Whoever gains the ability to see his own sinfulness sees not individual sins, but the complete distortion of his soul, which constantly exudes all manner of evil. What’s more, he sees that even his good deeds are saturated with the poison of sin. When a man sees this clearly, and likewise becomes convinced after a thousand incidents that he cannot heal the leprosy of his soul on his own, then he will genuinely (not artificially) humble himself, will stop judging others, and no longer take offense when his feelings are hurt.

When a man sees this clearly, and likewise becomes convinced after a thousand incidents that he cannot heal the leprosy of his soul on his own, then he will genuinely (not artificially) humble himself, will stop judging others, and no longer take take offense when his feelings are hurt. This is the abbot Nikon Vorobiev's statement. I agree with it. I'll try to express my view on this quote.

Of course all people are sinners. There are total sinners who  commit sins and even don't think about it and there are sinners who understand that they are sinners and see their sins. Some of them see the whole picture of their sins. They see it and they are astonished and  shocked that they did a lot of bad things. It is obvious that they stop judging others because they start judging themselves. Their  sins don't let them see the  sins of others. These people partly become as the robber who was  crucified with Christ. This robber understood that he is punished for his bad things, for the evil he did to other people, but this righteous person next to him didn't do anything like that.

However, in conclusion, I have to say that it is very difficult to achieve such condition. I think we can do it only with the help of the Lord and only very slowly, step by step.

Abbot Nikon Vorobiev claims that the main necessary thing to attain humbleness is gaining the ability to see your own sinful nature. Only after realising how sinful you are, you can truly humble yourself.

I can surely agree with this thought. The main majority of our sins is are connected with arrogance. We don’t want to condescend to our neighbours’ weaknesses just because we feel that we are better, that in the same situation we would behave differently, more righteously. We look down on everybody, start judging and taking offence because we are incapable of seeing all the abomination of our own heart. That’s the main problem why we can’t change our lives completely.

On the opposite contrary, saints saw the error of their ways, they lamented and grieved because they realised all their wickedness though they were definitely much purer than we are. Yet they prayed and beseeched God to grant them one more day in order to repent.

To conclude, I firmly believe that our central purpose should be gaining this sense of sinfulness and humbleness in order to be saved.

I agree with Abbot Nikon Vorobiev, because recognizing our owndeep-rooted sinfulness leads to true humility and a transformed perspectiveon others. When we see not just isolated wrongs but the underlyingflaws in our character, it humbles us
profoundly, showing us our need for God’s help. Even our good actions are often tinged with selfish motives or
pride, reminding us of our
limitations. This self-awareness helps us to let go of judging others and to be less easily hurt, as we see
that we share similar faults. Such
humility fosters compassion and a stronger reliance on God for the
healing of our souls.

I cannot say that I fully share Abbot Nikon’s point of view. It seems to me that there is a fine line between realising one's sinfulness and humbling oneself too much.

"...he sees that even his good deeds are saturated with the poison of sin." This part of the quote leads me to think that with this approach to their spiritual life, most people will give up and decide that they are so sinful that their desire to overcome sin is meaningless, because their salvation is impossible, as they do not have the strength. I liked the words of one priest that in today's world it is not worth it to single yourself out in any way, even on the bad side. All people are sinful to about the same degree, some struggle with themselves more and some less. We are all created in the image and likeness of God, but we are immersed in the world of sin, where we must struggle with our passions.

In my opinion, it is not good for a person to hate and humiliate himself; there is a fine line: a Christian should not hate God's creation, and we ourselves are such. We should try to work on our spiritual life, discipline ourselves, communicate with priests, love all people, but it does not make sense to go into deep self-deprecation.

This quote reminded me of one episode from the play "Murder in the Cathedral" by T. S. Eliot. In that episode, the main character, Thomas Becket, is being lured by different temptations. On the one hand, Thomas recalls his youth when he was Henry's favourite, so he wants to befriend the king again, but it will definitely be a betrayal to his church. On the other hand, he wants to become a martyr and die for his faith, but this thought comes because of his pride.

These temptations clearly illustrate the idea of Abbot Nikon — the poison of sin is even in good deeds, when you want to die for the church. However, Thomas Becket in the play humbles and finds his way and sacrifices himself to save others without a sin in his soul, which is a great example of how Christians should behave.

I think this statement talks about a very important thing. It says that, only through full awareness of our sinfulness, we can become better people. But I think that the main aim of our life as Christians should be to try to stop judging others and not take offense when our feelings are hurt. Trying to become better helps us repent and realize our own sinfulness. Once you understand that there are so many things you need to do to free yourself from sin, you won't care about others at all, nor will offensive words or other people's lives make any sense to you.

I can say that I often think about what Abbot Nikon Vorobyev is talking about. How often does a small sin seem meaningless against a whole life filled with sins? Faith in virtue is also completely lost, as if a person is doing good out of desire for some benefits. When these thoughts creep into my mind often, I basically feel lost, because there seems to be nothing left. You feel absolutely devastated and the helping hand never comes. Therefore, I cannot fully agree with this quote.

I do agree that it is important to humbly acknowledge our complete sinfulness. But as an individual, I still need to know that there is something good within me. Good deeds are not about receiving rewards, but rather being motivated by true values. Our transgressions somehow will be forgiven and our thoughts will become pure one day. That motivates me more to fight with my wickedness.

I don’t understand what that means: “his good deeds are saturated with the poison of sin”. I agree that our souls are damaged. We can’t help sinning and we cannot get rid of this on our own, without the grace of God. But even if you know it, it’s very difficult to humble yourself genuinely, not to judge people and not to take offense at them.

Probably I would agree with Abbot Nikon Vorobiev. Only after we have fallen can we rise with the help of God, of course.
Only after committing very serious sins can we truly assimilate the idea of our sinful nature. It becomes easier to be humble when we are stricken by pricks of conscience.
From my own experience, I can say that after committing something really bad and serious, I become to understand that I have no right to judge anyone for their sins because I am capable of committing the same.
And because of our sinfulness we are unlikely to do good and without being proud of our good deeds or without anticipating something good in return.
That's why it's better to do good and without considering it as something special. Let the Lord reward you according to your deeds.
