When you are slandered, and therefore grow disturbed and sick at heart, it shows that pride is in you, and that it must be wounded and driven out by outward dishonour. Therefore do not be irritated by derision, and do not bear malice against those who hate you and slander you, but love them as your physicians, whom God has sent you to instruct you and to teach you humility, and pray to God for them.

Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt

Christ teaches us: "Blessed are ye  when men shall revile you, and persecute you,and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake" (Math. 5:11). For that we are promised to inherit Heavenly Kingdom.

As saint John of Kronstadt rightly says, we are prideful, when such kind of slander hurts us, and then we cannot inherit Kingdom of God. The main goal of our Christian life is to gain such traits of character and  cleanse our heart the way that we could be able to bear these Beatitudes, and then become heirs of Heavenly Kingdom. And there's no other way there but that of sorrow and grief and injustice of this world, as Christ Himself suffered all that, and by His suffering showed us the way of salvation. That is what is meant by the words of Holy Fathers that our main aim as Christians is to be like Christ.

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)
Christ reveals an example of humility and meekness. Look at His birth in a manger, at His deeds: blessing children, washing the feet of the disciples and at last being mocked and crucified. Our God Jesus Christ suffered and was despised by others. Likewise we should endure others’ misunderstanding and vilification - in the name of Christ:
“ If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.” (John 15:18)

Of course, from the point of view of salvation of the soul, the words of John of Kronstadt are correct. We should be grateful to evil people because they give us lessons in humility. But I sincerely do not know how to tolerate slander. Moreover, we have Beatitudes, which say: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst  after righteousness, and they will be satisfied."

Therefore, it seems to me that this is a very delicate issue in which slander can concern only yourself directly, and where slander concerns other people as well. So, I guess it is for me to confuse cowardice with meekness.

These are wonderful words! I think it is important to remember this, because the mocking and judgement of others gives us the opportunity to be humble. It is certainly much easier to be offended by bad words or to say something bad in response, but we should listen to the words of Righteous John and instead of being offended and angry, we should take everything as an opportunity to improve and change something in ourselves.

It seems it’s an extremely difficult, almost unbearable task not to get offended or, at least, distressed when being slandered. As well as irritation, malice or sorrow as a reaction to mockery seems quite natural. However, Christianity is not about “easiness” and conformity with human nature. Instead of cursing the offender we should bless him, we shouldn’t hate but love.

As Righteous John writes, that kind of response (offence and irritation) reveals pride which one holds in their heart. The only way to handle it is to strive for attaining humility which may bring you nearer to God.

In Luke 6:22 we read ”Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake”.

I agree with this quote. Here we are talking about how to properly treat defamation and attacks on a person in a Christian way. I think Christians need to learn not to react to bullying and slander with anger, but instead see an opportunity for self-improvement. When we feel upset about slander, it indicates the presence of pride, which needs to be healed and banished by suffering external humiliation.

The most important thing in such situations is not to get annoyed by ridicule and not hold a grudge against those who hate you and slander you, but to love them as your doctors, whom God has sent to you for your teaching humility. Therefore, the next step is to pray for them.

This quote by Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt may seem illogical to people who are far from Orthodoxy, but I agree with this statement. If you are very angry at slander, it means that you are very dependent on public opinion. It is important for you what others think of you, it is important to be a good, exemplary person in the eyes of society, which is a manifestation of pride. But it is worth remembering that before God we are like an open book, He knows everything about our deeds, intentions and thoughts. Besides, if you are a good person, then those around you are unlikely to believe the slander.
I, too, sometimes get upset when I encounter slander, but I try not to worry about it and remember to be humble.

Holy Righteous John plainly explains that sometimes we are slandered or mocked in order for us to get rid of pride.

An example comes to my mind from my own experience. When I feel confident, am sure that I’ll do everything correctly, I have bad luck. When I boast about something I have, I immediately lose it. People may say that I put the evil eye on it but I interpret this kind of situations differently. God just teaches us that our pride and boasting is sinful and that now we should change our behaviour, become meek and humble in order to repent. That’s why the Lord sends those people who help us realise that we indeed have nothing to boast about. This is one of the ways God leads us to Salvation.

Of course, at the moment when we are slandered, it’s almost impossible to recall the profound meaning of our suffering. But Holy Righteous John reminds us that these hardships will lead to purification of our souls.

In my opinion, it is not possible to be proud if someone slanders you. If this hurts you so much, it means that you are afraid of someone finding out that you are not perfect. We are afraid of being seen as sinners, and we don't want anyone to talk about our weaknesses in front of others. This makes us feel weak and unstable, and unable to stand up for ourselves. We all have feelings of pride, envy, anger, and even madness, but these are what makes us human. These are the challenges we have to face and overcome.

I see exactly what Righteous John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt, meant. Of course, it can be challenging to love your so-called 'enemies' - those who hate and slander you. However, we should strive to do our best in order to achieve salvation. Christ said in the Sermon on the Mount: 'But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous' (Matthew 5:43-45). We should indeed follow God's example, take up our Cross, and walk in His footsteps. Enduring outward dishonor can help us combat pride. Those who humiliate you can teach you true Christian love; it's challenging not to feel offended by them. Not only should you ignore your haters, but you should also love and pray for them.

Slander does reveals our pride and offers a path to humility. The Bible teaches us to respond to adversity with love and patience. In Matthew 5:44, Jesus instructs, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This echoes the idea that those who slander us are instruments for our spiritual growth. By enduring derision without malice, we follow Christ’s example, who "when he was reviled, reviled not again" (1 Peter 2:23). Viewing our detractors as physicians sent by God helps us cultivate humility and strengthens our faith.

However, I cannot but admit that I really want gossip to pass us by, since a Christian should be a model of virtue in the eyes of the world [?].

I absolutely agree with these words, even though it was very hard for me to accept them. At the beginning, you feel only offence and pain. But time heals, and you actually start to understand how thankful you are to all offenders for every piece of pain they have gifted. They teach us not only humility but also durability and the power of our soul. It's great to be Christian because nothing can really ruin your life, nothing can break your love or your connection with God. So I wish all my offenders and slanderers a great time in paradise. I wish them the best I can.

Of course I can see why this quote is considered true. Personally, I struggle a lot when it comes to bad words from other people, especially those I love. I find it very hard to ignore these words and bless others who have said them. I try to work on it but it can be very difficult.

I agree that sometimes when we are offended it's because we have a high opinion of ourselves, but there are situations where you are sad because you really believed that person but it turned out that they were talking rudely behind your back. For me that is the most heartbreaking thing.

I really like the idea in this quote that those who hate you are your own physicians sent by God and I totally agree that we should learn to love them as God loved the people who murdered Him.

When you are slandered, and therefore grow disturbed and sick at heart, it shows that the pride is in you, and that it must be wounded and driven out by outward dishonour. Therefore  do not be irritated by derision, and do not bear malice against those who hate you and slander you, but love them as physicians  whom God sent to you to instract and to teach you humility, and pray to God for them. I agree with this statement and I'll try to explain why.
Some people can slander us because they can't understand the whole situation. They think we did something wrong when we might not have a thought of doing something wrong. They try to blame  us. Therefore, we feel offended. This is obvious. We are prone to self-justification. We always think we are better than others, that's why it is very painful to hear slander. We start swearing and blaming people too. I think the problem is that we forget about our own sins and we forget that probably, did the same in our life, we just don't remember.
The second point here is that we forget that God is everywhere and He can see what we can't see. He knows what we don't know and He also knows that we are innocent, consequently, we nothing to do except praying for the person who slanders us.
Another thing to mention is that the Christ was slandered and when we are slandered we become a little Christ. We become pure.

To sum up, I should that It is really difficult to hear someone's slandering you but we must overcome it, and probably prayer can really help.
