| 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

Suggested questions:
Why do you think “generations” of Noah are defined in these terms: he was “a just man “ (v. 9)?
What does it mean “to walk with God” (v. 9)?
Why do you think Noah had only three sons?
What is meant by “all flesh “ (v. 12)?
How are corruption and violence connected?

| In this part of chapter 6 we are reminded again about the fact that people in those times were corrupt. And because people were corrupt, the earth itself was corrupt through them. We also see another detail of their corruption, that is, people were so violent that “the earth was filled with violence.” And God again pronounces His judgment on them, He says that He will destroy these people “with the earth.”
And only Noah and his family will be spared because “Noah walked with God,” that is, he was a righteous man. Blessed Jerome says that the praise of Noah is weakened by the addition of the words “in his generations”, meaning that he would seem perfect only in comparison with his contemporaries, but Metropolitan Philaret argues that Noah’s virtues are revealed even more by the fact that he was perfect in his generations, that is, he was perfect in the time of universal corruption. And so, God tells Noah to build his famous ark and the text describes in detail its physical characteristics.

| What does it mean “to walk with God” (v. 9)? I suppose it means that Noah was the only person who was a righteous man. Noah was perfect in his generations. God decided to protect him and his family and chooses him among others to build the ark.

| What does it mean “to walk with God” (v. 9)? It seems to me that this phrase can be understood this way: Noah walked, that is, lived, in the presence of God. Saint Theophan the Recluse asserts that this is one the most vital things if we want to be saved - to walk in the presence of God. It means, Noah remembered that the Lord is always near and tried to please Him (as we read in Church Slavonic: «Богу угоди Ное»). He was pious and righteous, at least in comparison to his generations, and tried to correlate his actions with the commandments of the Lord.

| Why do you think “generations” of Noah are defined in these terms: he was “a just man “ (v. 9)? There were no good people except Noah and his family. He was not sinless but in that corrupted world he was the most righteous.
What is meant by “all flesh “ (v. 12)? According to St. John Chrysostom, “flesh” are people who take care only for their bodies and look for carnal pleasures. They do not think about their souls and virtue means nothing for them.
How are corruption and violence connected? I think it implies that they committed sexually motivated crimes.
