| Do not despond in the time of violent temptations, afflictions, or sicknesses, or at obstacles arising from the disturbance of the enemy; all this is the reproof and chastisement of the righteous Lord, Who trieth the hearts and reins, for your cleansing, arousing, and correction, for burning out the thorns of carnal passions. And therefore do not complain if you sometimes suffer greatly. Do not think of the suffering, but of the blessed consequences of this chastisement, and the health of the soul.

| Temptations, afflictions, and sicknesses are believed to be tools in the hands of God to humble us and lead us to salvation. Some Holy Fathers call these hardships a 'bitter medicine'. Macarius of Optina wrote that God bestows grace at the beginning of one’s spiritual journey but later allows temptations so that people may learn to trust in God’s mercy.
I found God when I was an adult, therefore, there were things I had not known about at all or had only known superficially. I was deeply astonished to learn about monks who prayed to be sent adversities or diseases. Little did I know about the life of fools for Christ. In the book 'Sisters: An Essay on the Lives of the Ascetic Sisters Anisia, Matrona, and Agafya', which my mother had gifted me, I learned how some people deliberately make fools of themselves with the blessing of their spiritual father. Having learned this, I changed my attitude toward the difficulties sent my way, although I still very often fall prey to despondency.
In the modern world, happiness is primarily portrayed in materialistic terms. What’s more, it is expected to be a constant phenomenon. Taking this into account, it may seem that Orthodoxy encourages suffering for its own sake, especially if the afterlife is not part of one’s worldview. Admitting that trials are a remedy feels like going against the grain, yet it enables people to attain something greater.

| The point of this quote by Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt, is that people should not avoid temptetions and sicknesses beacause they come from God and help to save your soul, to become better. Suffering is not a senseless evil, but a path to spiritual growth and atonemetn for sins. Temporal torment cannot be compared with future glory. I think I can provide another quote on this theme, which helps me to overcome troubles: "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (Corinthians 10:13)

| Despondency is a state of complete hopelessness, when a person sees only the bad in life and gradually sinks into "darkness." Righteous John of Kronstadt precisely speaks about how a person's life can change if they ask not "Why is this happening to me?" but "What is this for?" We all grow spiritually only through sufferings and trials, therefore the Lord sends them to us out of His love for us. This, on the contrary, should give support to our faith and the desire to move forward. It is also very difficult for me sometimes to accept this, but even Christ Himself voluntarily accepted a martyr's death, offering Himself as a sacrifice of love for all of us. The apostle Paul wrote: "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church" (Col. 1:24). Earthly trials are temporary, while their fruits are eternal. "For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison" (2 Cor. 4:17). Sometimes it is worth trusting God, understanding that we see only a small part, while He sees the whole picture of our life. Even if it is difficult, we should give thanks for everything and believe. Although it is very hard for me personally, I try to work on myself.

| I completely agree with this quote, because its author has wonderfully revealed the meaning of Divine providence in our daily lives. Let's start in order: the priest tells us that sometimes everyone faces various kinds of problems, troubles and other troubles. They can be different - both insignificant and very large. It is the latter that are the hardest to bear, not only on a physical level, but also on a spiritual one. I want to give up, lose faith, and become discouraged, which can lead to very tragic consequences. It is important to change the attitude towards such pranks of life - to perceive them as punishment for the purpose of salvation. The preacher says in direct words that the Lord is trying to cleanse our soul and heal it through chastisement. Therefore, one should not think about suffering, but about the blessed consequences and the healing of the soul. It seems to me that, thank God, I have never had to deal with something like this, but I will try not to forget about the words of the visionary and continue to believe.
