What, in your opinion, are the advantages and disadvantages of free medicine? Of commercial medicine?

What is the principal difference between the traditional and the alternative medicine?

What is your view of alternative medicine? Have you ever been to a specialist who practises some kind of alternating medicine? What has been your experience and the outcome?

What are the strong and the weak points of Russian healthcare system? What are the challenges it faces?

What do you do to "keep the doctor away"?

Which doctor treated you when you were ill last? Why did you consult the doctor? Did you go to the clinic or did you call the doctor in? Why was it necessary for you to see a doctor? What were your symptoms? What did the doctor say? How long were you ill? Did you take a holiday after you recovered?

When did you see the dentist last? What was the matter with you? What did the dentist say? What did the dentist do? Was it painful?

What would you do if you fell ill? Would you follow the doctor's recommendations if he advised you to stay in bed for a couple of days? Who would take care of you if you were very seriously ill?

Have you ever had any operations?

Are you allergic to anything?

If you have had coronavirus, describe the way it developed and the way you recovered from it.

Describe the way someone attended to you when you were ill.

Describe your experience of being at hospital.

I attended my dentist last November. My first wisdom tooth had decided to show up, but it had not been growing well and could not even get through the gums. So I was considering whether I should pull it out or not. The dentist said that there is no need to extract it right now and just helped it to get through the gums. But, unfortunately, it appeared that my several teeth have caries... So there is enough dental work to be done. I guess this is the price for having a sweet tooth. But I trust the dentist as he is a kind of GP, as he also works with the other members of my family. And he is rather careful and conscientious. So the only painful thing I have to deal with is the bill, but it has never been cheap to have your teeth attended to.

What do you do to "keep the doctor away"?

As many people do, I don't like seeing doctors. That's why I have some rules and methods to reinforce my immune system. First of all, I drink a glass of warm water after waking up. Water should be warm so that your stomach could feel good. I drink enough water all day long. It helps your organism to function and supports your brain as well. I do some physical exercises. I'm not a sportsman at all, but I think 30 minutes of yoga session or 40 minutes of swimming per day is good for your organism. I also try to walk every day, which is pretty hard because of studying and working via the Internet. Nevertheless, the hardest part of my rules is nutrition. I reduced the amount of sugar and unhealthy food, but I can't fully get rid of it. I'm working on it now and hope for the best results.

Are you allergic to anything?

It's a hard question for me because I'm not sure what exactly I'm allergic to. I only know that some of the citrus fruits can be dangerous for me. But it doesn't depend on the kind of fruit or season. Once I ate 11 tangerines per day and felt good, the other time I tried half of the tangerine and was delivered to the hospital with red itchy spots on my body. I believe it's connected not with the citrus fruits, but with the chemicals that are used to grow them. I love tangerines and oranges and eat them every winter, but sometimes I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette.

My coronavirus story starts with my family. It was last year when my younger siblings got sick. Their illness passed in a mild form. They had only a low temperature for a couple of days and weakness. Then my brother and I got sick. We had the same symptoms as our younger siblings. Firstly I couldn’t feel any smells or tastes, but it came back when I started taking arbidol pills. Everything seemed to go well, but then our parents got sick. They had a very hard time. They didn't get out of bed for several days, so my brother and I had to look after our animals. Primary care was provided by the doctor during a home visit. Soon after Easter they began to recover.

I don't see the advantages and disadvantages of free medicine at all.  In my opinion, free medicine is positioned as bad, and paid as expensive. But I suppose that medicine is a chance for life and every person should have this chance, regardless of their financial situation or status. Of course, some serious illnesses require serious examinations and medications. But it's very sad when money is made on people's lives.

In our country, HEALTHCARE allows anyone who needs PRIMARY CARE to receive it. If you have an ACUTE CONDITION or a CHRONIC CONDITION then a PHYSICIAN or a LOCUM will definitely help you. But if you need SECONDARY CARE then you will be REFERRED TO a specialist who specialises in a particular ORGAN or a specific age group. OPHTHALMOLOGISTS treat the eyes. CARDIOLOGISTS are responsible for heart health. GYNAECOLOGISTS and OBSTETRICIANS are responsible for the healthy birth of the nation. PAEDIATRICIANS closely monitor the health of children. DERMATOLOGISTS treat the skin. ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS stop the pain.

There are different opinions on the topic of national insurance. Here in Russia we have it, but I personally, as well as many others, almost never visit the general practitioner at my clinic. But everyone pays their taxes, whether they use the provided service or not. I’m not even talking about the fact that only part of that money goes to the National Health Service. And you don’t even get the medications, you still have to buy them at a pharmacy. On the other hand, in countries like the USA there is no such thing as national insurance, there you have to always pay for everything, and it is quite expensive. So, different approaches to national healthcare have their pros and cons.

Have you ever had any operations?

I’m very lucky in the sense that I’ve never been seriously ill. Of course, I’ve had my fair share of flu bouts and such and I’ve visited different doctors on various occasions, but I’ve never had to spend in hospital even a night. But I have had an operation. One day, as I was playing with my siblings, I fell and hit my head. It didn’t hurt that much. But when I touched it with my hand and looked at my fingers, I saw blood. I quickly called my parents and my father took me to hospital where a surgeon put a couple of stiches in my head. That was rather quick and I wasn’t afraid or anything. And when I came home, I was given a large carton of ice-cream with chocolate. So, all in all, the day ended on a good note.

5

There were four of us -- George, and William, and Montmorency, and myself. We were sitting in my room, smoking, and talking about how bad we were -- bad from a medical point of view I mean, of course.

“I needed PRIMARY CARE,” said George. “I needed to see my PHYSICIAN, preferably during a HOME VISIT. But Dr. Richards was ill with some acute CONDITION and I had to put up with a LOCUM instead.”

“I certainly had it worse, my dear chap, what with my CHRONIC CONDITION and all,” answered William. “Only SECONDARY CARE for me. I’ve been referred to so many specialists by now and no one seems to know which ORGAN I should blame for my suffering. I’ve been to an OPHTHALMOLOGIST with my eyes, and to a CARDIOLOGIST with my heart. I’ve even been to a GYNAECOLOGIST, an OBSTETRICIAN and a PAEDIATRICIAN, though they, for some reason, were angry with me for bothering them, said something about me being a grown-up and a man on top of that, very strange. It makes me so stressed that now I also need to see a PSYCHIATRIST and a DERMATOLOGIST.”

“Both of you should try ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE,” interjected Montmorency (all of us looked at him in surprise as for some reason he had been hiding his ability to speak from us.) “Or, as I prefer to call it, COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE. You could see an ACUPUNCTURIST or a CHIROPRACTOR. There are also HOMEOPATHIC DOCTORS, as well as AROMATHERAPISTS.”

“I don’t know what we would do without the NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE, but, I suppose, sometimes we have no other choice but to GO PRIVATE,” I concluded.

Are you allergic to anything?

Unfortunately yes, I'm allergic to a lot of things. To begin with, it's pollinosis, that is, an allergy to pollen: birch, oak, alder and probably something else, I don't know for sure. Allergies begin in the spring. Many people have to go somewhere during the height of allergies to survive. Every year is different, one year I couldn't leave the house for several weeks. In addition, a few years ago I became allergic to fruits from seeds, to fish and some vegetables. For example, I can't eat apples, plums, peaches, apricots, cherries, and so on. My throat is swollen and itchy. But it seems to me that such an allergy is not the worst thing.

5

Have you ever had any operations?

Unfortunately, yes. A year and a half ago I had a surgery on my ankle, they sewed up a torn ligament. I walked with a torn ligament for a year and a half, but none of the doctors could understand what it was. The MRI didn't show anything for some reason. I had an operation in a private clinic, everything went well, but there were complications after anesthesia.

5

Liza  is very concerned about medicine. She has a great NATIONAL INSURANCE and her own FAMILY DOCTOR.  As soon as her child gets sick, she immediately calls PRIMARY CARE and  visits PHYSICIANS. Sometimes she asks the doctor for a HOME VISIT. She visits doctors whether it is for an ACUTE CONDITION or a CHRONIC CONDITION. If there is something specific she goes to SECONDARY CARE. Sometimes she GOES PRIVATE,  there are many specialists like OPHTHALMOLOGISTS, CARDIOLOGISTS, PSYCHIATRISTS, PAEDIATRICIANS. Liza likes ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE but her friends are keen on COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE, on HOMEOPATHY.

What is your view of alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine is quite a controversial issue in the modern world. Rapid scientific development contributes to humans' conviction that acupuncture and herbal
tinctures are a fraud. However, I think, it`s not that simple.
On the one hand, the connection between complementary medicine and scammers is pretty solid. Modern people tend to laugh at those who genuinely believe that they'll cure cancer with some magnets, massage and herbs. And I can understand that.
However, I can also understand those who visit chiropractors and homeopathic doctors. The point is that those people believe that they'll get cured and our belief might be the most powerful thing in the world. I assume that the success of one`s treatment mostly depends on their will to get well and their belief that it's possible.
There are a lot of people who got through hell this way. So, I think that alternative medicine has a right to exist.
However, I still think that it`s important to be reasonable and to seek professional medical help in case of both acute and chronic conditions at first at hospital.

5

I have to visit my PSYCHIATRIST due to my anxiety from time to time. And my girlfriend has to visit a DERMATOLOGIST a lot because she has a CHRONIC CONDITION. She tried to consult HOMEOPATHIC DOCTORS but that didn't help, so she decided that COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE isn't for her. Despite the fact that we have free HEALTHCARE in Russia, many people choose to GO PRIVATE in many cases, because specialists that they`re REFERRED TO (i.e. CARDIOLOGISTS, GYNAECOLOGISTS, OBSTETRICIANS) are either unavailable due to a huge amount of patients or they're quite unprofessional.

My close friend works at veterinary CLINIC which offers both PRIMARY CARE and SECONDARY CARE for pets. Also they have SURGERY but this is common for any good veterinary hospital. All the medications go with PRESCRIPTION CHARGES, but there is no NATIONAL INSURANCE for your pets, so you can only ‘GO PRIVATE’. But as a famous quotations saying: “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” So we must help our pets when they are in an ACUTE CONDITION.

This question is much deeper than it seems to be. Personally, I don’t take acupuncture, chiropractic or anything like that seriously, let alone so-called “energy therapies”. But though they might not have actual proven health benefit, they may still help some people. Because the placebo effect actually works. Which is more, and it may sound a bit paradoxical, the placebo effect works even if a person knows that they were given placebo treatment. But you must not come to extreme with these kinds of medical practices. They may serve you well as kind of “maintenance therapy”, but the primary treatment should be given to you by a certified medic. I’ve heard some stories of people trying to cure life-threatening diseases using alternative medicine, because they are too superstitious or distrustful of doctors. I don’t think I need to tell you, that it’s a bad idea.

Are you allergic to anything?

I'm allergic to milk. Milk intolerance started when I was 16 years old. This is a psychosomatic disease, so allergy pills do not help. Therefore, dairy products are not allowed to me at all. When the allergy first started, I was examined by many doctors, but no one could solve my problem. I had allergy tests, but they didn't show anything. I even kept a food diary, which recorded every food I ate during the day. In the end, the head of the allergy department threw up his hands and said he couldn't help me.

5

DERMATOLOGISTS would be happy to see this.
I'm employed by a private HEALTHCARE company.
I know there's been a major crash on the NHS system.
We need to get this man to the CLINIC.
She's been my FAMILY DOCTOR for years.
I've got a new passport and a NATIONAL INSURANCE number.
Check his cervical SPINE.
Do you know what the ACUPUNCTURIST did?
Get a CARDIOLOGIST down here.
I've been studying ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE for two years now.

[Full stops!!]

If we want to be strong and healthy, we should lead a healthy lifestyle. I think that these are some important keys how to be healthy:
-do sports regularly, be active;
-try to walk and breathe fresh air;
-eat vegetables and fruit;
-drink water;
-don’t go to bed late.

There are a lot of PHYSICIANS in our CLINIC: CARDIOLOGISTS, OPHTHALMOLOGISTS, DERMATOLOGISTS, PAEDIATRICIANS, AROMATHERAPISTS, CHIROPRACTORS and even ACUPUNCTURISTS.
A LOCUM will have a HOME VISIT today.

What is the principal difference between the traditional and the alternative medicine?

If, talking about the alternative medicine we mean homeopathy, acupuncture or aromatherapy, and talking about traditional medicine - physicians and other doctors working in surgeries, clinics or other health departments - governmental or private - then, of course, there are few significant differences that make the methods of these two forms of medicine fundamentally different.

Usually traditional medicine starts with a physician - a doctor of general practice who performs an examination and defines the health problem. Then that doctor refers a patient to a specialist, who is to solve the problem and cure the disease. When eyes are ill you are to be sent to an ophthalmologist, when the heart - to a cardiologist, when the skin - to a dermatologist, when the mind, mood or spirit - to a psychiatrist.

In such an approach a person is considered as if fragmentary, and different organs are being treated separately. With such an approach we forget that a person is a complicated system, where organs and liquids are interconnected, depend on each other's condition and affect each other.

And here the fundamental difference between the traditional and the alternative medicine is hidden. The latter considers a person as a single system where every organ influences all the others. So the reason of a sore throat can be hidden in curvature of the cervical vertebrae, and the reason of a stomach ache - in nervousness and self-doubt.

Describe the way someone attended to you when you were ill.

At the beginning of the 11th grade, I fell ill with purulent angina. It all started with a common cold and dragged on for a month. During a cold, complications began, my parents called a doctor, it turned out that I had a purulent angina. My throat was swollen, for this reason I could not eat anything but mashed potatoes. I remember that my mother constantly made me mashed potatoes, porridges, cream soups. Due to the fact that I could not eat normally, because it was very painful to swallow, I lost a lot of weight, and the temperature and constant injections of antibiotics did not add much strength to me, so I practically could not do anything on my own, for example, read a book, so my sister read to me or I just listened to audiobooks.

It seems to me that the care of close people is necessary for recovery. Their love, support, attempts to cheer give strength. I am very grateful to my family for this. In turn, when one of my loved people is sick, I try to take care of them.
