All saints confirmed this infallible truth that he who spends his life without struggles is forgotten by God. Do not seek, said one of them, Christian perfection in virtues among men: it is not found here on earth; it is mysteriously preserved in the Cross of Christ!

This infallible truth seems to be unpopular on the forum, perhaps because of the sobering phrase "forgotten by God". I suppose that the idea of God forgetting and remembering someone is connected with God's blessing: He remembered Noah, and the flood subsided, He remembered Rachel and Hannah, and they conceived children. So the question we need to ask is, under the new covenant, what kind of person is blessed by God? This question was asked once by a friend of mine and led to a minute of silence in our otherwise unreserved youth group discussion. When one puts it in plain English (or plain Russian for that matter), the answer becomes self-evident. Blessed are the poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure in heart, the hungry for righteousness and the persecuted because of it. All the Beatitudes build up to persecution, insults and falsehoods said against true followers of Christ. This standard of Christian perfection does go against the worldly idea of a blessed life, and it does entail taking up our cross. This is why, as grateful as I am for the blessings in my life that aren't struggles, I think this quote is well-founded.

St. Ignatius Brianchaninov reminds us that a life without struggle cannot lead a person to God, and that Christian perfection should not be sought in human virtues themselves, but in the Cross of Christ. I find this statement both sobering and truthful. Human nature is marked by weakness, inconsistency, and inner division, and no amount of moral effort can make a person flawless. When we expect perfect virtue either from ourselves or from others, we are inevitably disappointed.

This teaching helps me understand that spiritual struggle is not a sign of failure, but of life. Struggle reveals that a person is not indifferent to salvation. The Cross of Christ becomes the measure of true perfection, because it unites suffering, humility, love, and obedience to God’s will. Unlike abstract moral ideals, the Cross speaks directly to human fragility. It does not demand impossible purity, but faithful endurance. In this light, spiritual life is not about achieving perfection on earth, but about remaining in struggle, repentance, and trust in God, who alone is perfect and merciful.

To be honest, this quote seems quite contradictory to me. I am not sure about the use of the collocation “forgotten by God”, because I don't think, any person will ever
be forgotten by God, their loving Creator, despite all their sins. Of course, it is used in more deep and figurative sense, but something in these words really makes me puzzled.

In general, this thought seems correct to me. I also believe that struggles lead us toward salvation, because when we face something difficult in our life we begin to question ourselves about our moral state, struggles make us think a lot and often
develop deep understanding of this life and empathy for other people. In other
words, struggles develop virtue in us.

And as I see, that’s why “perfection in virtues” cannot be found “among men”. Because no human struggle can be more serious and significant than Christ's great sacrifice.

It goes without saying that a person whose struggles are nowhere to be found is forgotten by God.
I believe, perhaps, nowadays it is even more true than when it was first said. What makes life in 2025 stand out is it being the age of social media and constant comparing of earthly possessions. I would argue that in today's world it might be easier to fall prey to the false gods and chase perfection in whatever man finds virtuous. And it might be even a good cause like environmental changes and sustainable clothing or anything else. Modern people are bombarded with advertisements and big companies trying to impose on us what we should think and how we should live our lives ideally, which is why it is so important to go back to what Saint Ignatius said, to the truth of his quote.
We are to seek Christian perfection and it is not found on earth. And so we must fixate our eyesight on the Cross of Christ if we are to get anywhere in our spiritual life.

The author of the quote is speaking about saints. An example that I have before my eyes is a confirmation to some truth in his words: my spiritual mother struggles physically, but her prayers are heard as if she was speaking to God directly. She is not a "saint" officially, however, many of those who experienced the consequences of her prayers in their lives think that she actually is the one. I suppose saints struggle because they feel and understand everything about people they are praying for and live through other people's troubles in some seconds, which is exactly what Jesus did when he came to die for our salvation, taking on our sins. They also see how long is the way forth of some of those who ask them for their prayers, which adds to their struggle, because their hearts are kind. Meanwhile, people rarely come to them to share something joyful, so they are in constant circle of praying for other people. I believe that this is the true Cross of Christ one may witness and aim at, if they have courage and a heart to do so.

St. Ignatius not glorifying suffering for it's own sake, but pointing to a deep spiritual law. Growth happens through struggle. Not drama, not self-made chaos, but real inner effort, resistance to sin, patience in hardship, the quiet battle to stay faithful when everything in you wants to give up. And if someone sails through life untouched by such struggles, St. Ignatius warns that they may be drifting far from God's active presence.
I can say that I used to think peace meant the absence of difficulty. But over time, I've seen that the moments when I've grown most were when my faith became less theoretical and more lived. Not because for example pain is good, but because it strips away illusions. It shows you what you really trust, what you cling to, and whether your love for God survives when comfort disappears.
This doesn't mean we should seek out suffering artificially. But it does mean we shouldn't fear or avoid the struggles that come with saying "yes" to God, whether that's forgiving someone who won't apologize, staying honest when lying would be easier or simply enduring dryness in prayer without walking away.
