EVU Upper-Intermediate

2nd year of study: Autumn 2021

Unit 42

There were two wise men in the room. One of them was a professor of Math. He said: “I HAVE NO DOUBTS THAT Math is the mother of science, and nothing can defeat its logic. Nothing can be OPPOSED TO Math!”. But another wise man was a professor of Theology. And he said: “Of course, you’re right, and Math explains a lot. But not everything, TO MY MIND. Math is powerless in Theology. Otherwise, how would you explain the fact that there are three hypostases in God Who is Consubstantial and Indivisible Trinity?”

Unit 42

His grandmother Lidia Vasilievna is an OBSESSIVE communist. She can’t reconcile herself with the fact that the USSR fell apart in 1991. Lidia Vasilievna BELIEVES that almost everything used to be better then, and she blames the new government for everything she would consider inconvenient. IF YOU ASK Lidia Vasilievna if she can suggest how to spend your free time, she will definitely suggest reading to Marx’s works, isn’t she ECCENTRIC?

Unit 9

This student is good at maths - he has A HEAD FOR FIGURES. Moreover, he has wonderful memory, not A HEAD LIKE A SIEVE. Although he is very clever, nonetheless he is neither A KNOW-ALL, nor A BIG-HEAD.

А.Я. [(2) 29,1]

Unit 1

The words we are learning must be memorized not IN ISOLATION, but in COLLOCATIONS. For remembering them one can group them in different ways - topic, WORD ROOT… Moreover, one should read a lot in order to have RICH VOCABULARY.

А.Я. [(2) 27,1]

Unit 49

My grandma is 78 years old and she is as fit as a fiddle.

Unit 35

Show me a person who has never heard anything about THE INTERNET. Is there still anyone in the whole world who hasn’t used WI-FI? You would be considered as a bizarre if you have not chatted ONLINE. Let’s face the ominous truth: we are addicted to THE NET and there is no way out.

А.М. [(2) 20,7]

Unit 35

I always use WIRELESS NETWORK at home. It works perfectly: I easily SERF THE WEB, using SEARCH ENGINE, read BLOGS and SITES I am SUBSCRIBED TO. In the cloud I STORE a CONTACT LIST and BOOKMARKS as it is easy to ACCESS them there. But what was my disappointment and despair when one day the SERVER was DOWN and I’ve lost all my data!

Unit 49

Jane was always full of different emotions, so that her mood could change as quickly as the weather. Now she might be IN HIGH SPIRITS, feeling ON CLOUD NINE, - just AS HAPPY AS YOU CAN IMAGINE. But a sudden thought, situation or something like that in the blink of an eye could change it. And now she is THROWING A WOBBLY, just LIKE A BEAR WITH A SORE HEAD. After such mood swings, she often feels DONE IN and A BIT UNDER THE WEATHER (sometimes she feels her HEAD even SPINNING). But after a short break she feels AS FIT AS A FIDDLE again.

М.Ч. [(2,5) 17,4]

Unit 49

Please tell me if you have noticed that yesterday Sara looked as if she had lost all zest for life. She HAD A LONG FACE and LOOKED DOWN IN THE DUMPS. It wouldn’t be so weird if it was normal for her to have a tinge of melancholy or to be in blues. But let’s call a spade a spade! Sara always tries to KEEP HER CHIN UP. And yesterday she was bleak and devastated. That won’t go, we must find out what has happened.

А.М. [(1,5) 16,2]

Unit 49

1. She FELT DONE IN, more than that she FELT HER HEAD SPINNING, because she WAS A BIT UNDER THE WEATHER.
2. He is very sportive, he FEELS AS FIT AS A FIDDLE, he IS ON TOP FORM.
3. Today is a wonderful day, I’m ON CLOUD ⛅️ NINE.

А.Я. [(2,5) 22,5]

Unit 8

1. If we talk about my family I can decidedly say that all its members are quite different from each other. My dad is an OPTIMISTIC EXTROVERT who loves being the focus of attention. 2. While my mother is an INTROVERT, she is TALENTED, BROAD-MINDED, but prefers to be alone with her thoughts. 3. And my sister… she can be IMPOLITE, RUDE AND DISCOURTEOUS sometimes, but deep down she is very SENSITIVE and trusting person.

Units 19

ART is one of the most mysterious and unusual phenomena. I really love LITERATURE as an art form. I am interested in the PLOT and well-written CHARACTERS. I’m also crazy about CINEMA. Cinema seems to me something magical, unique, partly a kind of mixture of music, THEATER and literature.

Units 21

I like to listen to and create music. This is a separate magical world, in which its own laws and rules rule.
Unfortunately, I very rarely listen to music with ALBUMS, rather, I prefer to listen to individual TRACKS that give rise to a response in me. When I was in high school, my friend created a ROCK BAND, in which I was a KEYBOARD PLAYER, since I’ve studied at a music school. My friend was a BASS GUITARIST and LEAD SINGER and her sister was a DRUMMER. It was an interesting stage of my life.

А.В. [(11) 11]

Unit 21

Scientists have proved that MUSIC, whether it is FOLK, HIP-HOP or CLASSICAL MUSIC, brings benefits. Just imagine, listening to JAZZ or to any other style of music, may relieve symptoms of depression, reduce stress, or even ease physical pain. The main thing is to listen to the music according to your TASTE. What would it be? 60’S or CANNED MUSIC, rock or, may be, blues…

А.М. [(3,5) 14,7]

Units 21, 47

A band consists of a LEAD SINGER, a LEAD GUITARIST and a DRUMMER.
TRACKS from their ALBUMS are not MUZAK, but like POP and FOLK.
They are TRAINED and TALENTED MUSICIANS.

А.Я. [(4) 20]

Unit 21

She was twelve and WAS INTO CLASSICAL music. She PLAYED the piano FOR 8 hours a day; she READ MUSIC well and had good technique. She played Mozart, Schuman and Tchaikovsky a lot, before her elder brother brought home a JAZZ ALBUM. Then her life changed: she became obsessed with jazz and improvisation, and became a KEYBOARD PLAYER in the JAZZ BAND where her brother had been playing the LEADER GUITAR for a month by that time.

Units 8, 19

How often, looking at another PIECE OF ART, for example, a PAINTING, can we feel what the ARTIST has put into his work? When depicting a particular phenomenon or action, the artist can be FRANK, RUDE, ORIGINAL, very different. The AMBITIONS of the creator are visible in his work. The LANDSCAPE in dark colors, where sea waves rage and break on the rocks, can be interpreted in different ways. Probably, the PAINTING tells the viewer about some violent experiences of the ARTIST or about his indignation, and perhaps the waves in general characterize the despair of the author of the PAINTING. Everyone answers the question "what did the ARTIST want to say?" in his own way, and the creator's task is only to convey the state of the soul.

Units 8, 19

A desire to know more about THE ARTS is just a GREGARIOUS feeling among the teenagers? That is what could some people claim. My point of view is that we need to be more SENSIBLE and ARGUMENTATIVE, because native ART LOVER starts small. Even NAIVE and PUSHY impulses in an attempt to become like others can open wide horizons and potential in every single person.

В.Ч. [(2,5) 9,1]

Unit 8

Literature, being itself related to THE ARTS, contains variety of classifications. For instance, it can be divided into three primary forms such as: PROSE, POETRY and DRAMA. In addition, there is a variant of classification which distinguishes forms more narrowly and in a detailed way -- that of genres.

А.М. [(2) 8,2]

Units 8, 19

-Good evening! And this again is our program ”A pallet”. Last time we talked about the ARTS: DRAMA, SEETING, CAST and so on. And today Professor Morris is with us. So, Professor Morris, would you be so kind as to give a piece of advice on what qualities people that have to do with DRAMA should have? -Good evening, sure. I suppose that they should be GREGARIOUS, EASY-GOING, EVEN-TEMPERED, DOWN-TO-EARTH, SHARP, DETERMINED, ARROGANT, UNCONVENTIONAL, BROAD-MINDED, AMBITIOUS and ASSERTIVE. -Thank you, you are very GENEROUS in advising.

Units 8, 19

I knew the cousins – Mia and Mark. Their fathers were siblings, and they lived in neighboring houses and were best friends, despite the fact that they were absolutely different. Mira was BRIGHT, INTROVERTED and WELL-MANNERED. Mark was EXTRAVERTED, very TENSE, and often quite PUSHY. Mia was keen on PERFORMING ARTS and was a ballet dancer, while Mark did Math and Physics for doing business in engineering.
