Write about your most memorable (so far) composition, essay, or assignment, using words from the unit (include info on the topic, writing process and challenges, and the outcome).

Have you ever used mnemonics while preparing for your exams?

Did you ever cheat at your tests or exams at school? Did it work?

Do you ever read academic journals? Name them if you do.

I'd like to tell you about my essay that I was writing at my Unified State Exam. That was a literature exam and honestly I decided to take the exam right that morning. I didn't know how to write it properly, I didn't know the writing criteria. I just came and did it using the Russian language exam essay template. But amazingly, after checking, I got nice scores.

Before the exams all the students are starting to CRAM for it. We are DOING SOME REVISIONS and trying to find PAST PAPERS from missed lectures. But it's quite hard because in parallel we are writing lots of ESSAYS and COMPOSITIONS. The most difficult thing is that it all starts in a short time before the DEADLINE.

Have you ever used mnemonics while preparing for your exams?

Yes, I often try to use this technique in my life. For example, when I need to remember important historical dates, I just try to visualize them and remember the drawing and not just cram it. I mean, I imagine a telephone numeric keypad and just mentally draw a diagram that is very easy for me to remember. So, this technique helped me pass the history exam and I also learned by heart the phone numbers of all my family and friends and different codes on documents. But I think this technique is not suitable for every person. Because each of us has a different perception of the world. And as for me, I think I have a visual perception.

Students must complete various written works such as ESSAYS, COMPOSITIONS, ASSIGNMENTS and various PROJECTS. And in order to cope well with these works, students must BURY THEMSELF IN THEIR BOOKS, study INTENSIVELY until they KNOW THE SUBJECT INSIDE OUT. They can also use ACADEMIC JOURNALS, ARTICLES, PAPERS or internet resources to write their works. It is a good idea to start with a MIND MAP when preparing some work. And I would advise to write a FIRST DRAFT before WRITING UP the final version.  There is one important thing to remember. It is the DEADLINE after which your essay cannot be SUBMITTED. Such an essay will not be ASSESSED by the teacher and you will not get FEEDBACK.

(1) I have recently read an article about how to prepare for the exam. It was said that the biggest mistake students make is that they try to CRAM information and not to LEARN BY HEART or MEMORIZE it. The article said that ROTE-LEARNING is not sufficient for most subjects. It would be much more useful just to REVISE by looking at PAST PAPERS and try to learn information using the MNEMONICS.

It may be surprising for to someone, but I like writing our semestral essays for literature classes. I like choosing my own specific theme, doing some revision of available literature on the internet, carrying out my own research. Usually it takes me two days (typically a weekend) of studying intensively to finish my essay. I don’t draw mind maps or whatever, but just read articles and note or write out abstracts that will be useful for my work. I like it, because you don’t really have to cram or rote learn, trying to remember vast amounts of easily forgettable information. Firstly, I come up with a plan, which represents the general idea of my work. Then, I write a first draft of each chapter and check if the thoughts are presented clearly, the order is fine and the conclusion is solid. Then I write up the essay, check it once more on the next day, and, finally, submit it. I usually do that long before the deadline. It is one of the rare occasions when I feel satisfied with the work I’ve done.

For me the most memorable essay was the one I wrote for my state exam in the Russian language. I had been cramming very hard for it. I like this subject and did not want to let my teacher and myself down. I know it inside out and did not want the result of the state exam to screw everything up. And the biggest problem I have with compositions and essays is that I'm not attentive enough. Especially when I've been writing a text for some time I just cannot look it through so carefully that I could find all the mistakes and misprints. And specifically with that exam, when I was writing it, I felt really nervous and at some point, having looked at the clock, I thought that there was only half an hour before the end. I was so startled because my essay existed only as a first draft and it takes time to write it up properly. So I started quickly to rewrite it in the blank form. And only being at the last paragraph I realised that it was not half an hour but an hour and a half. I felt really exhausted because of the stress I had had. So I did not check the essay accurately and all the points I lost were from that very part of the exam.

It is so memorable as it represents one of my worst problems with studying which is the anxiety that swallows me because of the fear of failure.

The history of the country is taught in a form of ROTE-LEARNING at school. It is believed that pupils will MEMORISE the dates and events better this way. But the fact is that most of them simply LEARN the paragraph BY HEART before the lesson and never REVISE it again. No wonder that it is impossible not to KNOW THE SUBJECT INSIDE OUT but just know it somehow if you don't learn it INTENSIVELY. If there are some reports, they are usually fully copied and won't be anything but PLAGIARISM. Yet I guess it is because pupils are wanted only to learn something about the subject, but I doubt that it is very helpful. It is far better in universities where we have to ACKNOWLEDGE all the sources, to CARRY OUT RESEARCH and it all will be ASSESSED and some FEEDBACK will be given.

In high school, I hated biology. And not even because of the complexity of the subject, but because of the teacher, which often happens at school. When preparing for the tests, I didn't do anything like revising or learning by heart. I wrote little cheat sheets and hid them in a pencil case on the test. However, one time the teacher saw how I often look into the pencil case. I still remember her loud footsteps in my direction. Then the whole class was looking at me. And I hardly remember what happened. It seems like she just took my pencil away.

People write a lot of essays in various forms throughout their lives. But most of all they write essays during their student life. At universities, students learn to write essays in different forms, for example, ESSAY, PROJECT, ASSIGNMENT, DISSERTATION, THESIS, REVIEW. For preparing an essay it is good to start with a MIND MAP using a DRAFT. In order for the teacher to give FEEDBACK, the student should ACKNOWLEDGE any sources he/she has used. And of course it is highly important to submit it before the DEADLINE. Moreover, in order to avoid PLAGIARISM, the student needs to write by themselves.

I want to write about my dissertation even though I haven’t finished it yet. But I still want to talk about it, firstly, because I’m getting near to finishing it, and secondly, because I’ve never been so excited about writing anything for my studies. I suppose it’s because I’m just very interested in the theme of my dissertation, which is British boarding-school novels, and I’m just happy that I get to read books that I wanted to read anyway. So far, I have read four novels and written half a chapter on each of them. I started each section with a first draft and then proceeded to write up the final version. Right now I’m doing some research for the first chapter that provides a general overview of the British public school and the genre.

Sentences:

Peter is a student and since it’s near the end of term, it’s time for some CRAMMING. Peter isn’t a GENIUS and so he has to DO SOME REVISION. He has to BURY HIMSELF IN BOOKS and to study INTENSIVELY until he KNOWS THE SUBJECTS INSIDE OUT in order to pass his exams. He has to MEMORISE a lot of facts. For some exams he has to REVISE by looking at PAST PAPERS. Peter usually doesn’t use MNEMONICS and prefers ROTE-LEARNING. He also has to write ESSAYS that he has to SUBMIT on time and after that they will be ASSESSED. Peter’s FEEDBACK on his essays is usually great. But he is more worried about his ASSIGNMENT as its DEADLINE is getting nearer. Usually, he starts his writing tasks with a MIND MAP. And he always writes a FIRST DRAFT before WRITING UP the final version. But before writing anything he has to DO RESEARCH. He has to read some ACADEMIC JOURNALS which he hopes to ACCESS ONLINE. Exams are difficult but he hasn’t DROPPED OUT YET and there’s a good chance that he will survive till FINALS and become a WELL-QUALIFIED specialist.

I want to remember my school time. I was preparing for my literature state exam very hard, I tried to CRAM information, LEARN hundreds of poems BY HEART, MEMORIZE theory. For poems and some terms I used ROTE-LEARNING. And also I wrote down all the poems I needed on some sheets of paper and made a small book carrying it all the time with me, so as to REVISE everything. So I tried to use the MNEMONICS. I had to BURY MYSELF IN BOOKS, study INTENSIVELY and I wanted to KNOW THE SUBJECT INSIDE OUT to pass my exam good. I wrote many COMPOSITIONS every week and then in my lessons with a tutor I got kind of  FEEDBACK every time. During my preparation I DID some RESEARCH and read ACADEMIC JOURNALS. Before my FINAL I looked at PAST PAPERS. During the exam I had to do a test and write four small compositions and a huge one. I didn't have time so for small compositions I just used MIND MAPS and as for big one I wrote a FIRST DRAFT before WRITING UP the final version. As a result I made only one mistake in the test and wrote all the compositions excellent and was super happy.

Did you ever cheat at your tests or exams at school? Did it work?

I think that every person has cheated on exams at least once in their life. And I don't see anything wrong with that, to be honest. At school, we had teachers who allowed us to make cheat sheets on their subjects in order to revise  the material once again. At university, I write off much less often than at school, because I understand that most of the knowledge will be useful to me in the future and there is no point in cheating. I wasn't caught cheating, but over time I realized that it's always very noticeable when a person cheats. And teachers, even if they saw this, just didn't say anything.

During our study we do a lot of ACADEMIC WRITING. And while writing COMPOSITIONS or ESSAYS does not require a lot of preparation and thorough study of the subject, then writing a DISSERTATION or working on PROJECTS will not work that way. For this type of work, people usually BURY THEMSELVES IN THE BOOKS and try to KNOW THE SUBJECT INSIDE OUT. FEEDBACK from your SUPERVISOR is required while working on a DISSERTATION. Also, most types of written work have a DEADLINE, and students often miss it.

To be honest, I cheated at several tests and even exams at school. But I'm really bad in at it, so usually I don't even try to cheat. In my opinion, it's much easier to cram or to use rote learning than to cheat during an exam. In university I figured out a new way of preparing. I started to use mnemonics. When it was necessary to memorize something I created imaginary bonds between the material I needed to learn off by heart and some things in the classroom. Thus I had all the material I needed before my eyes.

Alice is really afraid of being expelled.
She needs to carry out a linguistic research but all of the libraries are closed because of covid. I gave her an advice to access it online and use some open educational resources inthe internet.

When I was at school I was not interested in getting education. It was boring for me and I didn't like almost of all the classes we had. However, I always had "5" and "4" marks. Sometimes my good memory helped and sometimes I cheated at my school tests. I used to take a phone or small papers with written notes on them. Usually it worked. I was not the only one who did that. Sometimes we even had fights for the last desks because it was easier to cheat if there's someone's back in front of you. When the state exams began, I decided that I would not cheat. It was too dangerous. I passed all the state exams without cheating and with pretty high results.
