Describe a work of art that you find interesting using words from the unit. Post an illustration, if possible.

What do you think about modern art in general?

Is there a work of art that you find challenging or controversial? Provide an illustration with your  commentary to solicit response from your classmates.

Is there an art movement / style that you find particularly appealing?

Do you agree with the following statement from the unit? --
"Perhaps because of the ubiquity of advertising, people tend to be more visually literate than they used to be, and so are perhaps inured to surprises. Perhaps new movements in art will meet with less hostility in future."

Describe a positive example of art used in advertising. Provide an illustration, if possible.

Describe a negative example of art used in advertising. Provide an illustration, if possible.

In what ways do you think has colour printing, television and digital representation affected our perception and appreciation of art (as opposed to seeing art live in galleries and at historical sites)?

Why do you think we use words connected with art when talking about literature? (See an example in section С of the unit.) Are there ways of discussing works of verbal art without resorting to visual arts metaphors?

I may not be a specialist in art, but I find all art really inspiring as it is an individual's self-expression. Yes, there are industries and styles that we don't embrace because we don't understand them, or they simply don't match with our aesthetic choice. But there is a place for all art!

I would like to highlight a couple of styles of painting, if we are talking about it. I'm very inspired by hyper-realism. It's a style that is truly vivid, like a photo. Artists dazzlingly betray details, I want to look at such paintings completely. I will add examples of such pictures.

Also, black and white easel graphics in painting win my heart. Simple and tasteful, isn't it? this style can also transfer the smallest details. Below are examples of the graphic style.

1. As a child, my mother reacted to my drawings as if they were something PRICELESS and PEERLESS.
2. If you think some art is a DAUB, it does not mean that you are right.

«Всадница» by K. P. Brullov

This painting is thought-provoking. Watching at it, we start to ponder what stands beyond the picture.

This famous painting depicts Countess Samoilov's female pupils. On the left is the youngest Amazia and on the horse is the eldest Jovanina.

According to the artist's plan, "Всадница" is a large portrait to adorn the front hall of Samoilova's palace. The portrait was commissioned by the Countess. She said more than once that she wants to drape all the walls with "his wonders".

The artist shows his ideal world. And in this world being is beautiful. There's the charm of childhood and the pride of youth. All this we can see on the faces of the little girls.

This painting is original - he renewed daily life and filled it with poetry and and tender colours.

In my opinion it is priceless.

There are many SCHOOLS of ART. Children should be INURED to good paintings in order they can distinguish ORIGINAL, HIGHBROW, CHALLENGING DAZZLING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING, PEERLESS and SKILLFUL paintings from LOWBROW ones.

I believe advertisements made by Mayakovsky and Rodchenko to be some of the best, at least some of the most known examples of art used in advertising. It’s a well-known fact that Mayakovski was a professional artist along with being a poet. Some posters, made by him in 1920-s are a proof of this.

While it may sound a bit weird today, I suggest that Ads can be a piece of art - works of Mayakovsky are not exceptional in their breed. There is a great variety of advertisements, created in the 20th century, which might be called masterpieces. Delicate works of my favourite Alphonse Mucha or beautifully-naive works of Pirosmani come to mind. Or, for instance, some video ads made by Salvador Dali. And they are all connected by ingenuity, and, what Mayakovsky thought to be important in advertising, diversity and imagination.

One of my favourite SCHOOLS OF ART is IMPRESSIONISM, which was developed by Claude Monet and other French artists in the second part of 19th century.

Instead of painting in a studio, the impressionists were capturing the moments, all the LIGHTS, SHADOWS, SHAPES and colours by working not in their workshops, but in front of their subjects they were DEPICTING,  in the open air - “en plein air”. This resulted in a greater awareness of light and colour and the shifting pattern of the natural scene.

One of my favorite contemporary artists is Michel Basquiat. He is a self-taught American artist who has worked in the genres of graffiti and neo-expressionism. He used graffiti as a conceptual gesture and as a kind of VISUAL ART.

I think his work can be called provocative, THOUGHT-PROVOKING, INTRIGUING and quite SOPHISTICATED. At first glance, it is difficult to see a complete composition in his paintings, they are more filled with symbols, signs, words, logos, shapeless figures, numbers and many others.

Despite the chaotic composition, improvisational manner, seeming IMPENETRABLE, randomness in the choice of words and objects depicted, all of Basquiat's works were carefully thought out and constructed like a collage.

And although I don't have a favorite painting by this artist, I'm discovering something new in each of them. I find in his chaotic paintings a logically thought-out concept, a system. I also like the way Basquiat does not try to follow the canonical rules of fine art, he paints the way he wants. This feeling of freedom is transmitted to me through his paintings.

When I was in art school, we were taught art history, where we studied different styles, such as IMPRESSIONISM, Baroque, Romanticism. Later I immersed myself in this topic and realized that SURREALISM  is very close to me.  This kind of painting is ORIGINAL, THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND SOPHISTICATED.

Describe a positive example of art used in advertising. Provide an illustration, if possible.

One positive example of art used in advertising is the iconic "I Love New York" campaign, which showcases how art can effectively promote a destination and evoke positive emotions. The campaign, created in 1977 by the graphic designer Milton Glaser, has become an enduring symbol of New York City.

The campaign features a simple, yet powerful, logo consisting of the phrase "I ❤️ NY" in bold letters, with a heart symbol replacing the word "love." The heart symbolizes affection and love for the city, while the bold typography creates a visual impact and immediacy.

The "I Love New York" logo has been widely used on various advertising materials, including billboards, print ads, merchandise, and even on taxi cabs and souvenir items. Its simplicity and universal appeal have made it instantly recognizable and associated with the vibrant spirit, cultural richness, and diverse attractions of New York City.

This positive example of art in advertising demonstrates how a well-designed and memorable artwork can effectively capture the essence of a place, evoke emotions, and create a strong brand identity. The "I Love New York" campaign not only promotes tourism but also instills a sense of pride and love for the city, making it a successful fusion of art and advertising.

Of all the painting movements, IMPRESSIONISM is the one that appeals to me the most. I like the use of sketchy strokes - energetic, large and COLOURFUL. And of all the impressionist painters I find Claude Monet PEERLESS.

Modern art is a fascinating and diverse realm of creativity that challenges traditional norms and allows for innovative expressions of ideas and emotions. I appreciate how it pushes boundaries, provokes thought, and reflects the ever-changing nature of society. Artists often use various mediums, styles, and techniques to convey their messages, making modern art a rich and dynamic field.

However, modern art can also be divisive. Some pieces may appear abstract or unconventional, which can lead to differing interpretations and opinions. As a philologist, I might find the textual or linguistic aspects of contemporary art intriguing, as many artists incorporate language, symbolism, or wordplay into their work.

Describe a work of art that you find interesting

“Café Terrace at Night” (1888) is one of my favourite Van Gogh paintings. Apart from the techniques used by the artist, his recognised special talent, there are many things that connect me with this painting.

Van Gogh masterfully portrayed the play of light, that is why I am incredibly drawn to the warmth of the café that is felt when looking at the painting. It is as if the coffee shop is the only island of warmth and comfort in the darkness of night. Also this painting very vividly conveys the atmosphere of the French South. Small streets, happy people chatting at the table of small family owned cafés.

Van Gogh is one of our family's favourite artists and in 2019 we visited Arles, where this painting was painted, as well as many other works by the great artist. We had the opportunity to listen to a very interesting tour about Van Gogh, to walk in his footsteps, to stand at the places where his easel stood during the painting of his future masterpieces. Unfortunately, now, due to the large influx of tourists, the cafe depicted in the painting has lost its charm, but the whole city, nevertheless, has preserved a piece of the great artist.

I would say that I agree with this statement. In today's world, visual arts are often the main source of information, as well as auditory sources. People expect to see something unique at modern art exhibitions. Therefore, the more original and minimalistic your work is, the more successful you will be.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to this situation. On the one hand, you can create whatever type of art you want, and there is no risk of failure: you will either be noticed or not. No one will judge you, you can be either sophisticated or primitive. On the other hand, you may create art that does not come from your heart, but that people want to see from you. In this way you don't care either you art is clumsy or exquisite. This means that you are dependent on society and its opinion. You are not free to be creative in your own way.

So, in my opinion, it's good that people are exposed to more and more different types of art, but at the same time, it's important to remember who you are and not to create something that's too lowbrow. The most valuable art is that which comes from the heart.

I think that the best example of art used in advertising is in our candy's wrappers. Many famous artists such as Vasnetsov, Benois and Vrubel draw very sophisticated design works for the candy company "Red October".
Nowadays, we are all still eating those candies and enjoying their colorful and dazzling wrappers.

Describe a negative example of art used in advertising. Provide an illustration, if possible.

I would rather call these advertising examples controversial, not negative. On the one hand, they look so funny and original, but on the other hand, I don't think that Leonardo da Vinci would agree to make this thing happen. We all know "Mona Lisa" to be mysterious and thought-provoking. But now let's look at how some companies (Lego, printers, and coffee) used it in their own way:

I can't single out any one movement in art. I like Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Expressionism equally.

However, this summer, I discovered something new about art. Previously, I considered still lifes as academic drawings that served as a measure of an artist's skill. But I now understand that this is not the case. Still lifes, through the use of symbols, light and shadow play, and special fruits, convey a whole world. This is a paradox for still lifes - images of dead nature can actually evoke and convey the finest emotions.

The exhibition I visited at the Hermitage this summer featured still lifes that reflected the main stages in the development of Flemish still lifes. Successors of Rubens, such as Snijder and Brueghel, brought a new perspective to the genre. Exotic fruits, bouquets, and hunting trophies, which were often seen in the homes of the wealthy, in reality is not just a mere decoration.

------------------------------------
The IMAGE of fruits in the vase is indeed SOPHISTICATED and THOUGHT-PROVOKING. The ART-MOVEMENT of still-lifes originated in the XVII century in Flanders. The Baroque SCHOOL OF ART DEPICT fruits, flowers and dead animals.

While Impressionism and Surrealism are often considered traditional schools of art, Op-art, with its focus on optical illusions and geometric patterns, was deemed a more challenging and sophisticated style. Visually literate viewers can appreciate how skilfully Op-art artists work with shapes and colours. Still the style remains original and difficult to understand for some people.

1. Henry's favourite PAINTING is "Guernica" by Picasso, he thinks it's absolutely SOPHISTICATED and CHALLENGING. 2. Henry can talk hours about how SKILFULLY it was made and how PRICELESS it is. 3. But his worst enemy Fred thinks that "Guernica" is CLUMSY,TONGUE-IN-CHEEK, DREARY and PRIMITIVE.
