When the chanting is as beautiful as this, we are freed from all our cares and our interest for earthly things and we ascend into eternity with the Lord, His angels, and the saints, where our true Fatherland and our Kingdom is.

This quote from Elder Thaddeus (Strabulovich) of Vitovnica gets at something miraculous about liturgical worship. When the chanting is beautiful, really beautiful, you’re being drawn into something eternal. The worries and distractions that normally fill your head just fall away, and for a moment you’re not thinking about what’s next on your to-do list. It reminds me of King David bringing the Ark to Jerusalem. He wasn’t thinking about royal dignity or what people would say. He danced before the Lord “with all his might” (2 Samuel 6:14). His wife Michal was embarrassed for him, but David didn’t care. He said, “I will celebrate before the Lord” (2 Samuel 6:21). That’s what happens when you’re truly in God’s presence. You stop worrying about how you look or what you’re losing and just respond in joy.

Elder Thaddeus is saying something similar. The kind of worship he’s talking about isn’t just pleasant; it’s transformative. It gives us a taste of what we’re actually made for. For a moment, heaven doesn’t feel distant, and we remember that this world—with all its noise and worries—isn’t our final home:

"...we ascend into eternity with the Lord, His angels, and the saints, where our true Fatherland and our Kingdom is."

Цитата You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(Psalm 16:11)

Church singing is an interesting musical phenomenon. Among all musical genres, church chanting undoubtedly stands out and is something special because it is created not for man’s sake, but for God’s — specifically to lift our thoughts toward God and His angels, and to enable deeper, more earnest prayer. Church singing helps to create the unique, stunning beauty of the Divine Liturgy. However, I would like to say that in our time, the understanding of singing at the Liturgy often shifts in the wrong direction, as it seems to me.

As I’ve already said, we sing during services to glorify God and to create a prayerful atmosphere for the faithful. But sadly, people often forget this. There is a concept known as "obikhod" singing — these are the chants used during services, which are not very complex; they can be sung by choir members without a formal musical education, they are traditional and known to almost everyone. But many people find it boring to sing music that is not the most complex (even though it is no less beautiful, because it also glorifies God) and is so familiar. As a result, many original sacred compositions are being created today notable for their novelty and complexity. And while these are very beautiful and undoubtedly also glorify God, such chants often fail to fulfill one of their main functions: they do not help the worshippers to pray. I have often heard people say: "I cannot pray to this kind of music; it is so original, beautiful, and unusual that I forget about prayer and just listen to the singing." This is not quite right and is rather sad. We come to church primarily to pray, we can listen to music at a concert. So I think it is very important to maintain a balance. Any music that glorifies God is beautiful, but in church, the music must create a prayerful atmosphere, not distract from it.

In this quote, Elder Thaddeus describes how church chanting affects people during worship. Beautiful harmonious singing really creates a specific atmosphere in the church and makes you forget about earthly problems, fears and wishes at once. Singing awakens emotions, it can touch hidden parts of the soul. It is an important part of worship, but at the same time, it can distract you. Sometimes, it can be so wonderful that people forget about prayer and begin to dream. So, I think people should remember that the church is not a place for listening to music. We can appreciate chanting because it glorifies God, but we shouldn't pay too much attention to it and follow the service.
