1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.

6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,

9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

Suggested questions

Why would God, saying to Noah "for thee have I seen righteous before me", add: "in this generation"? Is righteousness relative? Also, is righteousness a condition for survival?

What are the "clean" and the "unclean" animals? (This is the first time we hear about the distinction in the Bible.) How could Noah know what they were?

Why did God ask Noah to have more clean animals in the ark than unclean?

Why did God tell Noah the exact number of days left before the flood begins (seven), as well as the number of days of the flood itself (forty)? How important are numbers seven and forty in the Bible? Are they still important in our culture?

What are the possible symbolic meanings of the ark, Noah, and the story of the flood?

In Genesis 7:1 we face God's last warning, the last call of the sinful world to repentance. He gives the command to place his family in the ark.

In the beginning of chapter 7 we see the continuation of the story about the Flood. Once again God tells Noah to bring animals and fowls into the ark, but this time there are some new details. We see that animals are divided into two groups: clean and not clean. God tells Noah that he is to take of every clean beast by sevens, and of every beast that is not clean only by two. But what are these clean beasts? Metropolitan Philaret says that these animals can be either those that the law allowed to eat or those that were sacrificed. We know that after the Flood, Noah “took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar” (Genesis 8:20.) Metropolitan Philaret argues that since there were too many animals that one was allowed to eat, it is logical to assume that clean beasts stand for only those animals and birds that were usually used for sacrifice.

I would like to comment on Entering the Ark which might be seen as a type of the Church, a place of refuge and salvation. Some of the Holy Fathers draw parallels between the ark and the Church, emphasizing that just as Noah and his family found safety in the ark, believers find safety in the Church amid the storms of life.

Since the ark becomes a symbol of the Church, providing salvation and Noah’s entire family, including his sons and their wives, enters the ark together, it emphasizes the importance of familial unity and the collective responsibility for church, continuation of which we can see in later Christian tradition.

The story of the flood is the symbol of the end of the world. The ark is the symbol of the church and the Noah's family is a symbol of the people who are in a church. Who are saved because in a church we are out of danger as in the ark.

I think these words mean that Noah was the most righteous man in the corrupted world though he was not sinless.

I also suppose that righteousness is relative. For example, if you live in a monastery it is not surprising that you spend the days in prayer and work because everyone does the same. But if you live among vicious people, you are righteous if you don’t follow their example.

Moreover, righteousness is a condition to survive. God intended to spare Sodom and Gomorrah for ten just people and saved Lot due to his virtue. Also He let Nineveh live because of the residents’ repentance.

Why did God tell Noah the exact number of days left before the flood begins (seven), as well as the number of days of the flood itself (forty)?
I suppose that it was vital for Noah to know the exact number of days connected with the beginning of the Flood and its duration. This knowledge helped Noah to make all the necessary preparation in time and not to fall into despair during the world catastrophe when all the living creatures died.

How important are numbers seven and forty in the Bible?
The numbers 7 and 40 are central in Christianity as they symbolize completeness and fullness. Seven is impossible to divide, and 40 is made by multiplication of 4 (a symbol of graphical completeness of the seen world) and 10 (3 plus 7 which also are the symbols of fullness). Therefore, 40 symbolizes absolute fullness.

Are they still important in our culture?
These numbers are still important. We have 7 Sacraments, 7 Angelic ranks. During the first 40 days after repose the human soul is wandering between Eden and hell as well as Noah was voyaging across the stormy waters. When these forty days pass, the soul like Noah finds its place of refuge.

I think  the Lord shows that He chose Noah to save the humanity, flora and fauna. Besides, Righteous person can save not only himself, but all his  family (that's why God mentioned generations) and all that exists in the world. So, God said: "In this generation to show that all people will be saved through Noah.
