All my happiness and unhappiness are contained in the thoughts and inclinations of my heart. If the thoughts and inclinations of my heart are in accord with God’s truth or with the will of my God, then I am at rest, filled with divine light, joy, and blessedness; if not, I am uneasy, filled with spiritual, soul-corrupting darkness, heaviness, and despondency.

The point of this quote by Righteous John, the Wonderworker of Kronstadt, is that we should pay attention to our thoughts and inclinations. These have a strong influence on our lives, because the devil always attacks Christians through the mind and body. Every day, we have different kinds of thoughts, some of which come from God, and others from evil forces. I agree with Righteous John. I can feel the difference when my thoughts are "in accord with God's truth": I feel safe, calm and confident. But if my thoughts or inclinations are not in line with God's will, my heart becomes heavy and I feel constant discontent and resentment. This is why I can quote from the Proverbs of Solomon: "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7).

Reading this quote by John of Kronstadt felt like someone describing a pattern I’ve noticed but never put into words so clearly. He’s saying that our happiness or misery doesn’t really depend on what’s happening around us, but on what’s happening inside us. Specifically, the thoughts and desires we hold in our hearts. When those inner movements line up with truth and goodness, we feel peace. And when they don’t, we feel restless, heavy, or stuck. I see this point of view and I agree with it completely. It’s not that external things don’t matter, but that our inner posture shapes how we experience everything else. It’s easy to spot this in daily life. Think about a small conflict, like a tense conversation with a family member or someone else. If I hold onto the desire to be “right” or to win the argument, I walk away feeling drained and bitter. But if I let go of that need and choose to listen, even if we don’t fully agree, I feel lighter afterward. The situation didn’t change dramatically, but my inner position did. I think that’s exactly what John of Kronstadt is describing.
I’ve noticed this pattern in my own life actually. There are days when I can wake up already feeling anxious, and often it’s because my mind is replaying a worry or a regret. When I pause and consciously shift my focus, maybe by saying a short prayer, or just naming one thing I’m thankful for. The heaviness doesn’t always vanish, but it loses its grip.

In this quotation Righteous John of Kronstadt directly asserts that happiness and unhappiness do not primarily depend on external circumstances but are manifested in the "thoughts and inclinations of the heart." The inner state
is more important than the external one. Peace and joy are not merely emotions, but signs of the right spiritual direction—an indication that one is acting correctly, which is why the soul feels calm. Conversely, if one experiences irritation or heaviness, it means one is moving away from God. Therefore, it is important to always listen to the inner voice so as not to lose this spiritual orientation and to live in accordance with God’s will. The state of the soul is a direct reflection of its relationship with God.

I completely agree with this quote, because it perfectly describes the state of sobriety and despondency in everyday life. The main point lies precisely in the difference between these two states: when we move away from God, begin to behave idly and unbecomingly to Christian morality, a feeling of deep spiritual emptiness and longing gradually increases. Unbeknownst to us, life without God loses all meaning. However, we are very lucky that there is an easy way to get out of this state of mind. It is enough to resume prayers, go to the temple to receive communion of the holy mysteries of Christ, talk with the priest, and you will immediately feel how much easier and calmer it becomes, which is described in the quote. From personal experience, I can give you an example when, during a period of hard work on my studies, for example, during a session, I do not have time to attend church, and sometimes I do not even have the strength to pray. I can't help but feel discouraged, and as soon as this happens, I go to church the first time I get the chance, and I thank God for his presence and any help in my life and that of my loved ones.
