Interview one of your parents or some other senior about their work. Then write an essay or translate the whole interview into English.
You might want to pose some of the following questions. -
Do you have an opposite number or a counterpart?
Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?
Is there a pecking order for anything where you work?
Have you ever done a job-share with anyone? Was it a success?
Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?
Do you ever talk shop outside of work? Why (not)?
Do you often have to meet a deadline or work to very tight schedules?
Do you normally have a heavy workload?
Are there opportunities to volunteer for anything? Do you often take them?
Have you ever worked shifts or worked irregular and anti-social hours?
Have you ever been self-employed or freelance?
Can you say you are stuck behind a desk, stuck in a rut or have a dead-end job?
Which of the adjectives apply to your job: mundane, rewarding, stimulating, mechanical, repetitive, monotonous, varied, satisfying, challenging, glamorous, mind-numbing?
Would you like to change your job?

Describe a job using as many words from the unit as possible. Let your classmates guess what job it is.

- Good afternoon! I would like to know more about your previous job. May I ask you some questions? It won’t take long.
- Of course! I’m ready. I’d love to share with you my experience.
- Great! Did you have an OPPOSITE NUMBER or a COUNTERPART?
- Naturally, every one of us had a COUNTERPART as we did SHIFT-WORK. It was vital to maintain a good WORKING RELATIONSHIP to show an example to the kids, so I quickly established a good RAPPORT with everyone.
- Was there a PECKING ORDER for anything where you work?
- I wouldn’t say so. Our positions depended on the level of education. Thus, if you don’t have any skills in pedagogy, you can’t work with children but only be some kind of helper.
- Have you ever done a JOB-SHARE with anyone? Was it a success?
- Not really, but for our work it was necessary to COLLABORATE with psychologists, speech therapists and musicians to organise different concerts.
- Did you ever TALK SHOP outside of work? Why (not)?
- Yes, it is more than just MECHANICAL work, you should put a little part of yourself into it. It was absolutely impossible not to retell funny stories which I was a witness of during the day.
- Do you often have to MEET A DEADLINE or work to very TIGHT SCHEDULES?
- Every day I had to prepare for the following day. For example, find some songs, short poems, games, activities, pictures to draw. Sometimes it was really CHALLENGING but it helped me not to BE STUCK IN A RUT.
- What adjectives apply to your job?
- I would say that it wasn’t at all REPETITIVE or MIND-NUMBING as you never know what will happen next minute, it’s hard to predict. Previously I worked as an accountant. Having changed my job, I was surprised that my profession can be so VARIED. Surely, it was REWARDING and STIMULATING because I saw the results of my efforts in the absolute love and attachment that children showed in the end.
- Would you like to change your job?
- Unfortunately, I must admit that I had to take responsibility for all the kids and finally I decided to quit my profession.

Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?

I liked this question because I have a story related to this issue.

For more than a year I have been working as a waitress in a Moscow bar. I am inspired by communication with people and the fact that I can earn by myself, but this is not about that now.

In October last year we met with an old friend with whom we have known each other for almost 6 years and sometimes communicate well. It was a wonderful warm autumn day. We started talking about how nice it would be to find a job. Then she offered me a job at a bar she had recently joined. I was very scared because I had never worked seriously anywhere before.  But I decided to try, because I was sure that I would just work for a couple of months to earn money for Christmas gifts. But everything went differently... much better! Now I can't imagine my life without pocket money and work.

I am very glad that I work with friendly people and good colleagues. Outside of work, I communicate well with my workmates, and at work we create an excellent collaboration.

Do you often have to meet a deadline or work to very tight schedules? Do you normally have a heavy workload?

Often I have to do a lot of things in a short time and take the initiative into my own hands. It's quite difficult, because I don't have time to rest. But it is never mind-numbing and it's really satisfying for me.

Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?

- I have been working as a barista for almost a year and I adore my colleagues. We have a great team where everyone is diligent, active and friendly. We have a good WORKING RELATIONSHIP. We spend a lot of time together at work, but sometimes we get together off work to have some rest and to chat about personal things.

Do you ever talk shop outside of work? Why (not)?

- The point is that all my WORKMATES, the same as me, enjoy our job. We are united by our love of people and communicating with them. We have a lot of guests in our coffee house and when my colleagues and I socialise outside of work, we frequently tell each other various stories about our guests or share our impressions about the last shift.

Do you normally have a heavy workload?

- Not all the time. It is a matter of many factors, but primarily WORKLOAD depends on the flow of guests.

Which of the adjectives apply to your job?

- Being a barista can be considered MONOTONOUS, the process of making drinks is indeed REPETITIVE, but I enjoy what I do, so I guess I would pick up the adjectives: REWARDING and SATISFYING.

Would you like to change your job?

- At the moment I don't want to change job. I am happy with everything. But frankly, I've always wanted to open my own place, and I think my current job will give me the experience I need!

Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?

I work at school, so my colleagues are very educated and well-mannered people. We have good working relationships. At the same time teachers in our school are divided into fractions according to their specialization. English teachers, Literature teachers, physicists, mathematicians, chemists and so on. Teachers of these fractions usually have a lot of day-to-day collaborations and are often good counterparts.

Do you ever talk shop outside of work? Why (not)?

If I meet my colleagues out of our work space, we talk mostly about work, as, as I already have said, my relationships with them are just working relationships. Of course, we can talk about children, health or weather, but this is just small talks.

Do you often have to meet a deadline or work to very tight schedules?

I have to meet the deadlines when some events are coming - the nearest one is New Year, and my colleagues and I shall make a program and prepare a festive evening. Volunteers are absent, so I feel that I am to take the initiative. However, on the one hand, it can happen to be quite rewarding if I organize it, as I am a creative person and is able to do things like that well. On the other hand, it's quite challenging to stimulate people to do something besides their work within the great workload at the end of the year.

Do you normally have a heavy workload?

It depends on the time of the working year. At the beginning of the year we prepare for new classes and events, renew the documentation and so on. However, it is usually being done quite easily as we are full of energy after the holiday. The downside is the end of the calendar and working year, when all the tasks you have missed emerges to be done, and you have to cope with the stress, meeting the deadlines.

Jakob often felt himself to be a person of hyperbolical responsibility. He often had to take the responsibility for things, because his surrounding would avoid it. That is why he always lived in a workload. Also, because of his diffidence, he couldn't even ask for help. However, people loved him because of his creativity, so that after he has motivated and stimulated people, they start helping him in bearing his responsibility.

I have been working as a FREELANCER for almost two years. And the main advantage is that I’m not STUCK BEHIND A DESK. However, I have to work to very TIGHT SCHEDULES, because I have to complete all the tasks given to me by management within a certain deadline. Sometimes it seems to me that my job is CHALLENGING but still I am happy with it.

- Hello! I would like to ask you some questions about your current work. Do you have some time for this?
- Yes, sure.
- Could you leave out the name of the job so readers can guess it?
- Oh, that sounds interesting, so let's start.
- Do you have an opposite number or a counterpart?
- Yes, I do. In the place where I work, I have as many as ten counterparts, but we work in pairs. We also have assistants who help with our clients, because all of them need a special treatment.
- Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?
- Well, we're pretty informal with each other and often have tea parties. We are all workmates. However, since I used to hold a managerial position, my colleagues are a little shy of me.
- Is there a pecking order for anything where you work?
- No, there is no pecking order, because our place is not hierarchical at all.
- Have you ever done a job-share with anyone? Was it a success?
- Yes, I do it with one of my colleague. It was very successful, because I helped her with the paperwork while she babysat our special clients.
- Which of the adjectives apply to your job: mundane, rewarding, stimulating, mechanical, repetitive, monotonous, varied, satisfying, challenging, glamorous, mind-numbing?
- Oh, well...Let me think a minute. I would describe my work like this: it is in some cases very tiresome, but most of the time it's varied and challenging of course, because we work with a certain group of people who need attention all the time. And I would like to say that it is rewarding because our clients, after they leave our place, always have warm and cozy memories of me and my colleagues and the place where they spent four years.
- Thank you very much for your time, mom. Have a nice day!

Have you ever been self-employed or freelance?

Yes, I have been a tutor of English. I liked it, it was quite CHALLENGING, because I had to TAKE THE INITIATIVE to make our lessons productive and exciting. Although there was a special approach to every pupil, nevertheless all of them wanted their lessons to be not MUNDANE, MONOTONOUS and MIND-NUMBING, but STIMULATING, helpful and REWARDING. So I had to make up different fun exercises, presentations, bonuses in order to reward a hardworking child.
I think that my purpose was not just to explain new material, but make them like the English language and new knowledge.

Thus, I liked tutoring, children made me joyful, sometimes it was so fun to teach them and talk to them.

She is so tired after the DAY-SHIFT. She has a heavy WORKLOAD and TIGHT SCHEDULES. She wished she could be FREELANCE.

Do you have an opposite number or a counterpart?

Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?

- Well, I would say that we have some kind of factions. But it is, how am I to put it, quite natural according to how we all are selected here.

Is there a pecking order for anything where you work?

- Yes, there is. And it may sometimes lead to conflicts or rivalry. Yeh, sadly we are not as nice and sweet as people see us.

Do you ever talk shop outside of work? Why (not)?

- For sure. We are practising talking shop all the time. I wouldn't have it any other way. I guess, that it is how it works with all artistic professions. I indeed live this job.

Do you normally have a heavy workload?

- Absolutely. Sometimes I get tired physically so much that the only thing I can do is to lie down. Words “overworked and unrepaired” have their literal meaning from time to time.

Would you like to change your job?

- Never. The sphere in which I work is considered to be art. I can’t imagine myself without it.

----------------------------------------
I hate doing MUNDANE tasks, but I have to. My job is very MONOTONOUS and NOT SATISFYING at all. I want to quit it and become SELF-EMPLOYED to FREELANCE and do what I enjoy. Who knows, may be I would form my own START-UP and one day would have a GLAMOROUS job.

Is there a pecking order for anything where you work?

- Yes, of course. In addition to the division into special departments, we have managers, head teachers, our director.

Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?

-
Yes. We often talked to one of my colleagues after work. Basically, we were united by religious themes. We even started going to the same temple.

Do you normally have a heavy workload?

- I have 60 hours a week. That's a lot for me.

Are there opportunities to volunteer for anything?

- Unfortunately, I didn't have such an opportunity, but I would really like to help in orphanages.

Have you ever worked shifts or worked irregular and anti-social hours?

- No. I have been working in one place for twenty years and my schedule has not changed.

Have you ever been self-employed or freelance?

- Yes, sometimes I come to people's homes for special lessons.

Which of the adjectives apply to your job: varied, satisfying, challenging

Would you like to change your job?

- No, I wouldn't want to. I really love working with children, because every hour a new universe appears in front of me with its own problems and questions, and I have the opportunity not only to teach this little person something new, but also to look at the world through this new prism.

Maybe this is what your WORKMATES mixed up. The style is MONOTONOUS! He must be FREELANCING. Are you usually SELF- EMPLOYED? I used to win awards for VOLUNTEER work.

Today I am going to tell you about my father's job. Neither has he any OPPOSITE NUMBER, nor has he ever done a JOB-SHARE,  that is, he is a sole worker. He has very good RAPPORT with everyone and there are not any FACTIONS or CLIQUES at his work. There's no PECKING ORDER. Everything is well structured and organised. Everybody is on equal terms. Never does he SOCIALISE with his WORKMATES outside of work. Hardly ever does he TALK SHOP outside of work. The reason for it is the opportunity to spend this time with beloved ones. Every object has its strict term of fulfilment that's why he often needs to MEET DEADLINES and WORK TO A VERY TIGHT SCHEDULE with his colleagues. Normally he has a heavy WORKLOAD and he says that he would BE STUCK IN A RUT. Luckily, his job isn't a DEAD-END one. There aren't any opportunities to VOLUNTEER FOR anything for now but my father is an active person and he is an avid volunteer. He likes suggesting brand-new and absorbing projects.

He has never WORKED SHIFTS, thank God. His schedule is neither ANTI-SOCIAl, nor IRREGULAR. It's normal. Moreover, he has never been SELF-EMPLOYED or FREELANCE. His work is sometimes MUNDANE, MECHANICAL and REPETITIVE. That's is why my father has half a mind of changing it and doing something more CHALLENGING and interesting for him. He says that he is in a comfort zone now but he wants to get out of his bubble one day. In general he is satisfied with his job as it is rather VARIED and he feels like doing it.

Do you often have to meet a deadline or work to very tight schedules?

Meeting a DEADLINE is always a priority, regardless of whether you are on the DAY SHIFT or the NIGHT SHIFT. In some industries, the NIGHT SHIFT can be seen as less GLAMOROUS or even DEAD-END, but in reality, it can offer a unique set of challenges and opportunities. There may be a different PECKING ORDER or HIERARCHY in place on the NIGHT SHIFT, and it can be satisfying to take on new responsibilities and prove your worth. Whether your WORKLOAD is heavy or light, it is important to stay focused and motivated. CHALLENGING yourself to think outside the box and find new ways to approach your work can help you avoid getting STUCK IN A RUT. With the right attitude and approach, even the most mundane tasks can be transformed into opportunities for growth and learning.

5

-----------------------------------------

Sentences with words:

In my experience, having a heavy WORKLOAD can be both mundane and challenging, depending on the nature of the tasks involved. On the one hand, tasks that are MECHANICAL and REPETITIVE can quickly become MONOTONOUS and unsatisfying, especially if they must be completed on TIGHT SCHEDULES. On the other hand, tasks that are OPEN-MINDED ended and require problem-solving skills can be REWARDING and SATISFYING, even if they are CHALLENGING. When working with others, it is important to establish a good WORKING RELATIONSHIP and build RAPPORT with your WORKMATES. COLLABORATION with a COUNTERPART or OPPOSITE NUMBER can help to break down HIERARCHICAL barriers and create a more open-minded and egalitarian environment. It is also important to TAKE THE INITIATIVE and TALK SHOP with your colleagues, even if you are on different shifts or work in different areas of the organization.

Me: Mom, can you tell me about your job as a physiotherapist?
Mother: Sure, honey. It's a challenging but rewarding career. I work with patients to improve their mobility and alleviate pain.
Me: That sounds stimulating. How is your workload?
Mother: It can be intense at times, especially with tight schedules, but I manage it with good collaboration with my colleagues.
Me: Do you volunteer in any capacity?
Mother: Yes, I occasionally volunteer at community events to promote good health practices.
Me: That's great. How do you establish a good rapport with your patients?
Mother: I spend time with them, listen to their concerns, and make them feel comfortable. It's satisfying to see them progress and regain their mobility.
Me: It seems like a satisfying job, but is it glamorous?
Mother: Not really, it's not a glamorous job, but the fulfillment I get from helping others is worth it.

I have two friends, Alexey and Sasha. Alexey was a FREELANCE programmer, WORKING FROM HOME, while Sasha was a TECHNICIAN at a START-UP. Their WORKING CONDITIONS were quite different. Alex enjoyed the freedom of being SELF-EMPLOYED, but the WORKLOAD was irregular and often MIND-NUMBINGLY TEDIOUS. On the other hand, Sasha's job was STIMULATING and CHALLENGING, but the TIGHT SCHEDULES and HIERARCHICAL PECKING ORDER could be frustrating.

Despite their different working conditions, they always found time to TALK SHOP and discuss their respective WORKMATES. Alex envied Sasha's COLLABORATION and working relationship with her colleagues, while Sasha was envious of Alex's ANTI-SOCIAL working conditions and the ability to TAKE THE INITIATIVE. However, they both agreed that their jobs had their respective pros and cons.

One day, Sasha's start-up was looking for VOLUNTEERS to work on a special project with a TIGHT DEADLINE. She suggested Alex as her COUNTERPART for the project, and they were both delighted when their bosses agreed. They started collaborating closely, and their RAPPORT quickly developed into a strong working relationship. Alex's programming SKILLS proved to be a perfect match for Sasha's technician expertise.

Working together, they shared their expertise and found innovative solutions to the project's challenges. They HOT-DESKED at the start-up, which allowed them to break away from their respective DEAD-END routines. Alex found the day shift a refreshing change from his NIGHT SHIFT, while Sasha enjoyed the GLAMOR of working on something out of the ordinary.

The experience was a welcome break from their MONOTONOUS routines, and they both felt they had broken free from being STUCK IN A RUT. As they successfully met the deadline, they both knew that their stimulating COLLABORATION was something they would cherish for a long time.

Working as a freelance IT professional can be described by a diverse range of adjectives, each capturing a different facet of the profession. The applicability of these adjectives varies depending on the specific project, client, and individual preferences.

Firstly, the term "stimulating" aptly characterizes the freelance IT role. However, the stimulating aspect often comes bundled with its counterpart, "challenging." Some aspects of freelance IT work can be "repetitive" and "mechanical." Routine tasks like software updates, system maintenance, and troubleshooting can become monotonous over time, particularly in long-term projects.

The term "varied" comes into play when considering the diverse range of projects a freelance IT professional may undertake. One day, they could be developing a web application, while the next, they might be configuring network security. This variety keeps the job from becoming too monotonous and adds an element of excitement.

"Satisfying" is an adjective that resonates with many in the IT field. Successfully completing a project, resolving a critical issue, or delivering a robust solution can provide immense satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. "Glamorous" is an adjective less commonly associated with freelance IT work. While the tech industry can be seen as glamorous due to high-profile companies and innovations, the day-to-day tasks of an IT freelancer often involve more behind-the-scenes work, focusing on functionality rather than fame.

Lastly, "mundane" and "mind-numbing" might describe certain administrative tasks or paperwork associated with freelance work, such as invoicing or documentation. These aspects can be a necessary but less exciting part of the job.

I interviewed my Dad who is a programmer. He works at home and I have always thought that his job is monotonous and unsatisfying, but this interview has really surprised me

—Dad, could you please answer some of my questions about your job for my university essay?
—Sure, I would like to try.
—Okay, my first question for you is: Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?
—Yes, I have good working relationship with almost all individuals I have to work with and our company is divided into different departments, but still I have a good rapport with all the staff I personally know.
—Thank you very much for answering. The second question I am interested in is... Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?
—No, I do not have friends from work except my friend Sasha who was my workmate from my previous work.
—You are a kind of introvert, I see. So, what can you say about talking shop outside of work? Why (not)?
—Well, sometimes. I do this for keeping good relations with colleagues and discuss some important projects.
—Okay, thank you. And do you normally have a heavy workload?
—Basically I have normal workload, but rarely I have to work irregular and anti-social hours when I have some technical problems.
—Good to hear that, Dad! Have you ever thought about being self-employed or freelancer?
—Yes, I even have a successful experience in freelance, but due to some circumstances I had to get another job.
—Interesting! And my last question to you. You sit before the computer a lot and and it seems to me that your job is very monotonous... Which of the adjectives apply to your job: mundane, rewarding, stimulating, mechanical, repetitive, monotonous, varied, satisfying, challenging, glamorous, mind-numbing?
—My job is very interesting to me and I don't want to change it. I can describe my job as rewarding, satisfying and varied.
—Thank you very much for sharing your experience with me!

_____ (доб. 17.05.24)
1) When I have to do MECHANICAL and REPETITIVE work, I often turn the lo-fi music on. 2) I would call myself SELF-EMPLOYED having my private students.
3) These days I have to MEET A LOT OF DEADLINES. 4) It's not SATISFYING experience at all. 5) It's not REWARDING at all because you get no pleasure from it. 6) Also, a heavy WORKLOAD is bad for your mental state.
