EVU Advanced

4th year of study: Autumn 2021

7-8

When employers are looking for employees, the first thing they pay attention to is the person's MOTIVATION and then the qualities that a person has. If a person is really LOOKING TO WORK in this FIELD, then he will show in every possible way that he FITS THE DESCRIPTION of this job and will be able to develop A REWARDING CAREER in this field. If this employee turns out to have real DRIVE in his work, then he may be given SALARY INCREMENTS.

9-18

One girl was standing at the mirror and SCOWLING at her reflection. She found a lot of FLAWS in herself. She considered herself SCRAWNY, GANGLING, LANKY. She didn't have A DOUBLE CHIN, but there were hollow cheeks that she didn't like. She would rather be a STOUT girl.
She ran her hand through her UNKEMPT HAIR and realized that she didn't want to have A HAIR OUT OF PLACE. Then she SCOWLED, her SWARTHY face began to express anger, she CLENCHED HER FISTS and hit the glass.

10-19

CHARACTER TRAITS are individual elements of your personality and behavior that express who you are as a person. They are based on your personality, morals, ethics and beliefs. We are all different people and our characters are also different. And what is good for one can be completely bad for another. AN INTROVERT and AN EXTROVERT will never be able to accept each other. Because for an INWARD-LOOKING and QUIET person, the EXCITABILITY and IMPETUOSITY of a GARRULOUS extrovert will be DISDAINFUL. While OUTWARD-LOOKING and sociable person will be annoyed by the TACITURNITY and HAUGHTINESS of the introvert.

22-31

Reading books is one of the most enjoyable and exciting activities. Especially if the book is COMPELLING, then COMPULSIVE READING is inevitable. Some ENIGMATIC TALES or A POIGNANT STORY will drag you out and you will not be able TO PUT IT DOWN. If you GET INTO IT, then you just enjoy it аnd it doesn't matter how HEAVY GOING or LIGHTWEIGHT it is.
But one important thing is that A MACABRE and CHILLING ACCOUNT is not A BEDTIME READING, but some kind of A WRY HUMOR story may be suitable.

Units 7-8

I am happy to say that my PURCHASING POWER increased over the last 3 years. Now I can afford SHOPPING AROUND on the weekends. Of course, sometimes I make purchasing decisions based on BRAND LOYALTY, but it does not mean that I will not buy something good from an unfamiliar company. What I cannot stand is TELEMARKETING. TELESALES and COLD CALLING can drive me crazy.

Units 9-18

At the age of 15, almost all boys look GANGLING and LANKY. Then some of them BULK UP, they go to the gym or playing football. Many of those WIRY and sometimes even SCRAWNY boys become STOUT by the age of 40. Some of them can be STOCKY, and very rarely some of them are OBESE.

Units 10-19

When you find a new job, you have to face people with different CHARACTER TRAITS. During some joint projects, you will see IMPETUOUS and IMPULSIVE people, as they are in a hurry so they start working without asking anyone and under no supervision. Nevertheless, everything is going to be okay if the director is a WELL-BALANCED person. There may be some INTROVERTS and EXTRAVERTS among your colleagues as well.

Units 22-27

Many people can disagree, but for me “Jane Eyre” was a PAGE-TURNER. I remember the same BREATHTAKING feeling when I read some detective stories at school. These books were so GRIPPING and ENIGMATIC! The plot was COMPELLING, it was hard to guess who the antagonist was, and that is why I JUST COULD NOT PUT DOWN all these books.

Unit 26

Peter was planning his holiday and couldn’t quite make up his mind. At first he thought to GO ON A CRUISE. He could get a DELUXE cabin on the UPPER DECK, go to some EXOTIC islands and GET AWAY FROM IT ALL. But then he remembered that even a CROSSING on a FERRY made him uncomfortable so he decided to stick to land. He could travel by train but then he realised that he would have to CHANGE TRAINS as there was no THROUGH TRAIN and so he tossed away that idea as well. Finally, it dawned on him that there was another way of GETTING AROUND. He could hire a car, get UNLIMITED MILEAGE and COME AND GO AS HE PLEASED. He would stay at different GUEST HOUSES or INNS with FULL BOARD. Peter followed his plan and had the HOLIDAY OF HIS LIFETIME.

Units 7-8

Last week we had a class about CAREER and PROMOTION. Then we switched to the topics of shopping, business and trends. It should be said that DRIVE is essential to become successful. Some people say that it’s risky to set up business in CLOSE-KNIT teams, but I can’t agree with this statement, because one person can have better SALES EXPERIENCE, while others are better in promotion. To sum up, I’d like to say that the most essential thing is JOB SATISFACTION.

Units 9 + 18

Last week we went to the modern art museum and there was one huge painting with around 100 of people. The painting depicts people of different complexion, appearance, nationality. Some of them were SLENDER, LANKY and even SCRAWNY. Such people usually look miserable and GANGLING. The other part of the Other people were STOUT, STOCKY, CORPULENT or, unfortunately, even OBESE. Therefore However, there is a group of people who care about their health and try to keep fit. They are BULKED UP, LEAN and WIRY. There are also some UNKEMPT people or, the opposite on the contrary, some of them are NEVER A HAIR OUT OF PLACE and IMMACULATE. Talking about facial expressions, they are also very different. Some people are GRINNING, others SCOWLED.

Units 10 + 19

All people are so different and this is wonderful. For instance, some of them are IMPETUOUS, IMPULSIVE and EXCITABLE. Usually we call such people EXTROVERTS, they are OUTGOING, but it’s really important not to become PUSHY in this way.
Others are INTROVERTS. They are quiet, calm, WELL-BALANCED and TACITURN. However, sometimes they can be SELF-CONSCIOUS, DIFFIDENT and low in SELF-ESTEEM.
For some people it’s a bit difficult to be RESERVED and UNAPPROACHABLE because it may seem that they are ALOOF, HAUGHTY and DISDAINFUL. Sometimes it’s not easy to communicate with CONCEITED, SELF-IMPORTANT and MODEST people because it’s difficult to trust them.

Units 22 + 26

When I come to the bookshops I like to read different BLURBS, they are really helpful when you don’t know what to choose. I immediately can understand if the book is MACABRE and CHILLING or if it’s ENIGMATIC, full of INSIGHTS and BREATHTAKING, do whether I want to read it or not.
But first I decide which genre I would like to read next. It could be a JOURNAL, or MEMOIRS. Often there are EPONYMOUS PROTAGONISTS of the authors. I love these types of books, usually they are very INFORMATIVE, GRIPPING and you CAN’T PUT them DOWN.

Unit 22

Peter Jackson is an ACCLAIMED writer. He’s very versatile and his books always attract a wide READERSHIP because everyone can find a book according to their taste. For example, one of his books is a MACABRE thriller with such a GRIPPING plot and ENIGMATIC characters that you just CAN’T PUT IT DOWN. Another book is a POIGNANT love story with some BREATHTAKING scenes. His recent book is a fantasy with an EPONYMOUS PROTAGONIST and so far has mixed reviews. Some say that the book is AHEAD OF ITS TIME but a bit HEAVY GOING. And others say that it’s a PRODUCT OF ITS TIME but COMPELLING nonetheless. And in the future Mr. Jackson is planning to write his MEMOIRS. He says they will be very INFORMATIVE and full of WRY humour.

The Browns are a happy family but they are so different from each other! People say that Mr. Brown is RESERVED and even ALOOF but actually he’s just very DIFFIDENT. But Mrs. Brown is a truly HAUGHTY and DISDAINFUL woman. But she is also EFFUSIVE and GARRULOUS and if you are a NAÏVE and GULLIBLE person, she can make you believe that she’s very nice. The son, Peter, is rather CONCEITED and PUSHY. He can also be quite OBSTINATE and if he decides to do something, he would do it no matter what. And the daughter, Ann, is a FLIRT. Also she is a very CONSCIENTIOUS girl and you can rely on her.

Units 9 (3rd edition) and 18 (3rd edition)

Harry and Peter are best friends but they couldn’t be more different. Harry is STOUT, with a SWARTHY complexion. He always looks NEAT with his IMMACULATE clothes. When he doesn’t know what to say, he SHRUGS HIS SHOULDERS and then GRINS at you. He doesn’t have bad habits; although sometimes he PICKS HIS NOSE. And Peter is LEAN and WIRY. He doesn’t care about his appearance and his hair is often UNKEMPT. His complexion is SALLOW and he looks a bit HAGGARD. He often SCOWLS at people and BITES HIS NAILS but it’s because he’s shy and nervous around strangers. He likes to sit with his ARMS FOLDED and his LEGS CROSSED.

After college Harry INVESTED IN a business START-UP which not only didn’t turn out to be LUCRATIVE but there were many problems with the ADMINISTRATION. Fortunately, a larger company appeared with a PROPOSITION of a TAKEOVER. Naturally, they quickly HAMMERED OUT A DEAL. After selling his CAPITAL ASSETS Harry’s PURCHASING POWER increased and he was able to TRADE UP his house and car. At our linguistics class we discussed CONNOTATION last week and I remember that it can be either positive, negative or neutral. We were asked to give examples of connotation we know. My groupmate told us about COWBOY BUILDER, it is a builder who performs shoddy work at an inflated price. Then we switched to shopping, business and trends topic. Most of people nowadays don’t like to SHOP AROUND because it’s a waste of time. They usually have their BRAND LOYALTY. What is more, in order not to waste time it is better to check if the shop you are going to go to has something you need IN STOCK or not. At the end of our discussion we decided that nowadays young people are starting different START-UPS and some of them can be very LUCRATIVE in the future.

Unit 7

I think that nowadays COLD CALLING is something unpopular. Moreover, such forceful methods of selling like HARD SELL are perceived negatively. Most of people would prefer to SHOP AROUND because it gives them options. I can say that I’m the very person whose purchase decisions depend on BRAND LOYALTY. These brands have their own NICHE MARKET that trust them.

Uncle Brad used to run a large company. He had a huge PURCHASING POWER and could PART WITH HIS MONEY. But two years ago a larger company contacted him with a disadvantageous PROPOSITION, to which he agreed. That company suggested a TAKEOVER and my uncle totally lost the power over his company.
