15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Suggested questions:

Why do you think God commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (vs. 16-17)?

What did God mean by "die" in verse 17? Did Adam die in the day he ate of the tree? Meanwhile, God promised this quite emphatically: "thou shalt surely die" (v. 17).

God always saw that all his creation was "good". In v. 18 we hear for the first time "it is not good" - about man being alone. How does this affect our perception of this statement? How bad is "not good" when God speaks about His own creation?

Why do you think God defines the woman as "an help" for the man (v. 18)? What kind of help does man need from a woman?

What is the point in God's bringing creatures to Adam for naming them (v. 19)?

Why did God make a woman out of Adam's rib?

Why do you think it is necessary for man to leave his father and mother before he cleaves unto his wife? What do you think is meant here by "leave"?

The expression “one flesh” is sometimes understood to be about having sex. Do you think this is the right interpretation? If not, what does “they shall be one flesh” mean?

Why do you think Adam and Eve were not ashamed being naked at this stage?

1. Why do you think God commanded Adam not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (vs. 16-17)?

God's command might serve as a test of obedience and an act of demonstration of human free will. It emphasizes the importance of choice and moral responsibility for humans before the Lord and themselves.

2. What did God mean by "die" in verse 17? Did Adam die in the day he ate of the tree? Meanwhile, God promised this quite emphatically: "thou shalt surely die" (v. 17).

The term «die» in this context refers to both physical and spiritual death. Of course, Adam did not immediately die physically, firstly occurred the spiritual separation from God and then, many years after Adam died in the physical meaning.

I think God made woman out of Adams rib to show that a man and a woman are  really one flesh. These rlationship is the same as the relationship of brother and sister, or of son and daughter and their mother. That's why there can't be divorcing from the religious point of view.

Of course, Adam didn’t die in the day he ate of the tree for he died when he was 930 years. However, first of all, he died spiritually at the moment when he committed a sin. The Holy Spirit left him and his soul turned into a corpse. The same case we can read in the Gospel – when the prodigal son returned, his father told that this son was dead and revived. This is the spiritual death.
And secondly, his body became mortal. From this crucial moment of the Fall Adam’s nature transformed, became corruptible and now nobody can live forever physically.
