Describe your holiday on a campsite, if you ever had one. Where was it? How long did you stay? Did you pitch a tent or parked a caravan? Who cooked meals, and how? What did you do there? How was security ensured?

When you travel, do you prefer to stay in a hotel, a self-catering accommodation, a guesthouse, or a hostel? Why?

Have you ever had a package holiday? Was it worth it?

Have you ever been on a cruise?

Would you like to have an adventure holiday?

Have you ever had a ride up a winding mountain road? Was it terrifying? Did it prove to be worthwhile in the end?

What is the remotest place you have been to?

Describe a holiday you have had, using words from the unit.

Which would you prefer and why - a holiday in the centre of a historic city or one in a remote village with spectacular surrounding countryside?

What’s the most memorable holiday you’ve ever had?

Which would you say is the most impressive city you’ve visited?

What would you say is the most fascinating place you’ve been to?

Have you ever had a holiday experience you’d describe as terrifying?

Once, I had the opportunity to visit the Solovetsky Monastery on the White Sea. This place is quite REMOTE from Moscow, roughly 1,476 km away. My companions and I traveled by train, bus, and boat. This holiday is a MEMORABLE one for me. The nature was FASCINATING and the monastery complex was very IMPRESSIVE. I went on tours about the history of the monastery and the GULAG. We visited Zayachy Island, Anzer Island, Botanical Garden, Sekirnaya Mountain, Solovetsky labyrinths. We floated along the canals and saw a lot of crosses. This trip was educational and spiritual at the same time. I attended Vespers and Liturgy at the monastery and venerated the relics of Saint Zosima and Saint Savvati of Solovetsky, which are located in the Trinity Cathedral. I still think about the PICTURESQUE views of the White Sea, UNSPOILT forests and islands, and the churches. It was a UNIQUE opportunity to see firsthand one of the most BREATHTAKING and tragic places in our country, to dive into its history, and to feel its spiritual power.

This summer, I went camping with my family at a recreation base called "Les i Ryba" ("Forest and Fish") in the Astrakhan region, near the Akhtuba River. We stayed there for three weeks. We pitched two tents: a large one for the children and a smaller one for our parents. Our meals were cooked outdoors under a canopy, where we had a table, benches, and an induction stove. Sometimes my parents also used a cauldron over the campfire to prepare dinner.

Most of the time we spent by the river, swimming and resting in the shade. The campsite was safe, with a fence and guards on duty, so we didn’t have to worry about security. The weather was extremely hot, and life in tents was far from comfortable, but the trip was definitely unforgettable. It taught me how challenging outdoor life can be and made me appreciate comfort and cool air much more. (To be honest, I hate this trip)

When I was about 10, I went to a trip to Karelia with my family. We got there on car and PITCHED TENTS in the forest, on the shore of the Lake Ladoga and our second CAMPSITE was on the shore of the Lake Onega. We stayed there for maybe ten days. The children (including me) were helping to prepare food (peeling vegetables, cutting them etc.), and we were cooking food on the campfire. I was playing with my friend whom we took with us, walking on the shore, admiring the BREATHTAKING scenery of the lakes. I don't remember feeling unsafe there and I remember that even when later on we went to the Baltic Sea, our car got stuck at night in the forest, but we somehow met two border guards and they helped us.

My most memorable holidays were two camping trips to the Black Sea in Crimea. I went there twice, and both times we lived in tents just 50 meters from the shore. In fact, it was an interesting experience for me. I had only gone on a mini - camping trip before, and I had only stayed in a tent for one night. However, I had always been interested in camping. I can say that I was not disappointed.

The first time I went, it was a small, friendly group consisting of my brother's girlfriend and her mother. The second trip was a bigger event with my own mother, my brother, his girlfriend, and her whole family—her mom, dad, sister and Boni, their dog. Both times, we stayed for two weeks. First time we spent our holiday in Sudak and the second time was in the village of Shtormovoye.

Setting up our tents so close to the shore was the best decision. We spent most of our time swimming in the warm sea, sunbathing on the beach, playing games on the beach, and covering ourselves with therapeutic mud, which was good for our skin. For meals, we all cooked together on a portable gas stove. It was a team effort, and food always tasted amazing in the fresh air.

Looking back, it wasn't the safest trip. There weren't many other campers around. However, we always felt secure. The place was very quiet and peaceful, and most importantly, we were a large group. Being together made us feel safe and allowed us to enjoy a perfect, adventurous escape into nature.

My best holiday was a camping trip in a forest near a lake. We stayed for a week. My dad and I pitched a tent right under the trees. My mum was in charge of catering, she cooked simple but tasty meals on a portable stove. During the day, we went hiking and swimming. At night, we sat by the campfire. To ensure security, we always locked our valuables in the car and kept a flashlight nearby. It was a perfect getaway from it all.

Tourism in Russia is becoming increasingly popular among people of all ages. The STUNNING scenery of the Urals and Lake Baikal, and even the REMOTEST places in our country are finally being appreciated by people on  vacation.

Personally I believe the best kind of tourism is not LUXURIOUS and does not imply EXCLUSIVE places or GLAMOROUS hotels. Travelling means finding locations AS PRETTY AS A PICTURE with the UNSPOILT charm and occasional visits to UNIQUE facilities if there are any on location. This is the reason I want to someday take an EXHILARATING ride to an EXOTIC place in Russia. Some would call it an adventure holiday. I wouldn't mind mild INCONVENIENCES in order to enjoy EXCEPTIONAL views. A real adventure holiday happens on CAMPSITES with a TENT PITCHED by yourself, and when every leg of the journey is possibly TERRIFYING but worthwhile. An adventure holiday couldn't be farther apart from a PACKAGED one. Part of an adventure holiday is unveiling it as it goes on and not knowing where your next accommodation is going to be, and definitely not prepaying for any travel or EXCURSIONS in advance.

It's clear that an adventure holiday is not for everyone, yet it can become the most MEMORABLE holiday you have ever had.

С уважением, Онищенко Ксения

Would you like to have an adventure holiday?

Yes, the idea of an adventure holiday appeals to me. I want to avoid a typical PACKAGED holiday that feels too safe. I accept that there will be some
INCONVENIENCES along the way, but I think, you should remember, that the trade-off is the chance to see truly EXCEPTIONAL and untouched places.
I would aim for a REMOTE destination, not a popular resort. Staying at a simple CAMPSITE and learning to PITCH A TENT properly would be part of it. The planning would be minimal, because it leaves room for spontaneity.
Of course, parts of it could be TERRIFYING, like navigating an unknown trail or a sudden storm . But I believe such an experience would be very MEMORABLE. It

Yes and I liked it! Once my family and I were returning from Crimea riding along the serpentine, the SURROUNDING view was gorgeous! We were driving through the green mountains and also passed through the vineyards. We've been to Crimea several times, but this trip was the most MEMORABLE! Unfortunately, for my mom this way was TERRIFYING, so, she didn't enjoy it at all.

Severalyears ago, I had an experience of mountain hiking. It was a school trip to the
Caucasus. Our class teacher is very adventurous person and he likes going to
remote places to get away. I cannot say it was the most pleasant journey in my
life: we were just a little bit unlucky with the weather. Staying in a tent at
night during a thunderstorm in an open area and getting through a winding road
at high altitude was terrifying. But the experience definitely was memorable
and exceptional. We stayed in the mountains for two days, pitched tents, cooked
meals over the fire. The view of Caucasus mountains was stunning and
breathtaking. This exotic beauty was definitely worth the difficulties we met,
but to be honest, I wouldn’t have this experience again. Hiking is not for me.

What’s the most memorable holiday you’ve ever had?

The most MEMORABLE holiday in my life was a trip to Chuvashia when I was nine years old. It was a real GET AWAY from everyday life, felt both ADVENTUROUS and exciting. My mother was born in a small village there, so the trip was also an opportunity to get to know all my relatives from her side.

What made this vacation so UNIQUE was the warm atmosphere and strong sense of belonging. The landscape of Chuvashia was simply BREATHTAKING: the wide fields, rivers, and peaceful villages seemed almost magical to me as a child. Everything seemed new and FASCINATING.

One of my favorite memories was visiting a local amusement park. It was amazing and filled with laughter, bright lights and happy moments.  Every time I remember it, I realize that that vacation was not just a trip. Well, it was a special time filled with family, discoveries and joy that I will remember forever.
