8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Suggested questions

Why would the Lord God be walking in the garden in the cool of the day? Who could He be speaking with?

Why did Adam and Eve hid themselves amongst the trees? What does an attempt to hide from God tell about the state of their minds and souls?

Why would the Lord God address Adam the question "Where art thou?" Didn't He know? Why it wasn't the question "Where are you?"

What does Adam's response "I was afraid, because I was naked" add to our understanding of nakedness? Why is it necessary to hide it?

Why would God ask such a strange question as "Who told thee that thou wast naked?" Is it something you need to be told? Isn't it self-evident?

Adam formally tells the truth when he responds to God's question "Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?" the way he does -  "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat." But is it a true answer to the question? Why/why not?

Eve formally tells the truth when she responds to God's question "What is this that thou hast done?" by saying "The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." But is it a true and full answer to the question? Why/why not?

Why does God ask no questions of the serpent? What kind of serpent was it, judging from God's decree concerning it in vs. 15-16?

Why would God, Who is good and is love, put "enmity" not just between two of His own creatures (the serpent and the woman) - but also between "seed"? How long is this enmity supposed to last?

What is meant by the serpent's "seed"?

What is meant by the woman's "seed"? The Greek word used here in the Septuagint (σπέρμα) traditionally has male associations.

Comment upon syntactical incongruence in the phrase about the woman's seed: "it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel" (v. 15).

Why  God, Who is good and Who is love, would "greatly multiply" (v. 16) What woman's sorrow in bearing children, simultaneously with planting in the woman desire towards her husband (which would normally lead to further childbirth), together with His own previous commandment to "multiply"? Reflect on the implications of this for the present-day child-free movement, as well as the painless delivery trend and general family and gender crisis.

What do God's words "he shall rule over thee" add to the fact that the woman had been created as "an help" for the man (Gen. 2:18)?

Whom does God believe to be ultimatelly responsible for the Fall (cf. Gen. 2:16-17; Gen. 3:11; Gen. 3:17)?

Why does God give a reason when pronouncing His punishment upon the serpent and the man ("Because thou hast...", vs. 14 & 17) but gives no similar reason to the woman (v. 16)?

Who of the three persons involved in the Fall gets the greatest punishment of all? Support your view (cf. vs. 14-19).

1. Why did Adam and Eve hide themselves amongst the trees? What does an attempt to hide from God tell about the state of their minds and souls?

Adam and Eve's attempt to hide reveals a sense of guilt, shame, and awareness of their disobedience and spiritual «nakedness», about which it was told in v.7. It signifies the recognition of their fallen state, fear and the desire to avoid the consequences of their actions.

2. Why would the Lord God address Adam the question "Where art thou?" Didn't He know? Why wasn't it the question "Where are you?"

God's question serves as an invitation for Adam to acknowledge his spiritual and moral condition. It is not a question about physical location but an opportunity for Adam to reflect on his state of separation from God due to sin and also an offer to confess and repent.

I think the nakedness symbolizes the fall into sin.  Adam hid because he didn't want God to see him for who he really was. This is the way the way the person who have sinned beheaves. He is always trying to hide his sinnfulness, to justify himself.  Nakedness is also the symbol of vulnerability.
