| 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

How do events described in verse 9 correspond to modern scientific views about early periods of the Earth?
Plants are said to be created before the Sun. Why do you think that is? What does it tell us about the life of plants?

| I think that the phrase "God saw that it was good" is repeated to underline that according to the Christianity the creation is good. All the things that were created by God are good. It is the contrast with the pagan cultures where all the things that created were bad. (Ancient Greek myphology mythology is an example).

| Stars are said to be created "for signs" (v. 14). Can you think of an example?
St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom write that “signs” don’t relate to astrology that tries to predict what will happen with a person in his/her life. The signs warn us about rains, winds, bad weather or drought. God created so according to His love to people, His mercifulness so that men who go on a voyage can escape danger or so that people who grow crops may take necessary measures. For example, if the Moon is thin and clear, it predicts rainless weather. Whereas if the Moon is with thick horns and red, it means that it’s going to be a heavy shower or a strong wind from the South.
Naturally, now we don’t use these tips from God because we have a forecast. But if we were attentive to them, probably, we would know the coming weather more precisely.

Plants are said to be created before the Sun. Why do you think that is? What does it tell us about the life of plants? - According to St. Basil the Great, God created plants before the Sun, so that people would not think that the Sun gave life to everything and would not worship it.

| I believe "God saw that it was good" was repeated so that the reader would be sure that God was controlling the process of creation every step of the way and that everything that was created was, in fact, good. Also, this repetition serves the purpose of reminding us that everything God sends our way is good, whether it's light or darkness, because everything was created and was "certified good."

| "God saw that it was good" is repeated seven times in total throughout the creation story. Why do you think that is?
I've read that the repetition was the result of God's excitement with great functionality of His creations. He called things good because they were ready to fulfill their potential. By the way, it's worth mentioning that the verb "to see" is also repeated. It is the sign that God had a plan for each thing and after creation He observed them. It is His right, as a Creator to judge and determine whether something is good or not. He also reassures us that we should bestow trust in Him and learn that everything that was created is good and it is for us.
