Interview one of your parents or some other senior about their work. Then write an essay or translate the whole interview into English.
You might want to pose some of the following questions. -
Do you have an opposite number or a counterpart?
Do you have good working relationship or rapport with everyone, or maybe your colleagues are divided into factions and cliques?
Is there a pecking order for anything where you work?
Have you ever done a job-share with anyone? Was it a success?
Do you socialise with any of your workmates outside of work?
Do you ever talk shop outside of work? Why (not)?
Do you often have to meet a deadline or work to very tight schedules?
Do you normally have a heavy workload?
Are there opportunities to volunteer for anything? Do you often take them?
Have you ever worked shifts or worked irregular and anti-social hours?
Have you ever been self-employed or freelance?
Can you say you are stuck behind a desk, stuck in a rut or have a dead-end job?
Which of the adjectives apply to your job: mundane, rewarding, stimulating, mechanical, repetitive, monotonous, varied, satisfying, challenging, glamorous, mind-numbing?
Would you like to change your job?

Describe a job using as many words from the unit as possible. Let your classmates guess what job it is.

Would you like to change your job?

Right now I work for a big company. I am a copywriter. At work we have a good working relationship, outside of work we don't talk shop, which is important for me.
My tasks are usually not mundane, but very creative! When I write, I have to meet a deadline. Sometimes I am stuck behind a desk, but it's not mind-numbing.
I have a heavy workload, but I managed to combine it with my studies. I am not stuck in a rut, I am totally fine with my work and I don't want to change it!

1. Homer has a pretty GLAMOROUS and SATISFYING job, even it is MECHANICAL and REPETITIVE sometimes. 2. His tasks aren't MUNDANE or MIND-NUMBING and he doesn't think about KNOCKING OFF. 3. Homer's job is REWARDING and STIMULATING, but sometimes a bit CHALLENGING. 4. Homer never TALKS SHOP with his WORKMATES. 5. Homer prefers working DAY SHIFT. 6. Homer feels sorry for people who are STUCK IN A RUT or who are in DEAD-END jobs. 7. Homer advises me to find a MONOTONOUS work with a good WORKING RELATIONSHIP, and establish a good RAPPORT with everyone.

Have you ever been self-employed or freelance?

I worked for an advertising and promotion company last summer, but I did my job online as a self-employed person. I didn't have to go to the office every morning, which saved me a lot of time. But it also had its drawbacks, as I myself had to plan my day and a list of tasks that I would complete today. This kind of work disciplines you and develops responsibility to yourself and not to your boss.

But to be honest, I would not like to repeat this experience, since I realized that I am a team player, it is important for me to meet people every day and leave the house. It affects my psychological and physical health.

WORKING RELATIONSHIP is an important thing when you work at an office. Even if your tasks seem to be MUNDANE, having colleagues that are your good friends is vital to stay productive. Nevertheless, MONOTONOUS work will not be SATISFYING, so you will have to leave this company but you may keep in touch with ex-colleagues.
