbol of peace. This symbol is surely a direct reference to the Old Testament.
Moreover, dove is a famous symbol of the Holy Spirit. Some commentators, therefore, suppose that the olive leaf stands for the Sacrament of Chrismation.
Others say that the dove brought good news with the olive leaf which also symbolises the Gospel, the saving Word of God.

| What do you think happened to the raven? Why did it not return to the Ark? Do you think it survived? Why is this episode mentioned at all?
I think the raven was fine. It didn’t return to the Ark because it found food (dead bodies of people and animals) for itself. And the dove needed to come back, until plants grew on the dehumidified ground.
The episode with the raven is mentioned because it has a symbolic meaning. St. Augustin compared this bird with a man, who postponed repentance until tomorrow: “When will you improve, when will you change? Tomorrow, you answer. And every time you say: tomorrow, tomorrow. (In Latin: “cras, cras”.) You've turned into a raven. And I'm telling you: when you croak like a crow, death awaits you. After all, that raven, the voice of which you imitate, flew out of the ark - and did not return. And you, brother, go back to the Church, which that ark meant.”

| From the point of view of the dove, why did it bring the branch of olive to the Ark?
On the one hand, the olive branch has long been a symbol of mercy and refuge. From a symbolic point of view, the dove brought it to show that the earth is once again ready to be a home for people and animals on the ark. We know of cases when God inspired animals with behaviors uncharacteristic of their nature.
On the other hand, the dove could get used to the ark as a home, and therefore brought an olive branch to make it part of the nest. This is a touching gesture of gratitude to Noah, as the head of the "nest", in which all earthly life survived certain death.

The Flood lasted for 40 days and 40 nights while the rain fell and the waters increased. The waters began to recede on the 17th day of the seventh month (in the Hebrew calendar), which is typically considered to be the month of Cheshvan. This means that the rain and the initial phase of the Flood occurred during the second month (which is usually called Iyar) and continued for 40 days. The flood waters then continued to rise and cover the earth for a period before they started to recede.
