| Do not despond in the time of violent temptations, afflictions, or sicknesses, or at obstacles arising from the disturbance of the enemy; all this is the reproof and chastisement of the righteous Lord, Who trieth the hearts and reins, for your cleansing, arousing, and correction, for burning out the thorns of carnal passions. And therefore do not complain if you sometimes suffer greatly. Do not think of the suffering, but of the blessed consequences of this chastisement, and the health of the soul.
Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt

| Temptations, afflictions, and sicknesses are believed to be tools in the hands of God to humble us and lead us to salvation. Some Holy Fathers call these hardships a 'bitter medicine'. Macarius of Optina wrote that God bestows grace at the beginning of one’s spiritual journey but later allows temptations so that people may learn to trust in God’s mercy.
I found God when I was an adult, therefore, there were things I had not known about at all or had only known superficially. I was deeply astonished to learn about monks who prayed to be sent adversities or diseases. Little did I know about the life of fools for Christ. In the book 'Sisters: An Essay on the Lives of the Ascetic Sisters Anisia, Matrona, and Agafya', which my mother had gifted me, I learned how some people deliberately make fools of themselves with the blessing of their spiritual father. Having learned this, I changed my attitude toward the difficulties sent my way, although I still very often fall prey to despondency.
In the modern world, happiness is primarily portrayed in materialistic terms. What’s more, it is expected to be a constant phenomenon. Taking this into account, it may seem that Orthodoxy encourages suffering for its own sake, especially if the afterlife is not part of one’s worldview. Admitting that trials are a remedy feels like going against the grain, yet it enables people to attain something greater.

| The point of this quote by Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt, is that people should not avoid temptetions and sicknesses beacause they comes from God and help to save your soul, to become better. Suffering is not a senseless evil, but a path to spiritual growth and atonemetn for sins. Temporal torment cannot be compared with future glory. I think I can provide another quote on this theme, which helps me to overcome troubles: "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." (Corinthians 10:13)
