| 20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Suggested questions
"Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life?
Compare phrases: "God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly..." (v. 20), "God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature..." (v. 24) -- and phrases "God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly..." (v. 21), "God made the beast of the earth..." (v. 24). Is there any ambiguity about the origin of higher forms of life (were they "brought forth" by water/earth or created by God directly)?
Why do you think the phrase "after his/their kind" is repeated every so often when describing creation (cf. earlier vs. 11-12 about plants)? What might it refer to, if we speak in scientific terms?
Why and how do you think God's blessing is connected to His commandment to "multiply" (verses 22, 28)?
What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?
What are the implications of God's cosmic design that man has "dominion" over all creation (vs. 26, 28)? How relevant is this today?
"Male and female created he them" (v. 27). What is the relevance of this for modern gender theories?
What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism?

| "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life?
According to the modern theories of the origin of life (at least those that I know) it echoes the concept of life originating in the waters, as suggested by evolutionary biology. The progression from water life to flying creatures may be referred to the evolutionary process of diversification and adaptation.
What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?
The distinction between the image and likeness of God in man is a very important theological question. But most of the theologians think that the «image» refers to the human nature and attributes that make humanity distinct from other creatures, such as free will and ability to create. The «likeness» involves the potential for moral and spiritual approach to God (Deification), implying a dynamic relationship between God and humanity and the path to Salvation.

| What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?
The image of God is given to each person who comes to this world. It is about the essence of life. We all, first of all, exist and, secondly, our existence is eternal. While the likeness of God is a task that a person should implement during his/her life. We can develop this likeness turning our will towards good. Everyone has the image of God while the likeness of God can be discovered only by some people. According to St. Gregory Palamas after Adam’s sin we lost the likeness of God but the image of God remains with us because it is inalienable. 2

| "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life? - To answer this question I used a biology textbook for 9th grade. According to the theories of A. I. Oparin (1924) and J. Haldane (1929), life originated in the oceans.
What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)? - The image of God is in every person from their birth and is inalienable. The likeness of God is a condition, which is achieved by God's grace and keeping His commandments. In other words, the likeness of God is sainthood.
What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism? - Before the fall people and animals didn’t need meat. They ate only vegetable food.

| "Male and female created he them" (v. 27). What is the relevance of this for modern gender theories?
Modern gender theories do not deny the existence of male and female sexes. Many theorists insist that we should define sex separately from gender, with gender being social and sex being a medical term. The fact that God created male and female shows us that God created two people of different sexes, which is logical because only people of different sexes are capable of conceiving children.

| What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?
The image is what we were given from our birth - we have conscience, inclination to follow God's commandments, to hear His Voice. The image is already realized in a person and is the first step on the path to the likeness. But the likeness is what we should acquire during our earthly life. It's holiness.

| Why and how do you think God's blessing is connected to His commandment to "multiply" (verses 22, 28)?
This can mean that the blessing of God, meaning His will for animals and people to multiply, is what gives them the power to do it. It also means that God deemed it good for them to multiply, so that every good thing is constantly growing in number and becoming better.

What are the implications of God's cosmic design that man has "dominion" over all creation (vs. 26, 28)? How relevant is this today?
Dominion over creation implies the power that man has to either tend to Earth and protect it, or use it for evil/his own purposes, especially after the flood: "And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered" (Genesis 9:2). This is another expression of the free will that God gives to man; what we choose to do with it, as with the other gifts we have received, is our responsibility before God.

Some people believe (I have heard such opinions several times) that this phrase teaches us "fixity of species", while actually it is a more abstract Hebrew term that refers not to "species", but to genuses, that is: a wide variety of species inside families that can interchange genes by breeding and so on.

| What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism?
God not only created man but took care of his nutrition. From the very beginning both men and animals were vegetarians, in other words, they were fasting. They were eating only herbs and fruits. So four Fasts, that the Church keeps, symbolize four rivers of Paradise. We are called to keep them so our soul is protected from devil’s destruction, as well as in order to acquire Grace in our hearts. People that we become by fasting and praying make us similar to people living in paradise who ate only greens.

| What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism?
I believe that these Bible verses have nothing to do with vegetarianism, the commandments God gave to people are a far cry from what we call vegetarianism today. Who are today's vegetarians? People who make a personal choice to avoid eating anything that was once alive (animals and fish). They do it for different reasons: ecology, health, a simple dislike of meat, moral opposition to killing animals.
What does any of that have to do with God's words in these verses? Absolutely nothing. The point of any fasts prescribed by God is submission to His will. Modern vegetarianism, even if it is motivated by good intentions (not to kill animals), is a self-imposed human decision, not a desire to obey God. Besides, there is no longer any need to obey in terms of not eating meat. Those verses were meant for the very first man, Adam, before his fall into sin. Life back then was soaked in God's grace, they did not have the same needs as we do. Even the animals in paradise were given only plants to eat. As St. Basil the Great pointed out that our birds of prey eat dead flesh now, but in the paradise everything was alive, there was no death, so no flesh could be even possible.
However, everything changed with the Fall of Man. Humanity lost that grace od paradise and we've been getting weaker ever since. That's why, after the Flood, God gave Noah a new command: "All your animals, birds, and fish will be afraid of you. They are given to you. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you, just like the plants I gave you before" (Genesis 9:2-3). Due to the weakness of our flesh and spirit, God gave us new rules about food. Later He gave us the four fasts we keep today. But I insist we can't call those fasts "vegetarianism," because we do them to save our souls following God's command. Vegetarians, it seems, are the ones least likely to be thinking about God's word when they make that choice.
