17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Suggested questions:

Why did God save Noah’s extended family together with him? They were not marked by particular righteousness.

Was it difficult for Noah to fulfill God’s commandment?

How could Noah possibly "bring into the ark" all kinds of wild animals and even birds?

How much food do you think Noah took into the ark, and what kind of food was it?

In the last third of chapter 6 God tells Noah that He will destroy every person, creature and thing on the planet by a great flood. Everyone and everything on the planet will die, expect for Noah and his family. God says that He will establish with Noah His covenant, and gives him further instruction: that Noah and his family should come into the ark, and he should bring a pair of every kind of animal and bird with him, and also food for the people and the creatures.

In my opinion, the most remarkable thing in this passage is the fact that Noah did everything God had told him to do. Because this task clearly demanded a lot of effort and even more faith. Noah did everything God had told him to do without a single question, however difficult or strange it seemed. And as Metropolitan Philaret writes, the narrator notes the fulfillment of God’s command by Noah very briefly in order to show that there are no difficulties in fulfilling the known and immutable will of God.

Even before Eve was created, God said: “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Gen. 2:18). If Noah’s family had perished, Noah would have suffered from loneliness and the longing for them. Moreover, God wanted the human race to continue.

How could Noah possibly "bring into the ark" all kinds of wild animals and even birds?

I think the animals came into the ark under the influence of God’s grace. It was the same grace, which made savage beasts lay down at the martyrs' feet and a wild lion - serve St. Gerasimus of Jordan.

I think God saved Noah's extended family because God needed to inhabit the Earth with people and to send His Son to the Earth, but for this people had to reproduce. Noah couldn't reproduce alone.

Of course, Noah wouldn’t have managed to bring into the ark all wild animals but for God’s succour. But we should mention that, probably, Noah brought not all kinds of them. For example, some scientists say that mammoths became extinct during the Great Flood. But anyway it was according to God’s will that not every creature survived, Noah saved all the animals and birds that the Lord commanded him to salvage.

God gave Noah direct instructions to take food for animals and his family into the ark. This is absolutely logical: neither animals nor humans can live long without food. Predators would start eating herbivores, rodents would gnaw the sides of the ark... Can't risk it, right?

Noah would have to take a large amount of food, mostly plants, because it does not spoil and it does not need to be cooked over fire. And besides, even predators are able to survive on plant food.

Noah couldn't bring them all himself for sure. It wasn't within his human powers. Some interpretations suggest that animals might have had an instinctual response to the impending disaster, leading them to migrate toward the Ark (actually, I love this interpretation).
This idea posits that God could have instilled in them a sense of urgency to seek refuge.

I think it sounds pretty logical. Of course it was God's Divine Grace that made it all happen.
