All saints confirmed this infallible truth that he who spends his life without struggles is forgotten by God. Do not seek, said one of them, Christian perfection in virtues among men: it is not found here on earth; it is mysteriously preserved in the Cross of Christ!

This infallible truth seems to be unpopular on the forum, perhaps because of the sobering phrase "forgotten by God". I suppose that the idea of God forgetting and remembering someone is connected with God's blessing: He remembered Noah, and the flood subsided, He remembered Rachel and Hannah, and they conceived children. So the question we need to ask is, under the new covenant, what kind of person is blessed by God? This question was asked once by a friend of mine and led to a minute of silence in our otherwise unreserved youth group discussion. When one puts it in plain English (or plain Russian for that matter), the answer becomes self-evident. Blessed are the poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure in heart, the hungry for righteousness and the persecuted because of it. All the Beatitudes build up to persecution, insults and falsehoods said against true followers of Christ. This standard of Christian perfection does go against the worldly idea of a blessed life, and it does entail taking up our cross. This is why, as grateful as I am for the blessings in my life that aren't struggles, I think this quote is well-founded.

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
