Try to live piously. Pray to God in church, pray to God at home - fervently, with faith, trusting yourself to God's will. Fulfill the holy and saving precepts of the Church, Her rules and commandments. Outside the Church, outside obedience to Her, there is no salvation.

My grandma always says that you can't just be a Christian on your own terms; it's about being part of the Church community, living by its rhythm of prayer and sacraments. Well it seems to me that God hears our prayers wherever we are. I do get that we need to go to church to be united in prayer, and it's also a kind of personal effort - to make time in your life to go. Personally, I go to church with my family every Sunday and we pray together in the evenings.
Sometimes it feels more like an obligation, and other times I actually feel like I benefit from it. But I know that God always hears, even when I don't feel it. So it's worth praying - to thank God for what I have and to ask Him for help, and when we pray together in church, the power of our prayers will be multiplied.

I understand this point, and the idea of praying constantly and everywhere seems very correct and important to me. Every Christian should always be with God and, therefore, maintain communication with Him, striving to preserve this connection with the Lord and to fill their entire life with the sense of God’s presence. That is why we should always remember God; of course, this is impossible outside the Church, for only there can we be as close to God as possible. As Cyprian of Carthage said, “Whoever does not have the Church as his mother, does not have God as his father.” However, it is also important to pray not only in church but also at home, as noted here. In summary, we must strive to have God present in our lives constantly to attain salvation.

Metropolitan Philaret emphasizes that salvation is inseparable from the Church, prayer, and obedience to Her commandments. At first glance, this statement may seem straightforward, even a bit repetitive, because it reiterates basic truths of the Orthodox faith: life in Christ and participation in the Church are essential for the soul. Yet, reading these words also provokes reflection. I often wonder about people who have never heard of Christ, such as remote tribes or isolated communities. Are their souls lost simply because they lack access to the Church or knowledge of God?

This question highlights a mystery of divine justice and mercy. The Orthodox Church teaches that God’s judgment is perfectly just and merciful. While the sacraments and commandments are the ordinary means of salvation, God alone knows the hearts of all people and provides grace according to His wisdom. My understanding is that God can act beyond visible structures, even while the Church remains the sure path for those who know Her. This thought does not diminish the importance of obedience, but it encourages humility and trust in God’s mercy, acknowledging that salvation ultimately depends on Him, not merely on human knowledge or circumstance.

To be honest, at first I misunderstood this quote and wanted to write a long essay in response. In fact, I respect the entire Church tradition, and part of me longs for the absolute certainty that faithfully following the Church's path is a guaranteed path to salvation. But another part of me wanted to argue, as I perceived the Church literally, as a building. However, the Church is not just a beautiful building with domes and icons; by the Church we can also understand a community, a gathering of people who strive for salvation. At first, I thought of the elderly and sick, who are physically unable to come to church. But when I realized that we were talking not about the building itself, but about the community, everything fell into place. I agree with this expression statement of Metropolitan Philaret.

It's quite easy today to treat faith as a personal mood or aesthetic, like something we can customize, pick and choose from, or set aside when inconvenient. I think Metropolitan Philaret reminds that Orthodoxy isn't just a self-help path or a cultural accessory. It's a way of life anchored in the Body of Christ (the Church), and shaped by obedience, not just a preference. Prayer isn't optional meditation, it's communion. And fasting isn't dieting, it's training the heart. Confession isn't therapy, it's healing. And all of it only bears fruit when rooted in humility and submission to Church's guidance.
The line "Outside the Church, outside obedience to Her, there is no salvation", sounds a bit harsh, but it meant to awaken, I think. The Church is where Christ left His grace, His sacraments and His truth. And to step away from it, not just physically, but spiritually, by ignoring teachings or living as if they're suggestions, is to drift from the source of life itself.

I mostly agree with this statement. The idea that prayer should take place both in church and at home seems especially important to me. Church prayer unites a person with the Body of Christ and allows them to participate in the sacraments, which are central to Orthodox life. At the same time, home prayer helps a person to keep in touch with God in everyday situations, reminding us that faith is needed not only on Sundays, but also at every moment of life.
The phrase “outside the Church…there is no salvation” may seem harsh, but within the Orthodox tradition it makes sense. The Church preserves the true faith, the sacraments and spiritual guidance that lead a person to salvation. This idea fits well with my understanding of Christianity as not just a personal belief system, but also as a social life experience.
Well, from my own experience, I notice that when I pray regularly and try to follow church teachings, I feel more peace and clarity in my life. Practically, this quote reminds me of the need to take my spiritual life seriously. I need to attend services more carefully, pray sincerely at home, and trust God's will, even when it's difficult.
