Earthly life is fleeting; one is hardly aware of the swiftness of its passing. Nevertheless, this transient life determines the eternal destiny of your soul. Do not forget this for a moment.

I totally agree with this quote and this thought perfectly reflects my vision of earthly life as a preface to our future life. I actually think that this life is given to us to prepare us for our eternal life, because our personality (if this word is appropriate here, since it doesn’t reflect full depth of the concept) is formed here and it determines our character, moral qualities, inner world, value system, spiritual development – in a word, it makes us what we are. I would say earthly life is given to us for educating our soul. We are all born with a soul, but our actions and our works we commit in this life actually determine what our soul will be like and therefore, what our eternal destiny will be like. That’s why we should be mindful of what we do and how we act here and try to behave in a way that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven. And the experience we get here is a sort of trial or preparation before entering our future life.

This quote resonates with me. I believe everything we do in our earthly life influences our eternal life. That is why the preparation of our soul is so important—our deeds impact our existence both here and hereafter.
Nevertheless, I think it is difficult to remember that life is passing every single moment. When you are engaged in the world and surrounded by people, you feel a strong connection to it. For a lay person, I think it's normal not to think about eternal life every day, as everyone has many obligations. We should not go to extremes; balance is very important. Otherwise, it is easy to start thinking that our present life matters little and to just start waiting for death. That`s not right.

Metropolitan Philaret reminds us that earthly life is fleeting, and that its brevity is easily overlooked. I agree wholeheartedly, because in the daily routine, it is easy to become absorbed in studies, work, or entertainment and forget that life passes swiftly. At the same time, he emphasizes a crucial point: this transient life directly shapes the eternal destiny of the soul. Every action, thought, and intention has consequences that extend beyond the temporal world.

I must admit that remembering this constantly is difficult, but even occasional reflection helps reorient priorities. When I contemplate the fleeting nature of life, I understand the importance of prayer, repentance, and virtuous living. Earthly struggles, labors, and small sacrifices are not meaningless; they are investments in the soul’s salvation. Awareness of the transience of life encourages vigilance over passions and inspires a humble, measured approach to daily decisions. In this light, even ordinary moments gain eternal significance, guiding the believer toward God’s mercy and eternal joy.

The key point here is that our eternity is being shaped by how we handle these ordinary, passing days. It's a sobering idea.
Most of the time, I don't think about this. I get distracted by deadlines, plans, or what's happening right in front of me. The practical takeaway for me is to try and reconnect with this perspective more often. It acts like a quiet reset button. When I'm about to respond sharply or when I'm wasting time on something pointless, remembering that this time is both short and infinitely important can change my choice. It shifts the focus from just getting through the day to considering what my actions are building towards in the long run. It's a call to be more intentional, bit by bit.

The quote is simple: our life is as short as one second, but it decides where our soul goes after death - forever. I believe it, but I often just forget. For example, I can worry about exams or a fight with a friend for weeks, as if it's the most important thing in the world. And I don't think about eternity at all. It turns out I live as if death is the end, and not a door to somewhere. That's strange, because l am a believer. So for me, just to remember, I should think about it more often. Not to be afraid, but to not waste time on silly things and to not ruin relationships for no reason.

I agree with Metropolitan Filaret's quote that it is necessary to live piously. In fact, his quote reflects the skeleton of the Orthodox path - regular communication with God, visiting the temple, and observing the commandments. In other words, this very path is embodied in life through the church, which is a spiritual body for us. Without a living connection with the Body of Christ and its Sacraments, our spiritual life will die, and all hope and faith will be lost.

This quote of Metropolitan Philaret helps us to keep our spiritual wakefulness. Sometimes life feels long and we don’t think about doing something good because it feels like we have enough time ahead. But in reality we won’t notice how quickly life would pass, and we should be careful, because every moment of this life has a great meaning. Every our choice, every prayer said before sleep, every struggle with sin determines our future without us noticing. And I kind of like it because it often helps to make the right decision. The words “Do not forget this for a moment” are strong but helpful. It is easier to argue with person who said something bad to you, but this thought of meaningfulness of every thing I do helps me to calm down and do something that will make me at least a little bit closer to our Lord. This fleeting life is the only chance for us to make our souls better.

Earthly life is fleeting - we all know it in theory, but live as if we have forever. Days blur into weeks, years slip through our fingers like sand, and suddenly, we're older, wiser maybe, but rarely closer to what truly matters.
The startling truth Metropolitan Philaret underscores is that this brief, fragile stretch of time, filled with small choices, quiet thoughts, unnoticed kindness, shapes eternity. Not in a dramatic last-minute way, but steadily, like water carving stone. Every "yes" or "no" to love, to humility, to truth, to repentance, leaves a mark on the soul that outlasts the body.
I think this obviously isn't meant to paralyze us with anxiety, but to awaken us to urgency, not frantic, but loving.

This quote makes me think about how fast time flies and how little we usually notice it. I understand its essence as a reminder that our earthly life, even if it seems ordinary and sometimes unimportant, has serious significance because it determines the eternal fate of the soul. In this sense, I agree with the quote, because our daily choices, actions, and attitudes shape who we become spiritually. At the same time, it is difficult for me to constantly remember that life is fleeting. Most of the time, people focus on their studies, work, family, and everyday problems. Based on my experience, it is quite natural to be absorbed in the present moment and forget about eternity. However, this does not mean that the idea is wrong. More likely, it shows how important reminders like this quote are. Practically, this quote encourages me to be more attentive to how I live, not waste time on things that harm my soul, and try to act with kindness and conscience.
