20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Suggested questions

"Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life?

Why do you think the phrase "after his/their kind" is repeated every so often when describing creation (cf. earlier vs. 11-12 about plants)? What might it refer to, if we speak in scientific terms?

Why and how do you think God's blessing is connected to His commandment to "multiply" (verses 22, 28)?

What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?

What are the implications of God's cosmic design that man has "dominion" over all creation (vs. 26, 28)? How relevant is this today?

"Male and female created he them" (v. 27).  What is the relevance of this for modern gender theories?

What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism?

"Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life?

According to the modern theories of the origin of life (at least those that I know) it echoes the concept of life originating in the waters, as suggested by evolutionary biology. The progression from water life to flying creatures may be referred to the evolutionary process of diversification and adaptation.

What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?

The distinction between the image and likeness of God in man is a very important theological question. But most of the theologians think that the «image» refers to the human nature and attributes that make humanity distinct from other creatures, such as free will and ability to create. The «likeness» involves the potential for moral and spiritual approach to God (Deification), implying a dynamic relationship between God and humanity and the path to Salvation.

What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)?

The image of God is given to each person who comes to this world. It is about the essence of life. We all, first of all, exist and, secondly, our existence is eternal. While the likeness of God is a task that a person should implement during his/her life. We can develop this likeness turning our will towards good. Everyone has the image of God while the likeness of God can be discovered only by some people. According to St. Gregory Palamas after Adam’s sin we lost the likeness of God but the image of God remains with us because it is inalienable.

"Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly..." (v. 20). How does this correspond to the modern theories of the origin of life? - To answer this question I used a biology textbook for 9th grade. According to the theories of A. I. Oparin (1924) and J. Haldane (1929), life originated in the oceans.

What is the difference between the image and the likeness of God in man (v. 26)? - The image of God is in every person from their birth and is inalienable. The likeness of God is a condition, which is achieved by God's grace and keeping His commandments. In other words, the likeness of God is sainthood.

What do verses 29-30 tell us about vegetarianism? - Before the fall people and animals didn’t need meat. They ate only vegetable food.

"Male and female created he them" (v. 27).  What is the relevance of this for modern gender theories?

Modern gender theories do not deny the existence of male and female sexes. Many theorists insist that we should define sex separately from gender, with gender being social and sex being a medical term. The fact that God created male and female shows us that God created two people of different sexes, which is logical because only people of different sexes are capable of conceiving children.

The image is what we were given from our birth - we have conscience, inclination to follow God's commandments, to hear His Voice. The image is already realized in a person and is the first step on the path to the likeness.
But the likeness is what we should acquire during our earthly life. It's holiness.
