Have you ever planted a garden? Then you are aware how much care goes into every act: the preparing of the soil, the sowing of the seed, the watering of the seedling, the pruning of the mature plant. So it must be with prayer. True prayer is not the accident of happenstance, but the ripe fruit of the well-tended garden of the heart.

I like this extended metaphor of bishop Irenei where he compares prayer with a ripe fruit in the garden of our heart.

Indeed, we as week and sinful people can easily fall into despondency just because we realise how difficult it is to pray attentively and unceasingly as Christians are called to. Especially in our modern hustle culture we want to achieve our goals within a short time. However, it is practically impossible to become a saint within a month.

Of course, we feel disappointed because of our failure but we should remind ourselves that in order to achieve the state of constant prayer we should labour a lot. For we read in Gospel that “…the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force” (Mth. 11:12). («… Царство Небесное силою берется, и употребляющие усилие восхищают его» (Мф. 11:12))

To conclude, I firmly believe that bishop Irenei’s metaphor will inspire Christians not to fall into despondency but rather labour with hope anticipating the state of true prayer.

Have you planted a garden? Then, you are aware how much care goes into every act: the preparing of soil, the sowing of the seed the watering of the seeding, the pruning of the mature plant. So, it must must be the prayer. True prayer is not the accident of happenstance, but the ripe fruit of the well-tended garden of the heart. This is the quote of the bishop Irenei Steenberg. I agree with issue and I 'd like to give a commemt on it.
We know many saints who continued the tradition of hesyhasm. The traditon of the concentration on the prayer. For example, Seraphim of Sarov, or Sergei of Radonezh. The lord Himself prayed in the garden of gethsemane till the bloody sweat.  It is the demonstration of the work. A true prayer is hardwork. That's why the bishop Irenei uses this metaphor of planting the garden. If we plant the garden carefully and attentively, it will give us many fruits. The same is with a prayer. If we pray really attentively and sincerely, God will hear our prayer and we will get a fruit from our garden.

However, I should say we pray like that very seldom. Most of our prayers are the texts learned by heart. We just say the words with out any attention and concentration. Many of people in modern church even don't know the meaning of the church slovanic words in prayers. I think it must be even offensive for God.
In conclusion, I would like to say that I hope that modern christian society will pray more sincerely and attentively and every christian person will get not only one fruit from the garden of his heart

I truly believe that it is true and I can judge it from my own experience. The path to salvation is narrow, long and thorny. Christians should put a lot of effort, they should be zealous in order to obtain true divine blessed gifts of salvation. We should aim for our salvation, we should really strive for it and the only way to do so, the key to it - is prayer. Prayer is our communication and interaction with God. Saying sincere prayers can be difficult for monks, let alone a laymen. But seeing our efforts and good intentions God will teach us how to glorify Him properly. The thing is that we should be worthy of it.
