EVU Upper-Intermediate

3rd year of study: Autumn 2021

Unit 78

I suppose that it is possible to get rid of SAD, AKA seasonal depression, but, of course, one should make an effort to do it. Not surprisingly the WHO is worried now. Young people, teenagers sleep less than they need, eat unhealthy food, use their MOBILES and HIGH TECH devices without break. I.E. they squander their health. Therefore, it is vital to change the diet - to eat less CARBS and GM products, and take at least 1 KILO of fruits and vegetables per day. Moreover, it is good for our health to eat more proteins, E.G. eggs, milk, ETC. It is often beneficial to use some BAA (Biologically Active Additive). Specialists are sure that measures should be taken ASAP.

Unit 48

In her childhood my niece was an overactive kid, so her behaviour was sometimes unbearable because she really TOOK THE BISCUIT, and everybody was sure that she IS AT FAULT. Nevertheless, she started going to school and now she is a FIRST-RATE student, she IS REALLY ON THE BALL. She is HEAD AND SHOULDERS above other children but at the same time she’s GOT THE GIFT OF THE GAB and HAS A WAY WITH all her classmates. I’m really proud of my niece not only because she is AMONG THE BEST but because she is very active and does her best to achieve her goals.

Unit 48

The verb CRITICISE can be used not only for saying that something is bad, it can also mean: to give opinion or judgement. It's interesting that the derivative from this word CRITICAL might be used with different meanings. For example, if your mother is always scolding you, it's possible to say that she is HIGHLY CRITICAL of you. On the contrary, your behaviour might be HIGHLY PRAISED or CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED by your parent. Furthermore, if a person is desperately sick it might be said that he is CRITICALLY ILL. And the last meaning concerning significance: you might say that you are going to make a CRITICAL DECISION if it's really important to you.

Unit 46

To tell the truth, I can’t stand drinking milk. I don’t find it TASTY at all. Moreover, it isn’t SWEET-SMELLING. Of course, when I was a child, I used to drink fresh milk in the countryside. I OBSERVED my grandmother milking cows, GAZED at those wonderful animals who had deep eyes, whose moo was DEAFENING for my child’a ear, and I even STROKED them, tried to HANDLE them WITH CARE. I WITNESSED how they were grazed, and I was absolutely surprised that the grass that they were fed turned into milk. However, it may be just my INTUITION but I suppose that milk from our shops isn’t the real fresh milk because it is TASTELESS. Perhaps, that’s the reason why I don’t like it anymore.

Unit 17

For most of the teachers it is vital not only to MAKE A PROFIT, but also to GET A FEEDBACK from their students, to observe their real results and development. Their PRIORITY should be CUSTOMER CARE, for example, they always should make a plan how to make the education comfortable and effective for each student. Their work should not depend on any RECESSION, and they should do their best using EXPANDED resources even if they face STIFF COMPETITION.

Unit 14

In the UK there's a different education system. Children there go to a SECONDARY SCHOOL at the age of twelve. Furthermore more, after a COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL they may go to a SIXTH FORM which is the highest level in school system. There they can prepare to take A-LEVELS - the UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMS. After SITTING the exams they may go to a college, too, and then get a FURTHER EDUCATION.

Unit 17

Don't be afraid of DOING your BUSINESS! Here's a common scheme of LAUNCHING it. Before starting, PUT FORWARD a BUSINESS PLAN and go thoroughly through your main goals. You should decide what you are going to sell: MASS PRODUCED or CUSTOM BUILT products. Moreover, you need to do a MARKET RESEARCH: it's all about CUSTOMER CARE. You should be sure that POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS exist and ROLLING OUT goods is WORTH THE RISK.

Unit 15, 16

It's not very easy to MAKE A LIVING after GRADUATION especially when you haven't been working yet. You should be ready for TAKING ON a particular job concerning your SPECIALITY. Sometimes for many youngsters it's easier to begin with TRADES not PROFESSIONS, or they start their career as UNSKILLED WORKERS. As for me, a young person does not have to be afraid of APPLYING FOR A JOB, maybe in the beginning for a low-paid one, but in the end, hopefully they will BE PROMOTED.

Unit 16

My elder brother tried to APPLY FOR A JOB when he was studying at university. Of course, he was an UNSKILLED WORKER and wasn’t able to WORK NINE-TO-FIVE. But he was a real WORKAHOLIC and TOOK ON different jobs in order to MAKE HIS LIVING as he wanted to be totally independent of the parents. Firstly, he engaged in TRADE, he was a seller, then manager, at that time he WORKED SHIFTS. He was MADE REDUNDANT several times, but continued making an effort. And finally, he has achieved his goal as he has become became a DIRECTOR and creator of his own e-shop.

Unit 14

SCHOOL LEAVING AGE can be different in many countries. But as for me, it's better not to be in a hurry on leaving the school because only well-educated, diligent and responsible students pass END-OF-YEAR EXAM successfully. Moreover, there's more probability to DO WELL while SITTING UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMS at the more mature age.

Unit 14, 15

I remember myself going to a COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL and writing my UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAMS but now I’m already in my 3rd year receiving my HIGHER EDUCATION. After I will GRADUATE, I’m going to begin my POSTGRADUATE STUDIES and to receive MASTER’S DEGREE. I’m also going to do PHD if my plans don’t change.

Unit 14

In the USSR to ENTER university one had to SIT EXAMS. These exams were called ENTRANCE EXAMS and without them it was impossible to go to university. During the year one also needs to SIT EXAMS and teachers MONITOR students’ progress. Then students take END OF YEAR exams.

Unit 15

My sister started her career path being an UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT of Biology Department. She was really diligent and enjoyed LECTURES and SEMINARS and visited all the TUTORIALS with incredible zeal. That’s the reason why she decided to study for a MASTER’S DEGREE and write her DISSERTATION. However, she had to work at school as a psychologist at the same time to earn her living and pay the TUITION FEES. Due to her strict timetable she wasn’t able to take part in any STUDENT SOCIETIES, that was a pity.

T.Z. [(4) 8]

Unit 14

In my attempts to enter the university to get HIGHER EDUCATION, I had to SIT a lot of EXAMS. For example, I once had a UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE EXAM in MSU, but I DID not DO WELL. Still the most difficult exams I took were during DISTANCE LEARNING: there was my honesty examined for we had a lot of opportunities to cheat those days.

E.D. [(2) 14,1]

Unit 14

When I was learning in a COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, I decided that I would go on further to HIGHER EDUCATION. But firstly I had to TAKE four EXAMS, two of which were COMPULSORY for every student. Although I never SKIPPED CLASSES, I was really nervous before the END-OF-YEAR EXAMS, and I was afraid that I wouldn’t manage to PASS them. Fortunately, I DID WELL and now I’m studying at university.
