| The fundamental task in life is to save one's soul for eternity. Keep this as the most essential task, the main concern of your life. Woe to those whose indifference and neglect bring their souls to eternal ruin.
May the Lord bless you and help you. + Metropolitan Philaret of New York. Guidelines for Orthodox Christians (8 of 8)

| The soul is immortal, the body is not. Therefore, the main goal of life is to cleanse the soul from sin through repentance, prayer, sacraments, and virtues, so that it may enter eternal life with God (cf. Mt. 6:33: «Seek first the Kingdom of God»). Do not let routine or temptations distract you. Everyday is a gift to you from God, not from the world. St. John Chrysostom said: «Time is the coin of the soul; do not spend it on vanity». However, danger lurks in indifference. «Woe» is a biblical warning about the Judgment (Is. 5:20). Indifference (apathy toward sin) and neglect (ignoring spiritual life) are «soul-killers», leading to spiritual death. This is about gradual alienation from God. Fortunately, God awaits not perfection, but striving. Your salvation depends on your choice.

| I agree with the above quote. It contains the truth represented in the Gospel, when Christ Himself said: "...whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it." The goal of every Christian's life is to try to live this earthly life in such a way that after leaving this world they would be with God in eternal life. Of course, this is very difficult, because we are used to looking at the world in a certain way, let's say, in a human way, and God looks at the world and people differently. We sometimes worry about what awaits us tomorrow, we have hopes, fears, desires, needs and so on. And Christ said that we need not care about tomorrow. It is complicated for us to even look at life through the prism of the Gospel, at the same time we should try to live according to it.To think less about earthly things, you need to change yourself, your thinking, your mindset - and this is like breaking your mind in pieces and putting it back together in a new order. I think, it's almost impossible for a man, but for God everything is possible.

| The point of this statement by Metropolitan Philaret is that we should prepare our souls for eternal life. I agree with this quote. As Christ said, "What good is it to a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?" (Matthew 16:26). We should do everything to achieve salvation, not neglect it. Our bodies are mortal, but our souls are immortal, and everything we do affects them. That's why we should be active Christians and discipline ourselves. Reading the Holy Scriptures and the works of the holy fathers, observing the commandments of God, and fasting helps in this. I believe that our salvation is our responsibility.

| I understand this statement as a reminder that eternal life is more important than our mortal life. This life is temporary and finite, but we always forget about this and become absorbed in vanity and worldly concerns. We care about everything except our soul, often dooming it to destruction. But we should remember that nothing other than our soul is eternal. Our body and all our material goods will die, for "thou art earth and to the earth shalt thou return" (Genesis 3:19). Only our soul is immortal, and our salvation depends on its state.
At the same time, we should remember: we can change our soul only when we are alive, because only during life is a person capable of repentance. We should use this time to save ourselves, but the problem is that we forget how fleeting time is. I remember the words from the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which reflect this idea perfectly: "My soul, arise! Why art thou sleeping? The end is drawing near, and thou wilt be confounded." The end is really drawing near, so we should always keep our "fundamental task" in mind to be saved.

| I completely agree with this quote, especially since it is not considered a "guideline for Orthodox Christians" for nothing. The Metropolitan directly shows that the true meaning of life is the salvation of one's soul. This is the most important and basic thing that should concern every person. Unfortunately, many people don't even think about it, which also comes up in the end in the form of regret for their ignorance. I believe that this is a fundamental truth of every Orthodox Christian. Many people remember this, but they forget it anyway, which is why we must continue to pray.
