Describe Russia (its climate, vegetation, agriculture, industry, population) using words from the unit.

Have you ever been to taiga, tundra or steppes? Describe your impressions.

If you are a tree-lover, do you like deciduous or coniferous trees better? Why?

Have you ever tended sheep or cattle? What was it like?

What fields do you know Russia to be at the forefront of?

How much do you know about your ancestors? How long ago did they settle where you were born?

Have you ever met anyone belonging to an indigenous tribe?

Why is the number of immigrants growing in the developed countries, including Russia? Tell about a positive and a negative experience with immigrants.

Would you ever consider becoming an emigrant?

I'm really in love with trees. I like Moscow and the city center - it's honestly pretty. All these old structures and new modernized buildings. But there is so little greenery there! I very much enjoy coming to the place where I live because there are so many trees! It's easier to breathe and it makes my eyes happy. In summer everything is green, in spring everything is blooming, and in fall and winter it's a real fairy tale. I can say with certainty that I could not live in an area where there is too much concrete.

As I've gotten older, I've become more attracted to quiet places with lots of nature. I absolutely love walking through parks and forests. It's the kind of thing that no human hand can create. I think there is a lot of hidden beauty around that we often don't notice.

I think that I really like coniferous trees, firstly they are very beautiful and so high. Their crowns stretch into the sky and it is unspeakably exciting to watch the sky, flowing clouds through green high branches. Secondly, coniferous trees provide air with oxygen, that’s why it’s wholesome to walk in such forests. As for my family sometimes we go to pinewood - we wander, run or play with siblings, so coniferous trees are also associated with joyful girlhood.

There are PADDY-FIELDS in the East.
This area is PRONE TO DROUGHT, RAINFALL is very low. There are a lot of trees, including CONIFEROUS, DECIDUOUS AND EVERGREEN TREES.

I think I am a tree lover. And the more I am, the longer I am in the city, and the further I am from any forest or grove. I deeply love coniferous trees, - maybe it is because I came from the North, and a lot of forests in the area where I live are coniferous. Spruces, pines, firs, and larches grow there.

I like the smell of coniferous trees. Especially in the autumn, when it is mixed with the smell of fallen foliage. Pine forests are also very bright and, I'll say, transparent. The light of the sun always pours between the branches and trunks of pines. Pines seem to me very tender and very strong at the same time, and pine forests always comfort me and grant me with peace.

Describe Russia (its climate, vegetation, agriculture, industry, population) using words from the unit.

Russia is a vast country spanning two continents, Europe and Asia.
The climate varies from arctic in the north to subarctic in most regions, temperate in the European part, and continental in Siberia.

The vegetation in Russia includes forests, steppes, tundra, and taiga. The southern regions have fertile soils, while the northern areas are prone to permafrost and limited vegetation.

Agriculture plays a significant role in Russia's economy, with major crops including wheat, oats, potatoes, and vegetables. However, agricultural productivity can be impacted by the challenging climate and vast land area.

Russia has a diverse industrial sector, including oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, and aerospace.

The population of Russia is around 146 million people. It is the largest country by land area but faces demographic challenges such as an aging population and low birth rates. Major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg are centers of economic activity and cultural significance.

DROUGHT is type of weather condition typical for some places like deserts. Such areas are called ARID  and they don't get much RAINFALL. Other places are PRONE TO heavy rainfall and can sometimes experience FLOODS.

The problem of the growing number of immigrants is quite relevant. There are many people from the Middle East in Russia in particular and in most developed countries globally. However, another issue occurs. Thousands of Russians have left the country. That made me wonder if I could consider becoming an emigrant.

Though I’m eager to study abroad and am the biggest fan of travelling - thanks to my wonderful parents I have visited many countries all around the world - I don’t want to leave Russia as it is my motherland. That’s the place I love, the place where I have grown up, the place where my family and friends are, the place where everything I can call mine is. The motivation of people who are moving today is obvious, I don’t want to condemn them, I can only be compassionate.

She adored RAINFALL, as well as waterfalls, PADDY FIELDS and CONIFEROUS forests. The EVERGREEN trees, “everfalling” water and long, endless fields were making her think of life everlasting.

Why is the number of immigrants growing in the developed countries, including Russia?

The increasing number of immigrants in developed countries can be caused by various factors. Developed countries usually offer more job and career opportunities. Migrants are looking for better working and living conditions and prospects for improving their well-being. There are also some immigrants who choose countries with advanced education systems to get a quality education. Students and specialists from all over the world are attracted by universities and research centres. In my opinion, the number of immigrants may also be influenced by the existence of talent attraction programmes, refugee programmes or other migration policies.

1 Brazil has a varied climate where abundant RAINFALL, contributes to the rich vegetation and Amazon Rainforest. 2 Despite being known as a tropical country, northeastern regions of Brazil experience an ARID climate with limited rainfall, challenging agriculture. 3 Brazil is impressive in its diversity of VEGETATION, where the vast Amazon Rainforest, savannahs and unique ecosystems form the country's rich landscape.

Would you ever consider becoming an emigrant?

Ever since I was a little girl, I asked myself the question: would I move permanently to live in another country? When I was young, my family and I travelled a lot, for which I am incredibly grateful to my parents. I had the opportunity to see how the most ordinary people live in different parts of the planet, how their lives differ from one another.

It is interesting to note that the older I got, the less it seemed to me that moving forever to another country was for me. At first, in each new country I would say: «How wonderful it is here! I will definitely move here when I grow up!» Now, with each passing year it becomes more and more difficult to say this, as I can no longer live without the familiar Moscow streets, without the playground at the neighbouring house where so much joy and sadness was experienced with my closest people.

A couple of years ago, a hypothetical option of moving to the other side of the planet arose, but I immediately imagined how I would leave absolutely everything behind, I would not be able to go to my family at the first opportunity and being close to them would become impossible. After these thoughts I gave up the option of emigration.

However, I will never turn down the opportunity to travel as it is my favourite pastime. I am sure that travelling and getting to know the cultures of different countries make our lives brighter. This experience cannot be compared to anything else.

The evergreen forests of the highlands contrasted sharply with arid lowlands, prone to drought and dependent on seasonal rainfall. The immigrant farmer, a descendant of a long line of rice farmers, carefully cared for his paddy fields, honouring the knowledge passed down from his ancestors.

I would say that I can't choose between these two types of trees, as I'm a true lover of nature. I adore wandering in forests, looking at the delicate and tiny details of everything in nature. But honestly, coniferous forests are charming. Their trunks create beautifully colored walls and the smell is just wonderful. Moreover, thanks to the height of conifers, you can easily walk through the forest, stepping barefoot on soft moss. Also, I'm deeply in love with conifers because blueberries often grow there, and I can take my family and friends out to pick them and then make something delicious with them (check photos).

However, let's imagine a Russian tale: birch forests and porcini mushrooms, young girls singing folk songs and playing hide-and-seek. I can't say that I love this atmosphere any less than what I've described above.

I am a huge fan of trees and forests. I am amazed by how old the trees can be. I like to spend time in the forest hiking and chilling, and recently I tried my best to find some mushrooms, eventually I found one that wasn't poisonous. As for coniferous and deciduous trees, I like them both. But the odor of coniferous trees always makes me crazy, I adore it. Recently I understood how to distinguish between spruce and pine trees by their cones. Spruces have longer cones, while pine trees have short ones. So I guess that I like coniferous trees more than deciduous.

1. James adores to travel, he liked visiting TUNDRA, where VEGETATION is limited. 2. He hiked in CONIFEROUS  forests with EVERGREEN leaves and in DECIDUOUS forests. 3. Once he even saw PADDY FIELDS and helped farmers with growing CEREALS. 4. James lives in a DEVELOPED country, but it doesn't prevent him from travelling to DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, where MANUFACTURING isn't AT THE FOREFRONT.

Why is the number of immigrants growing in the developed countries, including Russia? Tell about a positive and a negative experience with immigrants.

The number of migrants in Russia is increasing due to a number of economic and social factors. While positive experiences with migrants may not be as common as negative ones, this is partly due to the fact that
migrants in Russia often come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in Central Asian countries and may have certain level of social and psychological challenges.

From my own experience, I have noticed that there are more negative perceptions of immigrants than positive ones.
I have often observed that some visitors do not take care of the environment and leave behind litter. In certain areas where there is a high concentration of migrants, I sometimes feel unsafe, especially in the evenings. Their behavior can be unpleasant, especially for young women.

Despite these challenges, I try to maintain an open-minded attitude towards migrants. They are the same people like us who are seeking better opportunities for themselves and their families. I understand that they may face difficulties in their home countries, and I try not to be judgmental.

1) My family and I have visited Thailand last year and there was quite high RAINFALL. 2) Despite this fact we visited many attractions and saw PADDY FIELDS. 3) I liked Thai people because they are mostly DESCENDED from INDIGENOUS tribes, so they have great traditions and a rich culture.

1) I have always been dreaming about visiting tundra. 2) I like coniferous trees a lot, that's why I want to visit taiga too. 3) But the idea of green prairies also make me excited.
