| 1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Suggested questions:
Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived, only after they had fallen and left paradise. Does this mean they were not supposed to live as man and wife and have children before the fall? Support your view.
Comment upon Eve's comment upon the birth of Cain "I have gotten a man from the LORD".
Comment upon the meaning of the names of Cain and Abel.
Comment upon the respective occupations of Cain and Abel. Do they have a symbolic meaning?
Just as we hear about conception and birth for the first time only after the Fall, so do we hear about "an offering unto the Lord", i.e. sacrifice offered to God, only outside the paradise. Why do you think that is so?
Why do you think "the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering, but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect"?
Why do you think Cain was so upset that God rejected his offering?
Why did God address to Cain some questions? What do His words in verse 7 mean?
What were the motives of Cain in slaying his brother?

At first sight, it may seem that the process of bearing children and such opportunity didn`t exist during the period when Adam and Eve lived in paradise, but if it was so, how could they fulfill the commandment to multiply? So logically speaking, this opportunity must have existed, but as theologians suggest, the time of Adam and Eve being in Eden was quite short, and they were more focused on communion with God.

Why do you think "the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering, but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect"?
The acceptance or rejection of offerings could be linked to the heart and intention behind the sacrifice. Abel's offering, coming from the firstlings of his flock and the fat thereof, may have been offered with a sincere and obedient heart. In contrast, Cain's offering might have lacked the same level of sincerity or might not have been in accordance with God's instructions. Here is an interesting thing about the version of the Bible for children which I used to read in my youth. In this text it`s stated that Abel offered to God the best animals of his flocks, while Cain`s sacrifice consisted of products of not really high quality.
