Patient perseverance in prayer is for man a very hard ascesis, that of denial of self.

I agree that perseverance in prayer is part of what is called "denial of self". We are commanded to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and many Church Fathers comment on the joy found in prayer. However, for it to be joyful it has to be all about God and not ourselves. If prayer is a means to get a material or spiritual gift, and that gift is not granted, it may cause frustration and make us abandon prayer. If we do not restrict prayer to our petitions, and even when asking for something trust in God's goodness and timing, we will persevere. Our prayer will not be in vain (Matthew 7:7-8), whatever the answer to it may be; faith comes first and the answer second. Inconsistent prayer is sometimes also a result of excessive self-reliance when we fail to acknowledge God's involvement in our daily lives. In this case, it is impossible to pray continuously without giving up our false sense of control, which is also a kind of self-denial.

Prayer is a very important part of every Christian's life. First of all, prayer is the main way a person communicates with God. Often through prayer a person can receive comfort and help from God, understand how to act in any situation.

Of course, since prayer is the basis of the Christian life, it is often the basis of temptation. Many people find it very difficult to build their routine around prayer. Every night many suffer from the choice of whether to pick themselves and go to bed early, read a book, or take time for God and prayer. The same can be said for morning prayers - because we sacrifice our sleep for the sake of spending time with God. That is why prayer is a renunciation of self and self-interest. This can be a difficult challenge in today's world, but those who are able to maintain regularity in prayer are comforted and helped by God.

I agree with the statement. Maintaining a calm and clear mind while praying can be challenging, especially in the evening when our daily activities are passing us by and we become distracted by them. Therefore, it is essential to remain focused and try to concentrate during prayer at all times. This is a true challenge, and I believe training is necessary in order to maintain this level of concentration while praying.

I personally agree that there should be some perseverance in our prayers; though I believe that praying is creating. As for me, each prayer (even the shortest one) is like a mustard-seed, and the only thing that we have to do is to enforce it to grow somehow when we pray. Perseverance, as I see it, is not about creating some clear space in our minds, it is about filling it with mustard-seeds becoming trees reaching out for the sky and creating shadow for our souls to rest under.

I find it enigmatic and astonishing, not hard.

It reminded me the quote of St Silouan the Athonite which is “praying for people means shedding blood”. A genuine sincere prayer is a gift from God and also a result of constant continuous training. At first, you are only capable of short and shallow prayer when you fail to drown out your anxious and roving thoughts of urgent matters which makes it difficult to concentrate on praying. However, as if preparing us for the self-denying genuine prayer, unceasing commitment will bear fruit when a day of sorrow and grief comes. When there is nobody and nothing you can rely on and your praying becomes the cry of the soul and you are even ready to suffer for your neighbour so he would get better. A man is called for loving his neighbour and a prayer for him really becomes a form of self-denial when instead of easily condemning and scolding him, you show compassion, feel sorry for his dying soul and invite God to show His mercy to him, especially when it seems he deserves a punishment only.
