| 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

| What is meant by "the heaven and the earth" in verse 1?How can anything, including "the earth" (verse 2), be "without form"?
As theologians say "the heaven and the earth" may mean two things:
1) A metaphor for the whole universe, simplified to this phrase in order that people can understand it;
2) Creation of two «places» or two worlds, the visible one and the invisible.
I personally can only agree with these understandings and try to combine them. In my opinion these words might mean the creation of the whole universe including these two worlds as parts of it.
Continuing this idea, that the visible world is meant by «the earth» we may say that this part of the universe was only created separately from the heaven but wasn`t formed yet.

| 1.I suppose this phrase means that God creates two worlds. The first is invisible world (with angels), but the other is visible - our world. We usually say: "God created the world", but in fact, He created two worlds. So, these two creations should be separated in the text. The words earth (the future world of people) and heaven (the world of angels) are used.

| 1. I think the angelic world is meant by “the heaven" because the firmament was created the following day. And “the earth” means the ground, which was yet void and covered by water.
2. I think that the assertion “The earth was without form” means that the earth was covered with darkness and water.
4. Though there were no stars yet, the light was created and it was emanating from God.
5. According to St. Demetrius of Rostov, the angelic world is meant by “the heaven” in the first verse. The visible sky (firmament) was created on the second day.

| 4. Some interpreters consider this light to be uncreated, the light of God's glory. We might see the proof of this idea in the Gospel of Saint John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it" [John 1:1-5]. King David, the Psalmist, interpreted light as God's word: "The entrance of Your words gives light" (Psalm 119:130). Other interpretations suggest this light to be a primordial light that no longer exists.

| I believe by "the Heaven and the Earth" it is meant that those two matters were created and divided as two opposites. Some people believe that this verse also shows that the Earth, as a planet, plays the most important role in the whole creation and the whole universe created by the Lord. Some people believe that this is the moment when God chose the Earth to be the planet where He lets people live. I personally do not share this point of view, but it is certainly interesting.

| 2. How can anything, including "the earth" (verse 2), be "without form"?
The words rendered in English as "void" and "without form" seem to be very close in meaning in the Hebrew original. In Ellicott's Commentary we read: "Literally, tohu and bohu <...> signify wasteness and emptiness. <...> It expresses here the state of primæval matter immediately after creation, when as yet there was no cohesion between the separate particles". Benson's Commentary adds: "It was without order, beauty, or even use, in its present state".
"The earth" in the meaning of all material world was not even visible yet because of the absence of light. It was disordered and empty until God gave it form (together with order, beauty and use) in the following days of Creation.

| It seems that words which mean well-known things (heaven, earth, light, water, day, night) do not have in this excerpt their usual meanings. Why do you think this is?
To my mind, these words are used symbolically, to put some undefined ideas into a certain familiar shape that transfers a key "feature" or some "solid" characteristic of an object intended in each case. It is like with anthropomorphisms that we use while referring to God's actions: when He "sees" something or "hears" that doesn't mean He has eyes or ears to do so.

| Stars were created on the fourth day. What kind of light is then meant in verse 3?
According to the fathers of the church, the initial and primary light had been created before stars, the moon and the sun were created. It was made for saints and righteous people as primary creation of God and was hidden for them. That claims God is the reason of all things, as He creates things from nothing, and the ultimate purpose of our existence for us to see that Light.
