Emily Jane Bronte is born in Thornton, Yorkshire, the younger sister of Patrick Branwell Bronte, who becomes the model for the dissipated Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Emily will comment: "If I could I would work in silence and obscurity, and let my efforts be known by their results."
