59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.

60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.

63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.

66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.

67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Saint John Chrysostom writes:
It is not in vain that it is said that he loved her and was comforted by Sarah, his mother, but so that you would know the foundations of this affection and love, which consisted in the woman who came. Who, indeed, would not love such a wife, so chaste, so modest, so hospitable, humane and meek, courageous in soul and strong in body?

This passage describes the events surrounding the arrival of Rebecca, Isaac's future wife, at his home. An important point is the blessing that is bestowed upon her, wishing her to become the mother of many nations. When meeting Isaac, Rebecca immediately covers her face with a veil, which is a traditional custom of that time. At the end of the passage, it is mentioned that Isaac fell in love with Rebecca and found solace after the death of his mother Sarah.

This passage can be considered as a historical account of the events related to the marriage of Isaac and Rebecca, as well as a demonstration of ancient rituals and customs inherent in that time. He also emphasizes the importance of family values and traditions.

"And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them"

The blessing proves to be prophetic, since Rebekah, as Isaac's wife, was one of the ancestors of the numerous Jews and of all believers.

"And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country"

Lahairoi means "well of the Living God". The name refers us to the story of Egyptian slave Hagar. The well is called so in memory of her seeing the Angel of the Lord near the spring (She had to leave Abraham and Sarai) (Gen 16:24)

Rebekah embodies the ideal of femininity, but at the same time she is not afraid of work: she goes for water, carries a water jug on her shoulders, and now climbs on a camel. Ancient women had such a fortitude that they climbed camels themselves and made their journeys in this way.

After reading these passages, these thoughts come to mind: Rebekah is so humble, obedient and pure that she was rewarded for it. For her decent behavior, she was named sister and wife. This is an example for modern women.

In this passage, I want to comment on two things. The first one is how Rebekah accepts her future life, becoming a mother of thousands of millions, that's because she is pious. And also she is courteous because of the way she covered herself with a veil when she saw Isaac.

The second interesting moment is how Rebekah comforted Isaac after his mother's death. Somehow she replaced Sarah for him and became the closest person.

This passage makes me think of Rebekah's parents. Was it easy for them to say goodbye to their daughter and bless her to be the mother of million people. This blessing also shows her parent's trust to God's will.

24:60 – This prayerful blessing had a prophetic character, for Rebekah, as Isaac's wife, was one of the ancestors of the numerous Jewish people and of an even greater number of all believers.

On meeting Isaac, Rebekah descended from her camel and covered herself with a veil; the first probably being her respect for her future husband, and the second symbolising his right to have her.

In this passage, the author draws attention to the phrase “ And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide." It seems that in the evening, Isaac withdraws from his daily activities and goes to the field to be alone. This reflects on the structure of our daily lives, and how and what we do at the end of the day.

This is a significant aspect, as it appears to be no mere coincidence that Isaac encounters Rebekah when he wasn’t thinking about the earthly concerns of everyday life. Perhaps this is the only time when one can truly encounter with the hand of God.
