The Lord allows us to be tossed by various passions in this life in order that we may hate these passions with all our heart, that we may look upon everything earthly as nothing, however precious and pleasant it may appear, and that we may long with all our hearts for God alone...

Not without reason it is said that he “who has never tasted bitter, knows not what is sweet”, or “all things are known by comparison”. Indeed, only after having been tossed by dastardly passions, fallen into a sin and repented, we start appreciating pure life with God, we start pining for it. That’s why people who were far away from Church after realising how sinful was their life was, begin hating their past habits, their eyes are open now and they are blissfully happy that they have found the Lord, they become perfectionists and want to pray without ceasing.

Moreover, we have to face adversity during our earthly life because after death, according to a theory, ordeals will come when people are tempted by different passions. At this fiendishly difficult time our soul will make a choice - whether to follow sinful desires or to stay with God. And therefore, during our earthly life we should do our best to curb our passions, to overcome our sinful nature.

That’s why I fully agree with Righteous John who assures that temptations are vital indeed for our purification down the road and Salvation.

The Lord allows us to be tossed by various passions in this life in order that we may hate these  passions with all our heart, that we may look upon everything earthly as nothing, however precious and pleasant it may appear, and that we may long with all our hearts for God alone... This is the quote of John of Kronstadt. I partly agree with this issue. I'll try to express my view on it.

On the one hand, Father John is right. We should strive to the Lord only, and abandon all wordly things: "But seek first the Kindom of God and his  righteousness, and all these things be added to you." ( Matthew, 6:33).

On the other hand, It is possible only for monks, but lay people can't do it. They can't follow God totally. They have a lot of temptations and fuss. Besides, it is very difficult to  rely on God during any test.

In conclusion, I only can say that, despite all the difficulties we should lay rely on God and  believe God as Peter once  believed that he could walk on water.

I have noticed that when I value earthly things too much, I lose them.

In 2018 I entered the university I dreamed about (MSLU). I was proud of my industriousness and purposefulness but it was only for a year. In my second year I burnt out and lost these qualities. In 2021 I got to know a girl, whose appearance and character I admired. I tried to find support in communication with this person but it happened that we stopped communicating.

These situations humbled me. That’s why I agree that we should “long with all our hearts for God alone” and don’t value earthly things more, however precious they may be.

I agree with Righteous John: enduring various passions teaches us to see their emptiness and turn our hearts toward God. When we’re tested by earthly desires or struggles, it reveals how fleeting and unfulfilling these things are compared to God’s eternal presence. This experience encourages us to let go of attachment to worldly pleasures, even those that seem enticing. By resisting and even suffering through these passions, our hearts are purified and we begin to long for God alone, finding true peace and purpose. It’s through these challenges that our love for God can grow deeper and more sincere.

Of course I agree with this quote by Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt. Our whole earthly life is a continuous struggle. Each person has his own life-long battle and the most difficult thing for a person is the struggle with oneself.

God sends us challenges to test us, to see if we are ready to live according to the rules of the Eternal Kingdom. We all want to learn to live according to earthly laws, because they dominate our world, but the Lord teaches us to always strive for a heavenly life, renouncing passions and everything that distances us from God. Only unceasing prayer and a person's desire to be closer to God can bring salvation.

I think this quote explains the way we should come closer to God. All people have earthly desires such as fame, power, love, wealth and many other pleasures. The most amusing point is that these desires are not sins, they are not inherently sinful. They are just our natural human desires, and they are essential parts of the human condition. We need to use them right, but should not overdo and put them higher than God. When we do so, we come to the feeling of disenchantment, because such desires have a fleeting nature, while God offers to us life in Heaven with infinite pleasures and love.

So sometimes we need to "hate these passions with all our heart" to become closer to God. This quote reminded me of the book "The Pilgrim's Progress" by John Bunyan where the main character even left his wife and children to escape from the City of Destruction and find a way to the Celestial City.

To conclude, I suggest that we need to be ready to lose everything for God, so I agree with the quote. And if the passions attack us too strongly, we should pray and always remember that the sin is an illness, and God's love is our treatment.

I couldn't disagree with this quotation more. Recently, I have been struggling with some depressive thoughts, and I went to a priest for advice. He told me that all we have in life is experience, and we must live through it. We should not forget about confession, and avoid sin as much as possible. However, some passions teach us how to fight them, and some experiences help us not to fall into temptation again. Therefore, I believe every true Christian should keep this in mind. By making mistakes, using prayer, and hoping for God's grace, we can be saved.

It seems to me that this quote essentially reflects the significance of human existence on Earth. Our earthly path is a journey of overcoming desires and giving up on things that tempt our bodies and souls in order to achieve Eternal life. This quote reminded me of Elder Silouan of Athos, who said, "If a passionate movement does not have any delightful moments, but immediately begins with suffering, it will not be able to conquer a person's will." It is an interesting idea that we cannot initially recognize something as sin or passion, and any new deed or activity does not seem terrible at first. Even if we feel negative about a new goal, which we later recognize as passion, we initially treat ourselves gently and allow ourselves to relax.

In my opinion, this experience is crucial for a Christian. For instance, things that didn't repulse me even a year ago now seem strange and devilish. Therefore, Silouan of Athos says, "Passion, like suffering and death, is felt immediately only by a spiritual person who has experienced the life-giving effects of divine grace, which produces disgust in the soul and 'hatred' for sinful movements within oneself." So, I would like to ask God for strength and patience to help me in my fight against temptation. And it seems to me that starting any new endeavor should begin with prayer.

I guess that is the truth true. The Lord deliberately allows temptations to come to us in order to test us. And when we give in to temptations, fall low, and after all realise what we have done, we can truly realise the miserable state in which we find ourselves, hate all our sins, and soar in the soul to God even more.
