There are three kinds of nature in man, as Nicetas Stethatos further explains: the carnal man, who wants to live for his own pleasure, even if it harms others; the natural man, who wants to please both himself and others; and the spiritual man, who wants to please only God, even if it harms himself. The first is lower than human nature, the second is normal, the third is above nature; it is life in Christ.

Overall, the statement makes sense, but it is the interpretation of the division of man into three natures that doesn't sit well with me. In addition to these «natures» there are a great number of sins in man, which he must struggle with throughout his life. Not all people suffer from selfishness, many have other sins that they struggle with throughout their lives. Still, having the same nature, all people suffer from different sins to varying degrees.

Life in Christ is definitely about pleasing God and loved ones only, forgetting about self, cutting off selfishness. Nevertheless, we should not forget that everyone is different and everyone's path to salvation is unique. Obviously, each person must spend his or her whole life working on his or her relationship with God and the people around him/her.

I agree with this quote. It seems to me that all people can be divided into two main types. I have noticed that there are people who only think about themselves and will do anything for their own benefit, and "natural" people who don't forget about others and are willing to help. That's just how human nature works, I suppose.

However, it was only recently that I realized there are also people who live in a different world and they are closer to God. Their intentions and their appearance are often unclear. For instance, Xenia of St. Petersburg or St. Basil the Blessed. Their actions may seem strange, but they seem to be more connected to a higher power.

I find this quote very motivating to be better.

I believe that many Christians live in the second nature, as mentioned in the quote. As for me, those who choose death for Christ have approached the third nature and there is no other way to do that. We live in a modern world with many temptations. By fighting these sins, we make ourselves better and release ourselves from sin, allowing us to enter God's kingdom. Therefore, we must think about ourselves at that time. Whatever we do to achieve heaven (even if we truly love God) is for our own sake. However, this is not bad, as not many people can even overcome simple "bad habits."

To sum it all up, I believe we need to die for God in order to achieve the third nature, but living in the second one is not bad if we are thinking about our salvation.

I agree with Tito Colliander. Indeed, there are three kinds of human nature.

The carnal man embodies selfishness. Selfish behaviour is a degradation of true nature, and it prevents us from being closer to God. The natural man is a well-balanced human, which is good for society. The spiritual man is about life in Christ, which is very hard but possible, as we can see many examples of saints.

To conclude, I suggest that all of these three kinds of nature illustrate the whole spectrum of human behaviour, from the worst and the easiest one to the best and the hardest.

I believe this statement simplifies human nature for some didactic purpose, which I personally do not agree with as a way of teaching. I stick to believing that Christ accepted human nature in whole, as is, and this is the way we have to accept ourselves and others, without trying to find some parts to reject and some parts that we "like" or that are "good". There's no evaluation in acceptance and I think that the way of love is the way of open-heartedness to everyone's being with no judgment or division into "nature manifestation types", otherwise there's more pride than true abnegation.

Every person throughout their life is in one or another state of mind, inherent to each of these natures. As a rule, childhood is characterized by a gravitation towards covering basic needs, which for obvious reasons must be satisfied. This is what parents must work with in order to teach the child the importance of empathy and compassion and not allow egoism to develop, the belief that everyone owes him. Under favorable circumstances, a stage of personality maturation occurs, which is due to the fact that a person remembers and cares about himself, and still gravitates towards earthly life, but in addition to his own needs, if not everyone, then those dear to him fall into his value system. And then, a meeting with God must take place, whose hand will gradually lead him to eternity.
