| 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

Suggested questions:
What do the phrases "were finished" (v. 1), "ended his work" (v. 2) suggest about creation? About the theory of evolution?
Do you keep the Sabbath? If yes, in what way? What does it mean for you that "God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it" (v. 3)?
Why do you think the writer of Genesis would return to the creation of plants and climatic conditions which existed before they were created in verses 5-6?
What is meant by "the dust of the ground" man is formed of (v. 7)? Why do you think the way man was created ("formed") is different from creation of other creatures ("let there be")? What implications does it have for the theory of evolution?
Why do you think the writer of Genesis returns to the subject of man's creation in ch. 2 after describing it in ch. 1, vs. 26-27)?
Why do you think God puts the man in a garden (v. 8) after giving him commandment to "be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth" (1, 28)?
Why do you think it is mentioned that the trees of the garden of Eden were not only "good for food", but also "pleasant to the sight" (v. 9)?
What is the tree of life? The tree of knowledge of good and evil (v.9)?
Most names mentioned in vs. 11-14 are unknown to historians. Why do you think that is?

It`s hard to give a definite answer to this question, so I will provide two points of view.
On the one hand, the phrases «were finished» and «ended his work» suggest a completion and fulfillment of the creative process which does not align with the gradual progression of evolution, they emphasize the idea of a purposeful and ordered creation.
On the other hand, it might mean that the all the creatures were created with the integrated ability to adapt and evolve, which is also may mean the complete process of creation in the broad understanding.

| I think that the tree of life is " God" and the opportunity to talk to him. Talking to God was a kind of extra food for first man. God forbade to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, but it is in Eden that man could show free will. God gives obedience to man and believes that man can cope with this obedience. He gives a chance to demonstrate this obedience. Hence, the tree of knowledge of good and evil is the tree of the human will. These trees are the symbols of presence of God's will and human will in the world.

I suppose that it is written again in the second chapter about the creation of plants to explain how climate worked. Before the Great Flood our land was watered by a mist. The fact that rain just didn’t exist in the beginning is marvellous for me. Now researchers prove that there was a special period in the history of the world when only a mist watered the earth. People who lived then didn’t know what rain is. That’s why they were troubled when Noah told them that it was going to pour with rain, they just couldn’t imagine it. So, in the 6th verse we get to know about the climatic conditions at the beginning of creation.

Because of God’s love for people. He wanted them to live in a beautiful world.

I believe that God, in His infinite wisdom, took care not only of the bodily needs of the first humans but also of their moral and aesthetic education. We must remember that the first humans were to inherit the Earth and so they were supposed to be fully developed in both a bodily and spiritual sense. This also reminds us that humans cannot live by bread alone and that humans are nothing without a higher purpose.

Yes, I keep the Sabbath and dedicate it to Christ and spiritual work. Sabbath, for us, Orthodox Christians, is Sunday. On Sunday I go to church and partake of Communion. I reflect on the week passed and say my thanks to God for it. I suppose that God blessed the seventh day that humans spend it fruitfully, homing in on their spiritual work: prayer and sacraments.

| What does it mean for you that "God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it" (v. 3)?
I have listened to a catechetical lecture on the fourth commandment by Fr. Josiah Trenham, which can be found on the app of Patristic Nectar Publications. In it, Fr. Josiah emphasises the importance of setting the seventh day apart from the rest and makes the distinction between honouring the Sabbath (Saturday) and the Lord's Day (Sunday) in the New Testament; Saturday is the day when we remember the work of creation. Fr. Josiah also quotes St. Philaret of Moscow, who says that "Jesus is our Sabbath rest". Still, the seventh day is the "dwelling time" of God in the way that churches are His "dwelling place", even though God is outside of space and time. I think this could be connected to the verse about sanctifying: it is a special time when we need to devote all of our time and effort to works of faith, in contrast to the other six days that we must labour according to the same commandment. The holy days must not be "degraded" by unholy things, whether it's sin, non-essential work, or certain kinds of entertainment.

I try to keep the Sabbath in a sense that that day and the day before we attend evening and morning services, we read together the Canons and the Order and hopefully receive the sacraments. We can visit our parents or friends and if they need something we try to help as I don’t believe Sabbath is for doing nothing, but for devoting time to God and close ones or those in need, as God said Himself that by helping “the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”. It is also a great idea to go on a pilgrimage even within Moscow, or explore another monastery or a church.
So, for me, when God had finished creating everything on the seventh day, for that it didn’t seem any less meaningful and important, He blessed it, though all other six days were also blessed, and sanctified or separated from other days so we can devote our time to God and our soul. He also stopped creating things from non-existence to existence but continued to preserve and manage them.

I suppose it might be like that because a human is one of the sources of life and prosperity, just like trees in the garden.
