| 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

| In this part of chapter 7 we see, I would say, in great detail the description of the Flood. We are given not only the year of Noah’s age when “the windows of heaven were opened,” but also the exact month and day. We learn that the rain did not stop for 40 days and nights. The text provides a vivid picture of the Flood, we can see in our mind’s eye the ark slowly lifting above the earth. We can imagine how the highest mountains are gradually but relentlessly covered by water. We read that everything living was destroyed, except for those inside the ark, and “the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.” It is an awe-inspiring scene, in which Metropolitan Philaret notes God’s concern for Noah’s safety. God Himself shuts the door after Noah so that the waters could not get in. God had to be severe because there was no repentance in people but He took care of Noah because he was righteous.

| It`s interesting how detailed the description of the flood is. Quite a big amount of numbers is given to us: the time when it happened (the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month), the period of the rain (forty days and forty nights), the height of water (fifteen cubits upward) and etc.
But besides the numbers there is also deep spiritual meaning here, for example, the duration of the flood, lasting forty days and forty nights, is significant biblically and might be associated with a period of testing or trial. Or the Divine Sealing of the Ark: the significance of the shutting Noah into the ark by the Lord is noteworthy. It underscores the divine protection and intervention in this crucial moment.

I think the exact date is given for Noah to know when the flood will be and be ready because they needed enough food, water etc.

| What do you think it was like for Noah to spend 150 days shut in with animals?
Of course, Noah felt awful. He was scared of the great cataclysm and oppressed by darkness, constant noise, confined space and stench. I’m sure he also felt sorry for those who were outside. That’s why St. John Chrysostomos wrote that Noah couldn’t bear all these tribulations without help of the supreme, almighty power.

| How universal do you think was the flood?
Some people believe that the Flood was universal only partly. They say that it didn’t destroy all the created substance but rather people who lived then. But I suppose that the Bible gives us an evident description that every living thing including plants died during the Flood.
Based on geological and archaeological excavations, it has been established that there is a thick layer of clay and silt in the ground, which does not contain any remains of organic animal life (it was discovered in the first half of the 20th century by archaeologist Charles Leonard Woolley). This layer sharply separates the layers of the Stone Age (Paleolithic) from the subsequent layers: the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. This silt layer from the bottom of the sea occurred due to a global cataclysm, that is, the land sank below the level of the ocean, the waters of which flooded the entire earth, all the mountains. Moreover, these silt deposits cover the whole Europe, North Africa and Western Asia, up to the high mountains.
We know that more than a hundred peoples (Sumerians, Greeks and others) had legends about the Flood. Fossils of fish and shells are found high in the mountains on different continents. So I believe that the Flood was universal indeed.

Well... You've probably been to the zoo, haven't you? Even the most expensive zoos cannot replace the habitat for animals. They get bored, they become sluggish or aggressive, they get nervous and, sorry for being blunt, they stink. And now imagine yourself in a zoo, only ten times compacted, and you have to feed the animals yourself. And you can't leave because there's literally nowhere to go. To put it mildly, this is not a resort. But at least it's free and you get to survive the flood. Not that bad after all.

| Why did God shut Noah in?
I can assume, that by shutting Noah and his family in the ark, God was ensuring their safety from the impending judgment of the Flood. It symbolises God's protection over those who were righteous and obedient to His commands.
