1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Suggested questions

Why do you think the serpent formulates his question the way he does (v. 1)?

Why do you think Eve adds "neither shall ye touch it" which is absent from the original commandment as given in Gen. 2:17?

What do you think "opening of the eyes" and "knowing good and evil" means in v. 5?

Comment upon the obvious correlation between  Eve's reaction to the tree  ("the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise", v. 6) - and St. John the Theologian's definition of the things of the world ("For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." 1 John 2:16).

Nothing is said in the text about Adam's motives for eating of the tree. Why do you think he did it?

"The the eyes of them both were opened" (v. 7) - just like the serpent promised. Does this mean that his other promises also came true?

"They knew that they were naked" (v. 7) - why do you think it happened and what does it mean?

Why do you think Adam and Eve made "aprons" (and not jackets, coats or cloaks)?

«They knew that they were naked» (v. 7) - why do you think it happened and what does it mean?

The awareness of Adam and Eve of nakedness symbolizes the loss of innocence and God`s Grace, by which they in a metaphorical sense were covered and in which they were «clothed». The realization of nakedness exposes their newfound self-awareness and the consequences of disobedience.

I thnk  Adam and Eve made aprons because they discovered that they were naked  and had to make something really quickly to cover up nakedness. Besides, they didn't have proper materials to make a jacket or a coat and they even didn't know what it is. So, they made aprons.

Why do you think the serpent formulates his question the way he does (v. 1)?

Obviously, God didn’t give such a meaningless prohibition (“Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden”). He created all the wonderful trees with amazing fruit specifically for people. But the serpent from the very beginning lies because he is the father of lie and distorts the Lord’s commandment to make it meaningless, hard and unrealisable so that people look at God as at a tyrant.

And this Satan’s policy continues up to this day. People face some distortions of the Christian faith and they suppose that God wants to prohibit everything, that His commandments are unbearable and impossible to fulfil. It causes inner objection, irritation and anger towards God, and this is exactly Satan’s purpose.
